Middle and High School Girls wearing shorts to school. What is too short?

Now that the warmer weather is starting, I have noticed that many of my students are wearing shorts that are (in my opinion) WAY too short.

Seriously, why do parents let their daughters leave the house with their butts hanging out? And don't get me started on the cleavage.

How is it handled in your school? There is a teacher at my school catching a lot of grief from the parents for calling out a 7th grader (repeat offender) on the fact that her butt cheeks were hanging out.

Our dress code says no short shorts and my dd and her friend said that they can't be more than 5 inches above the knee.
If the kids break dress code the parents are called to bring in a change of clothes.

Well, if I were to channel my middle and high school male self I would say there is no too short. :goodvibes

Our school has the fingertip test. The shorts have to be at least the length of your longest fingertip at your side.

If I had my butt cheeks hanging out while wearing shorts, I'd be mortified!! I hardly ever wear shorts anymore...I prefer skirts.

When I was in school, the rule was that your shorts couldn't be any shorter than your fingertips when your hands were down at your sides. It was never enforced. Luckily when I was in high school, our school was so cold you couldn't wear shorts without running the risk of freezing to death!! :rotfl:

That's such a sore subject with me right now! The student handbook for both the middle school and high school are pretty clear on the subject of shorts and skirts -- they must be fingertip length or longer. I've had to take clothes to my daughter three times because of the "inappropriate" length of her skirts. We bought them following the school handbook, and they were both about a half an inch longer than fingertip length, PLUS she wore leggings with them. Girls are getting in trouble left and right for the length of skirts and shorts. I wouldn't have a problem with it if they'd just follow the stupid handbook that THEY wrote up. It's not right to change the rules willy nilly in the middle of a year after parents have already bought clothes.

But yeah, butt cheeks hanging out? Way inappropriate. I thought the fingertip rule was reasonable myself.

No way my middle schooler would go to school in those "glorified underpants" some call shorts!! Her Vice Prncipal instituted a rule ( and when he talks, most obey! Love that guy!!!!). The rule is when you stand up with your arms down at your side, the shorts must be as long as where your fingertips are. Some get away with shorter shorts but there is no butt cheek!

My DD 16 attends Public HS. There rule is: that if you put your hand down, the shorts have to be below your knuckles. If that make any sense. If not you have to change into your pe shorts. Tops have to have 2" straps.

My rules...if mom don't like it you will have to change!

We had this too. For me though, I have a torso on the longer side and arms on the shorter side so I could have worn boyshorts by that rule. I never did though :).

Sorry, just thought I'd post a pic -- this is one of the skirts DD got in trouble for. Can you believe it?? (she was dressed up for 80s day, hence the belt and jacket)

That is stupid. There is nothing wrong with that outfit. In fact, if she wore those high top Converse that day (which I'm assuming she did, its a cute combo), she was showing LESS than one inch of skin.

Another gripe I had was a rule in the dress code that was instituted in the BEGINNING of the school year. You know how shredded jeans are in style? They are much more tame than the torn jeans I wore in high school. My DD15s pants are shredded but have material underneath. NO skin showing. The school decided to ban these jeans. I had no idea until Hannah came home with duct tape all over the shreds. When I tore the duct tape off, it shredded the shreds even more! I bought these jeans (over $40) during the summer. And now she can't wear them to school. Same with my other DD.
These are similar to the jeans she has:

In MS and HS we weren't allowed to wear shorts except in June. And we didn't have air conditioning. It was a public school. Girls skirts could only be 3 inches above the knee. Gosh I hope my kids end up at a school with uniforms. I get scared reading all the posts about dress codes and kids being competitive with clothing at early ages.

Fingertip length, but good luck finding them. I went to Kohls to get some shorts for sd for Easter.... could only find one pair that met the qualifications.

Our school went to the "To the knee" rule. So it's bermuda's all around. That's middle school.

We have the fingertip rule but it's not always enforced. Alot of the dress code is not enforced. :scared1:

I wish ALL schools required uniforms. It would be cheaper on all parents, and maybe tone down the competition to have the latest $150 pair of jeans.

We always had the fingertip rule. Shorts could only be worn from Memorial Day to the end of the school year, when I was a junior or senior they also began to allow shorts in the month of September. Tank tops, halter tops, sleeveless and strapless tops were not allowed but we often got away with sleeveless tops if they at least covered the top of the shoulder

That's us. You have to be covered from your waist to your knee. It's saved us a lot of grief. If you go by the fingertip rule, there were still some girls who could wear really short shorts and call it 'by the rules.'

The principal in our middle school has a great line...

"if you look in the mirror and find yourself asking, 'is this appropriate for school'?...the answer most often is..

...it's not".
