Marathon Weekend 2025

On the note of not feeling into the run until you're a few miles in, there are a few things that can sometimes help with that! The first mile is a liar, no getting around it, but you can definitely do things to warm up that will get it going a little faster, and help prevent injury too!

All about those dynamic stretches. Things like forward/back and side-to-side leg swings, calf raises, high knees, butt kicks. I have a whole pre-run routine I go through whether it's a race or a training run. Static stretching isn't ideal before a run, but those dynamic movements help a ton.

I'm in full planning mode today, and figured maybe others are getting there too since we are just over 10 weeks out from everything. If anyone is interested in sharing MM/Photopass for the races, I've done this the last 2 years and it's worked out pretty well. I'm also happy to add you to my MDE Friends/Family and grab all of your in-park and ride pics for you as well. $10/race is the most even way I've found to split it, and I have space for
--3 5ks
--3 10ks
--3 HMs
--4 Ms
Just send me a message if you're interested. :)

ALSO. Where is a good spot to go do a pic setup with medals in Epcot? We are only doing 2 park days this year, and planning on Epcot for both, plus the AH in MK, and I don't want to "waste" AH time setting up pics when we are going to be IN epcot with plenty of time to do pics. Something with a railing with SE in the background?
These are my favorite setups in MK and I’d love to have something similar in Epcot:

I've done the railing picture off to the side of the Torri gate and I was happy with the results.

Also, I've done a few with a couple different photopass photographers in front of SE. One being the standard picture, another was the zoom-in-out video which was fun.

No experience with Disney, but it would depend on the race distance, your pace and your experience at that distance.

Personally, if I needed to, I'd be comfortable with flying out the evening after completing a Disney 5k, 10k or half because I'd have enough time to get back to the room, shower and pack. I would not attempt it with the Disney marathon because of the time on course and the road closures. YMMV.

Yeah sorry forgot to add I'm signed up for the half so plan to be done before check out to shower. I'd like to also hit a park for a little while but not sure if that's feasible or not.

Hey all sorry to de-rail the thread flow but does anyone have experience flying home the same day (evening flight)? Trying to decide whether it's reasonable or not from anyone's past experience.

I agree with Novatrix, this is going to depend on a few things....like if it's your first half, what time your flight takes off, and what your expectations are for the day. If you look at the timeline, let's just pick out 9am as when you would leave the reunion area (that's plenty of time to do the race, sit and relax for a few min, get pics with the backdrops, and get back to a bus or rental car unless you think you'll be at the very back of the pack.) If you're a faster runner, this timeline could easily be moved up an hour, depending on how many pics you decide to stop for. I always allow for more time than I would probably need, because sometimes traffic is crazy, you feel crummy post-race, so these numbers are just examples. Let's just work off 9am as "exiting Epcot"

9am-leave Epcot
915-930- back at room to shower, change, pack, eat, any other tasks you might need to get done
1030? (this would depend on your personal habits) go to a park...which park? How far are you from it? As an example, Saratoga to AKL or MK takes 20ish minutes (plus a possible wait for a bus?)
1045-enter a park
3 hours before your flight, exit the park.

MCO can be crazy for security (my experience is that it's worse in the morning and better in the afternoon, but there are never any guarantees) so it's good to give yourself 2 hours there unless you have pre-check. GETTING to MCO can also be crazy because of I-4. So allow 45min to an hour to get there? Depending on your flight time, you might only get a couple of hours in a park and if you don't have an AP, would it be "worth it" to you?

This. I know OP said the HM, but my first race weekend DH had to be out of our room before I was done with the marathon, and we had packed specifically so I could clean up in the showers at the pool bathroom. I was saved by our next room being ready several hours earlier than expected. I would definitely not fly the same day as the marathon unless absolutely necessary.

Doable---but choose your park wisely. I did MK once after the half and it was hell on earth to get there with the road closures--we missed our first FP of the day. Epcot would also be if you need to take a bus to get there.

