Marathon Weekend 2023

Good Morning runDisney All Stars!

For our first SAFD in 2022 I am going to use a question that was suggested by @Novatrix.

What races are you planning to run this year?

I am running the Spring Surprise Challenge in March/April. Then hoping to get in a few longer races in late spring and summer to prep for the Run Woodstock 50 Miler in September. If I get selected I am hoping to run as part of the Celiac Disease Foundation Team in the New York Marathon. Last year I was an alternate, so hoping it works out this year. (Both my daughters have Celiac) If not, then a local marathon for the fall, maybe Detroit or Grand Rapids. And then, fingers crossed I get a 2023 Dopey registration! Have a good Sunday everybody!

I was trying to figure this out this past weekend.

March - Undecided if I am going to run the half marathon during The Woodlands Marathon (TX). May depend on my son's baseball schedule.

April - Blue Bell Fun Run 10k

October - 10 for Texas

November - Trying to see if I can sneak in a quick trip to WDW for the Wine & Dine. May come down to if we can get some cheap flights and a cheap room for the weekend.

But that is pretty much all I have on the list. There will probably be others that pop up. My company likes to sponsor a lot of charity runs in the area, so we always get the invites to run as it gets closer to the date.

SAFD:

Between pandemic cancellations and an injury, I've got four deferrals.

Feb: Groundhog Half
Mar: Winter Trail Fest 5 Miler
April: Hurt the Dirt Trail 1/4 marathon
May: River Bank Run 25K
Sept: Bridge Run 10 Miler
Oct: Chicago Marathon

I might add a 15K in March, a half in August, and a Turkey Trot in November

SAFD: The only races I’m planning to run this year are the Cap10K in April and a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I may add a travel race in the fall, since Texas is still too hot for me in September/October. I’m yet another person hoping that proof of time standards relax to include most runners on these boards because it’s hugely motivating to train for.

Thanks for taking on SAFD!

I have no races currently scheduled.... but probably going to run 8 Grand Prix races to earn a prize from my club - all in the New England area. Toying with the idea of the Martha's Vineyard Marathon in May...

good to see some peeps heading to Austin for the Cap10K in April!

Right now, COVID protocols (stage 5 yay) still have the races on here in Austin, just no finish line festivals/minimal spectators

This Sunday: 3M Half Marathon (all downhill, yay! This is my PR attempt for the year)
Feb 20: Austin Full Marathon (first attempt, did the half the past 2 years)
March: currently open
April: Cap 10K

focusing on having funds available to get into Dopey 23 when registration opens, and possibly for club runDisney if it opens first and I feel like I need it to guarantee I can get my Dopey and still get my wife and son in for the 5K. I think it's gonna be nuts with the anniversaries this time

That one is on my list, I wanted to do it last year but of course we know how that went. This May is the Steel Rail Marathon so it’s penciled in for 2023.
I did the half in 2018 and really liked the course. Weather was crappy though. I think it’s relatively flat and a net downhill.

Ooh. April Fools Half in NJ sounds much more fun than Queens. How do you like the race?
Also (pie in the sky) dreaming of all 50 states! (only 6 down so far though so unlikely to realize)

I like the race, as it's relatively local to me and a flat course partially on the boardwalk (which for me always makes my legs feel more springy). There's parking at the casino right at the start/finish, and considering how the weather tends to be cold/drizzly at that time of year it's great that you can wait inside the casino until the gun goes off for the start of the race. You get tickets for a post race beer/party at the Landshark bar after the race.

I wouldn't say it's a fun race entertainment wise, per se (especially compared to big races like Disney or Broad Street), although the first year I did the race weekend was quite memorable. They used to have an 11k on Saturday (not a typo), and that was my first race of any distance ever. I remember being close to the finish line, and utterly amazed that a drug dealer was doing a deal right in the middle of the course. 15 feet away from a police officer. Who wasn't reacting at all. I've never seen anything like it again in the 3 years I've done the race since, but maybe the drug dealers adhere to the Old Testament rules since the half occurs on Sunday.

November: Space Coast Half (maybe)

Highly recommend the race weekend, and the South Half course in particular if you decide to sign up! Much more spectator support than the North Half, flatter and the houses are more interesting.

As a newbie to RunDisney though, I have a few logistical questions:
1) On Expo Day I've noticed that some people wait in very lengthy lines. I had assumed I'd do the expo day as a park day as well but this seems like it may be impractical since some of the best park hours would be spent out of the park in a long line. I'd really like to at least pick up some basic merch (maybe a spirit jersey and a mickey 48.6 magnet for the car). Thoughts?
I always hit the expo later in the day, after lunch - around 2-3pm: no lines. But also maybe missing out on hot merch. This year and previous years, I was still able to get a 48.6 magnet (and any other distance magnets if I wanted them), and a mug, which was all I wanted.

2) I am going to try to stay at the Dolphin or Swan - is it practical to just walk over to the races that start at Epcot (usually I think one of them does?) so I can get a little more sleep on that day?
Someone probably already explained this, but in case they didn't: nope - you can't walk through EP to get to the race start, which is in the EP parking lot, while EP is closed.

SAFD: I'm taking the rest of 2022 off from high mileage - I need time in my life for other things. And I really do not enjoy racing for time, so my only "race" plans involve not racing at rD events, lol! TOT 10-Miler, probably W&D Half and maybe 10K. Nothing else until the 10K and half next Marathon Weekend.

This year I have princess weekend (all 3 races) booked.
I'm also doing the DC Rock and Roll half in March, the 10K for Spring Surprise weekend, the Baltimore 10 miler in June, the Baltimore half in Oct.
I'm supposed to go to the Rock and Roll in New Orleans the first weekend of Feb, but I don't want to fly there, and I want to save some money, so skipping it.
I'm going to look into some more shorter local races to keep up my motivation and I really want to do do Dopey in 2023, but it will depend on how I am doing with my running when it opens up.
