Nail Polish Bottles Okay on Airline Flights?

I read on one of the threads that someone had a bottle of nail polish break while on an airline flight, apparently due to the air pressure change. Anyone else had this problem before? I was going to bring some polish to WDW next month, but am now re-thinking it.

I have never had this happen. I doubt the air pressure would do it, my bet would be on it banging against something.

I have had FAs tell passengers they can't polish their nails on the plane!

If it's full, it could leak. Pressure changes = expansion of liquids and gases. That means anything full can leak- lotions, nail polish, aromatherapy oils, etc.
If you really want to pack it, don't bring a brand new bottle unless you want to pour out a little first, and put it in a ziploc bag *just in case*. If you're worried about glass breaking, the easiest thing to do is to pack it in a ziploc bag full of cotton balls. They act as cushioning and you'll most likely be packing them anyway.

Thanks for the info! How funny that people would actually polish their nails during a flight! I had just planned on bringing it with me in case I need to touch-up my toenails while on vacation. Can't imagine subjecting everyone to the smell of nail polish in-flight.

Good suggestion about pouring some out. I think that in the original post that I saw, the polish bottle had never been opened. That's probably what happened - it expanded and broke the bottle because it was full. Apparently the smell of the polish traveled throughout the plane and was very overwhelming; it also got all over the things in her bag. Yikes! Thanks for the info.

I take nail polish with me all the time. I put it in a ziploc bag and make sure it is padded in the suitcase. Never had any problems.

The only time I've ever had a problem was when I foolishly left a bottle in teh front pocket of my bag and it broke. What a mess! Luckily it stayed within the confines of my bag.

I too have had FA's tell people that it's a hazard. But frankly, I also think that it's pretty presumptuous to do your nails in public, since the smell is so strong. (I believe that the remover may be a hazard if used in flight as it's flammable)

I also recommend the nail polish remover cloths when travelling.

Thanks for all the input. Don't worry - I had not planned to do my nails while actually on the plane! Just wanted to bring some polish for touch-ups while at WDW. Good suggestion regarding polish remover pads, solves the flammable liquid problem.

Nail polish and nail polish remover are some of the common household materials that require "adequate ventilation" when used.

I always pack any item that could leak or spill out into the Ziploc bags. Good idea to pad the bag with breakable glass items like the polish. I will have to remember that tip.

On my last flight to the US, I was painting my Daughters nails and was told not to.
Apparently nail polish is not allowed in the cabin.

I just bought some remover cloths and am thrilled with them. They are all packed.

I put things likely to break in my carry on luggage and in plastic bags since the great leaking full size bottle of shampoo incident in 2002.