Hey all sorry to de-rail the thread flow but does anyone have experience flying home the same day (evening flight)? Trying to decide whether it's reasonable or not from anyone's past experience.

I did this after my first Springtime Surprise weekend and, to be honest, it was kind of miserable. I was able to get a shower and about a 20 minute nap post-race, but other than that, I was moving for almost 22 hours by the time I got to bed. Also, my legs were very, very unhappy about being pretzeled into an airplane seat for 2.5 hours.

Is it possible? Yeah. Is it something that I want to do again? I'll probably avoid it if possible.

I fly home from most marathons day-of, and it hasn't been a problem. Two caveats: my flights have never been more than 3 hours, and I've never flown home on a day I ran a marathon all-out. It's not the most enjoyable thing in the world, but I put on compression socks and was fine.
Edited because I read the rest of the thread, and see it's the half: You shouldn't have a problem, as far as discomfort on the flight. It's fine. Waiting in line for security won't be a treat but you'll be fine.

True story I flew home after my first half, Princess 2012. I did so much sitting between being in the car to get out of the parking lot, sitting at the ESPN Club for lunch, sitting a cab over to GF for afternoon tea with family and friends, sitting in a cab to MCO, sitting at MCO, sitting on the plane. I was up for 23 hours by the time I got home and I went straight to bed. OMG, it took me a week to fully recover since I hadn't done anything after the race.

Last Spring Time Surprise, I walked into Epcot after the 10k (the finish line is right in that parking lot) and took a bus to CBR then Skyliner to HS after the 10M. Monorail to MK is another possibility. So hitting the parks is totally feasible (maybe you want to plan on how you will wash-up in a bathroom).

As for flying home the day of, we had requested a late check-out (12PM) through chat in the app and it was granted. After touring HS, we went back to the resort, finished the packing, left the bags with Bell services and enjoyed the pool and food services until we were ready to leave for the airport at 3PM. You could also leave your luggage at Bell Services before running the half, removing the obligation to return for the checkout.

Thank you all for the replies! I've changed my dates to fly home the next day just out of simple precaution. I appreciate you all

EDIT: I plan to just bring a carry-on so traveling light as possible but either way, a good nights rest the evening after the race and early flight the next day sounds much more enticing.

Good choice.

You didn't mention how experienced you are with the half marathon distance, but if there was any uncertainty (and it isn't going to be an issue with budget/vacation time) it's always much nicer traveling home the next day. This way you can celebrate properly with all the other runners in the park!

Edited to say, depending on if you're staying on Disney property and where, watch out for road closures the next morning impacting your journey to the airport.

SAFD: I am doing all three races for W&D this weekend. I find that I NEED these race weekends to keep me motivated for training for Dopey. If I just had Dopey in January and only training runs by myself before then, I'd probably quit. I get to see my friends from my running group who travel in from all over the country for the races. They've become like my family, so I am really stoked to fly out tomorrow and get to run the races as training runs and see my friends. It provides the little jolt of energy I need to get through the next couple of months of the hardest training.

SAFD: I only do one rundisney event per school year... teacher life.. only have so many days I can take off and this dopey week is really pushing my limit... so no wine and dine... next year I plan on trying it out though.
DW is in same boat, had to ask permission at beginning of year.

Since this week SAFD is about W&D, I see they announced the registration and weekend dates for next year. I was hoping to do it but my wife's birthday falls during the weekend since it is early in October next year. We will have to see. Worst case I end up doing MW again.

Confirming 5K and 10K are sliders, HM and M characters on springs. Goofy is fixed and Dopey rotates open.
And I have officially gone from FOMO to KIMO (Knowing I'm Missing Out)....

You guys are now officially tasked with having a bunch o' fun for me this January.
Or, this being All Hallows Eve, I'll figure out how to curse you. Maybe destine you to repeated trips through it's a small world....
