Marathon Weekend 2025

Aaaaand.... I'm out for MW 2025.
Just saw my MRI this morning. My hamstring is ruptured and I'll need surgery, so no running for quite some time, much less any long races.
I'll be cancelling my resort reservation and staying home. I guess the races are a write-off.
Just dang. I'm totally bummed.
That's terrible news! So very sorry. Dealing with a pesky meniscus that pales in comparison.

So sorry to hear - hoping surgery and recovery go well and we see you back out on the courses stronger than ever!

That sucks, but at least it is something that can be fixed. Proper care and recovery will be your friend in the long run. Sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and strong recovery.

Quite the blow. Sorry you're having to deal with this. Looking forward to seeing you out there again when you can. Let us know how the surgery goes. Wishing you a fast and full recovery!

Question for those that race during their dopey training block.

I am doing Dopey so I started my official training after completing my 10 miler on Labor Day weekend. I have a 5k I’m planning to race and hopefully win 1st female on 10/12. It’s a Saturday which is my normal long run day. So I’m curious about how I should approach this. Do I race the 5k and then do the rest of my miles afterwards or do I switch and do my long run Friday and then my 5k race Saturday.

I’ve also got a 5 miler in Mid December but I’m not planning to race that. I’ll be running with a friend dressed as Santa. It’s an evening run at the beach through the Christmas lights. If I have a 15 mile long run, would I still do 10 in the am and then do the 5 at night. Or will that hinder my long run benefits?

I’m still learning about racing and training and I don’t have any running friends so I appreciate your feedback.

While I haven't done the Dopey, my experience with fitting in races with training runs as been to include the race distance into the long run distance, but do the race first. For example, for the 5K:
1) Race the 5K that morning
2) Rest, recover, refuel
3) Run the rest of the long run distance at an easy pace later that day or Sunday.

For the December race, you could:
A. Do your 15-mile long run in the morning, then treat the 5-miler as a fun, easy recovery run in the evening.
B. Split the long run, doing 10 in the AM and 5 in the PM as you said.
Either would work, but if you wanted to have the benefits (physical, mental) of doing 15 miles at one time, then doing A may be better. That said, I totally recognize 20 miles is a lot in one day :)

Hope this helps!

I'm going to use the guidelines that Jeff Galloway gives:

- Try to put as much distance as possible between your long run and your speed work (or in this case, race). So definitely don't do your long run on Friday and try to race on Saturday. That's asking for injury to go full out on tired legs. Either do you race on Saturday and long run on Sunday or move your long run earlier in the week or do your 5K in the morning and then add the additional miles afterward.

Which leads me to the second scenario

- The rule of thumb is that, for a run to count as "one run," the break needs to be shorter than 2 hours. If it is more than 2 hours, you're getting in a different type of benefit (i.e. this is type of training that people doing ultras do).

Other running coaches may have other guidelines.

How long is the long run? If you extend your WU and CD a bit, could you get somewhere near the mileage you had planned? You could certainly do like a very easy 3 mile WU/4 mile CD and end up with 10 miles total. I agree with @sandam1 that doing your long run the day before your race would hinder your performance.

Could you move days around? Like swap your long run day and a normal easy run day?

But all that aside, you're talking about two runs out of four months of training. Don't overthink it 🤪

Thanks! I appreciate y’all’s input.

My gut was to do race and then finish the miles later. Although I’ll check out my weeks and see if I can swap out one of my other runs.

Don’t overthink it and don’t worry about hitting some magical number. I’ve done 5 Dopeys, and the long run (especially towards the end) can be difficult to fit in your schedule. I usually do my long runs on Saturdays, but sometimes I will have flexibility in my work calendar where I will do the long run during the week day if I have a busy weekend. One training block I had my 20 mile run on a Saturday where I had to be at work at 8. I got up at 5, ran 15 miles, went to work, came home and ran 5 more miles in the evening. I never ran 20 continuous miles that training block, but I was still able to run all four races and finish with a marathon time in the 3:20s.

I’m wishing you a successful surgery and strong recovery. Be careful to not rush the recovery. I tried to do that previously, and it really set me back. It’s hard to be patient, but well worth it.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). As we get close to fall and the start of a new race season, let's talk race distances. What are your favorite and least favorite race distances and why?

SAFD: My favorite race distance is the marathon. Whether racing for time or for completion, it's never easy and I always feel like I've accomplished something special at the end. My least favorite race distance is, by far, the 5k. It always feels like if I want to really race a 5k, I'm going to be on the edge of being sick at the end. I'd much rather put forth the more moderate, consistent effort of a longer distance.
