Marathon Weekend 2025

I think that's a first here... would imagine the same deal if someone had to pull out due to injury: they won't do refunds but good chance they offer a gift card.
That is the likely outcome. Let them know that they can release that number back into the pool, that she absolutely won’t be running.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I am finally on the recovering end of a bad cold that made me either reduce my distance/intensity or skip my run altogether since last Saturday. I still have a bit of chest congestion but was able to do an easy 60 min run this morning and felt pretty good. I know that taking 7-10 days away from my normal training shouldn't impact my fitness too much, but I'm still a bit nervous about it. Hard to know how soon I should jump back in versus taking more rest days... Figured I would share in case anyone has had a similar experience or is in the same boat right now.

I'm in the same boat. I caught a bad cold from my child. We didn't celebrate Thanksgiving b/c of it. I haven't skipped any workouts yet, but I'm doing all my "easy runs" from week 10 & 11 of training and saving the speed workouts and long runs for when I get better. Never a good time to get sick, but weeks 11 & 12 of my training plan are the peak weeks of training. EEEK!!!
I don't normally use RWR, but I've been doing all my easy runs while sick as 90/30. The overall pace is slower, but so is my heartrate, and my cadence is great during the Run intervals. I've really tried to improve my cadence during this training block and I'm happy with my progress.

Also in the same boat. Recovering from pneumonia. Haven't run since November 17. Going to wait until Tuesday and start with a walk.

Glad others are in the same boat (I'm not glad you're all struggling with colds/pneumonia.... but, you know).

My body is still recovering from the Amsterdam Marathon at the end of October and its really tough to get it going. I'm way behind where I wanted to be mileage wise. Physio says not to worry though, fitness doesnt disappear that quick. Get the muscles right and the rest will look after itself!

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). This week was Thanksgiving in the US, so let's make that the theme for this week's question. What are you thankful for when it comes to running (or RunDisney, if you want to get more specific)?

SAFD: I'm thankful to be able to run at this point in my life with my weight and injury history. It provides me with so many physical and mental health benefits and allows me to enjoy food without returning to my previous weight. I'm thankful to RunDisney for providing the initial impetus to discover that running was, in fact, enjoyable and not the boring slog I I always thought it to be since it didn't involve chasing a ball or frisbee. Finally, I'm very thankful for it introducing me to this community, where I can talk about running without the rolling of eyes that comes with talking to family and non-running friends about it.

SAFD:

I'm thankful that my body hasn't crapped out on me. My parents talk about how we're all doomed (in my family) with bad knees and bad backs, and bad hips, and blah blah blah. I like to chalk it up to the fact that I've remained active and prioritized things like running and sports and (less recently) lifting weights.

I'm thankful that my husband keeps saying YES to rundisney trips, even if he did see how much a Dopey bib was this year and had some sticker shock.

I'm thankful for this disboards group for being the most realistic, encouraging, and enabling group of people! This really is the best group, and probably one of the main reasons I wasn't actually 1-and-done with MW, with marathons, and running in general.

SAFD: I'm thankful that I can run and get that time to myself. I didn't really start running until grad school and it has been a true evolution to see myself as a runner. It was a long road to get our daughter and throughout that process there were times I couldn't run at all. I really missed it for the physical and mental health benefits, so now that I have an energetic, adorable, yet at times frustrating toddler I need my long runs to help keep me sane! Plus it is so nice to have something that is only for me and not work or family related.

SAFD: Truly thankful for each and every run. I don't have to do this - I GET to do this. I've been doing endurance running for over a decade now, and I have been through my fair share of injuries over the years that have only made me appreciate the ability to run even more! I really try to not grumble about running in bad weather, or getting up early to fit in a run, or working through sore muscles because I do feel very fortunate that I have the ability to run, and the resources to be able to afford trips to run marathons in fun places!

