Extra innings should remain the way it currently is. The runner on second base will drain so much of the drama of the game. 2014 featured a divisional series game between the Giants and Nationals that went something like 18 innings. So much drama and tension in that game would have been lost with the stupid runner on second idea.I haven't seen it in action, but I'm not a fan of the idea. I'm also not a fan of the "speed up the pace of play" stuff ... I like the occasional 4 hour game (or as a Yankees fan ... not so occasional). I haven't really been paying much attention to what Rob Manfred has been proposing, but I'm too stubborn to want the game to change much in general. I'm still not a fan of this 1-game wild card play-in thing.
As far as pace of play goes, a 3 hour game isn't so bad. A 4 hour 9 inning game is a bit excessive. Reducing interruptions such as frequent visits to the mound, the pitch clock which basically means you can't stand around and take 2 minutes before looking at the catcher to get the signals can help the game. But I'm most concerned they'll do something really stupid like destroy the strategy of the game by implementing the DH in the National League too.
That ending last night was a very 2018 Mets way to end it.Sounds busy but fun. And I'm seeing the Giants tonight ... but I'll be rooting for their opponents
Some will argue that I'm biased as a Giants fan, but I think it's the Giants and I give them that edge because they handle the giveaways so much better than the A's. Both teams have fun Star Wars graphics during the at bats, both teams do a nice job of having between innings Star Wars activities and both teams have great Star Wars fireworks shows when they offer them.Nice! Which team does it better?
But giveaways are a different story. The Giants may have 2 giveaways. 1 to the first say 20,000 fans (this has included a Chewbacca Giants bobblehead and a BB-8 Giants stocking hat) and a second item available only to fans who purchase the special event ticket (this has included a Giants themed baseball with Madison Bumgarner as a Jedi Knight fighting Darth Vader, a Wookiee of the Year Chewbacca bobblehead, a BB-8 Giants POP Funko, and a Giants Millennium Falcon t-shirt in the games I've gone to). The Giants have a designated area where the special event items can be picked up and clearly communicate where that area is and when pickup is.
The A's have chaos. One game you had to go through a special gate to get the item. If you didn't go through that gate you did not get the item even if you paid for the special event ticket. Another time their website said that the special event bobblehead would be mailed to you, but they were giving them out at the game at a predesignated area, but only a handful of stadium personnel had any idea what was going on.
Both have nice giveaway items (t-shirts, bobbleheads, etc.) but the Giants have much better organization at giving them out. The Giants always follow the same procedure for every single game no matter what the game. The A's appear to change the procedure and do not clearly communicate how to pick up the item that comes with your ticket.
