I'm certain this has been asked before but I'm new to the board and this is our first cruise!!!! So excited! Anyway, tell me the scoop on whether to check our magnets or carry on? Thanks in advance for the help. Am finding conflicting info on Google. Pins should be carried on?

Unless you're carrying large amounts of neodimium magnets, you're fine placing them in either your carry on or checked bags. I typically split my magnets up between our two suitcases and my carry on. But then I have a lot of magnets. You'd have to have an extremely large amount of refrigerator magnets to not be allowed to bring them onboard the plane, since they are fairly low in magnetic pull.

I think the "pins need to be carried on" thing has to do with not wanting such items to go "missing" if they disappear out of your checked bags, much like jewelry.

For magnets, either is fine. I've carried mine on when I am not checking a bag and I have sent them in my checked luggage when I do have a checked bag. If you have a lot of magnets, they do tend to add up weight-wise so I tend not to have them in my carry on if I'm checking a bag.

Pins should be carried on, especially if you have a lot. Pins can be a rather expensive item and I try to never put anything in my checked luggage that is valuable.

I carry our magnets in day bag- that way they go up once we get into the room. But we don't have too many. Pins are carry-on item. Too valuable and many not able to be replaced if lost.

So no neodineum magnets then? I did read in one post about people's ears falling off. What are the best magnets to use?

You can use the neodymium magnets. Just not large quantities of them. l'm not sure what "large quantities" means, however.

I've never had an issue with the ears falling off my door. Generally, if you use the heavier fridge type magnets (those brown rubber-type ones), and use them on the whole back of the picture, there isn't a problem. The only magnets I've have any trouble with were the smaller ones (like the 2" Mickey heads). I think there's just not enough surface area (magnet to door) to hold them in place. And that was on the Wonder, on only one of our trips.

Hmm. I'm going to have to do a test run. My porthole magnet design is 20" across (with, of course, the hole in the middle) and I don't want to have to cut it up into 5 pieces just to get it on the magnetic paper. I was thinking of using several of those adhesive business card magnets you can get at Staples.

I usually get the big adhesive magnet sheets (12X24") from Michael's. Then just print my pictures on photo paper, cut it out, and place on the magnet sheet to cut out again.

Oh no, I have made magnets for my FE and have probably 150 neodymium magnets, they are super tiny. They are attached to the laminated images and stuck together in my carry on. Do you think this will be a problem?

Oh! I'll have to see if our Michaels has that size. That might be easier. Thanks.

you can use the "upload file" button when you are posting a message. it should be right next to "post reply".

yay it worked! and no that's not a lot of magnets so you will be fine putting them in either check-in or carry-on.

enjoy your cruise! :)