SAFD: I am thankful that running showed me that I could do things that I would never have thought I could do. Run more than a mile? Do a race....do a marathon....do the Boston Marathon? I would never have thought I could. And as much as I have (sort of) outgrown Disney, I will always be grateful that it provided me with the incentive that I needed at the time to start down that path.

SAFD:
Thankful for the mental outlet running provides, the physical health, the dietary requirements and desires. The mental success and boost from competing and completing a run. It teaches perseverance and dedication.

RunDisney provides our family with a common bond we all love. The resorts, parks, NYE, restaurants, and DS. It gives us a goal and helps drive us in our training runs.

SAFD: Like others, I’m just thankful that I’m able to run at all these days. I took for granted my body’s ability to do pretty much any physical activity I wanted most of my life, and the last couple years of aging have been pretty humbling. I wasn’t mentally prepared for how steep - or painful - the decline would be. My days of Dopeys, marathons, and maybe even half-marathons, are over, but I can still get out and run-walk some miles regularly and have made a huge effort to be at peace with that.

SAFD: Happy Thanksgiving! I am grateful for this community, as others have said. No one in my non-virtual life is interested in running or wants to hear me think about training principles, so it's good to have an outlet 😂 I'm particularly thankful for the training journal crew and especially @DopeyBadger for generously sharing his training knowledge!

SAFD: I’m thankful for running because I love it! Its also my outlet away from the crazy world. I can just put on my music and tune everything out. I’m thankful that my body is still able to run and move. That’s why I started doing RWR. So I can continue to move well into my later years. I’m thankful for this group of people that I can share similar interests with since I’m the only one in my family that enjoys running. I’m thankful that I have a husband that was sweet enough to say yes to me running this crazy event in January and my family joining me for the 5K.

SAFD: the fact that I am running at all. I am still trying to recover from injury but happy I am running 3 days a week. Most recently my lifting session on Friday and running on the TM on Saturday my knee was extremely angry at me. I had to drop a lot of weight on leg extension because the knee hurt a lot. I have not had to do that. I will say we had some low temps for Atlanta so hoping that was the culprit. My walk today was ok, towards the end the knee was acting up. I am literally half the mileage I used to cover and like @PrincessV am pretty sure I will never get back to that kind of mileage. I need to be content with 3 days a week, at least until after TKR, which will not be for a long time (I hope).

SAFD: That I’ve finally found a form of exercise I enjoy, makes me feel fulfilled, and gives me much needed time to myself. I started running a few years after having my son, when I felt self-conscious about my body that no longer looked and felt like it used to, and felt like so much of my identity had shifted to being a mother. Running has made me feel like a better version of myself. I’m especially happy to have found this community, or I don’t know if I would have kept up with it for so long. I’m running my first marathon next month (!!!) about two years after starting to run seriously, and I’m so proud of the progress I’ve made.

Echoing others in that:
1. Glad to have somewhere to share and babble about running and training, as no one at my house does, and few at work do
2. My health and being able to run, even though I can't at the moment. But I can keep in mind that a few months from now I'll be ramping back up and back to putting in miles. The last 4 years of running have done wonders for my health, both physical and mental.

As for those who are about to do their first Disney running event, especially the half or the full, you won't be able to look at the place the same again. Besides going backstage in places, you'll start looking at even the on-ramps overpasses differently in that you'll be thinking, "I ran there" or that is where you got a photo op with a particular character. As for backstage, you'll start noticing the places to go backstage that you never noticed before.
It makes it more fun when you visit again, but potentially more annoying for family members....

Running the highways at Disney taught me to appreciate how easy it is to go up or down cloverleafs in cars 😆😆

SAFD: I'm thankful that running, and endurance sports more broadly, has allowed me to make friends all over the world, travel to races all over the world, and keep me healthy and relatively injury free as I get older. I'm looking forward to seeing this subset of those friends in a month or so at Marathon Weekend. I'm buying my plane tickets this week. :)
