Anybody have any version of the song that is kid appropriate?
I want the same melody just a variation of the lyrics that would be appropriate for 8-9 year olds to sing.

Thanks!

p.s.-Please don't flame me about changing the lyrics. I love the song and I love POC but I don't think a group of little kids should be singing about kidnapping, ravaging and plundering.

Well, being a pirate was all about being the "bad guys". I don't know how you could still come across as a pirate if you "clean up" the image.

Check out Veggie Tales they have a cute Pirate song.

We are the pirates we don't do anything
We just stay at home and lie around
And if you ask us to do anything
We'll just tell you, we don't do anything

Well I've never been to Greenland, and I've never been to Denver
And I've never buried treasure in St. Louie or St. Paul
And I've never been to Moscow, and I've never been to Tampa
And I've never been to Boston in the fall

'Cause we are the pirates we don't do anything
We just stay at home and lie around
And if you ask us to do anything
We'll just tell you, we don't do anything

And I've never hoist the mainstay, and I've never swabbed the poop deck
And I've never veered starboard 'cause I've never sailed at all
And I've never walked the gang plank, and I've never owned a parrot
And I've never been to Boston in the fall

'Cause we are the pirates we don't do anything
We just stay at home and lie around
And if you ask us to do anything
We'll just tell you, we don't do anything

Oh, I've never plucked a rooster and I am not too good at ping-pong
And I've never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall
And I've never kissed a chipmunk, and I've never gotten head lice
And I have never been to Boston in the fall

Pirate captains log 2002 who'll be this band Relient K
And why they'll be so full of contradictions

We don't know what he did but we're down with Captain Kidd
We don't wake up before lunch but we all eat Captain Crunch
We don't smoke, we don't chew, we watch Captain Kangaroo

{Ladies and gentlemen let's give them a big hand}

We are the pirates who don't do anything
We just stay at home and lie around
And if you ask us to do anything
We'll just tell you, we don't do anything

We are the pirates who don't do anything
We just stay at home and lie around
And if you ask us to do anything
We'll just tell you, we don't do anything

Just so you know. My kids have been singing the song since they were little tots, to date there hasn't been any ill effects from it :D

It sounds like this is for some kind of show, since the OP mentions a group of little kids. While I agree with you, there are most likely parents out there that would be appalled to hear their little angels singing about such awful things :faint:

Well they ARE pirates. That's what pirates do. They aren't parrot trainers who drink non-alcoholic kool aid.

Make up your own lyrics?

( though changing the lyrics of this particular song would make it a song no longer about Pirates because this song is about what Pirates actually do/did.)

Perhaps it's a "sailors" life for me?

Unfortunately I think if you have concerns about pillaging and plundering then this song is too far gone. The Jonas Brothers did it with 'stand up me hearties yo ho' instead of 'drink up', but I think unless you want to have a go yourself you won't find a version with 100% appropriate lyrics. There's a couple of pirate songs in Peter Pan - 'A Pirate's Life' and 'The Elegant Captain Hook' but you might have some issues with those too.

I'm thinking you may be right. Some schools have a rather err, strict stance on some topics to be discussed in the classroom - or sing in this case.

Sing small world instead.

Don't even know you, but I will be watching you from now on. You might be the meanest person on the DIS!

j/k, my crummy websurfing computer cannot access or display smilies or I would insert the appropriate ones here.

That was wen they promoted themselves as Christian men waiting for marriage to have sex.........That didn't last too long.

I agree. Substitute the song from Peter Pan. The lyrics aren't about the bad things pirates do, but they do mention dying young:

Oh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life,
A-rovin' over the sea,
Give me a career as a buccaneer
It's the life of a pirate for me
Oh, the life of a pirate for me!

Oh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life,
They never bury you're bones,
For when it's all over a jolly sea rover
Drops in on his friend, Davey Jones
Oh, my good friend, Davey Jones!

Or the second verse has an alternate for the parks:

Oh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life,
You'll find adventurous sport,
But love every minute, for all that is in it,
The life of a pirate is short!
