Just got off NCL - thoughts.

We are not seasoned cruisers. We've sailed on the Dream and the Wish, so NCL was just our third cruise overall and our first non-Disney one. I thought I'd share a bit of what we experienced and our thoughts on them, in particular in relation to things on DCL. It's not really an apples to apples comparison because they really are two very different experiences.

Things we liked:

Cruise director and entertainment staff. They were FANTASTIC! We like to attend activities throughout the cruise- trivia, bingo, etc., - so we encountered these folks frequently and really adored all of them. They had great personalities, great energy, and put their all into making activities fun. They did a thing the last night where they acted out movie scenes for the crowd to guess and my lord, I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. Tears were pouring down my face from laughing.

The ship - we were on the Escape - was clean and well tended. The USB port on one side of our bed was broken so we reported it to guest services. It was fixed by the end of that day.

Main theater shows. We saw the Nashville Tenors and The Choir of Man during our cruise and they were excellent.

Specialty restaurants. The package we booked included two specialty restaurant dinners and we loved how many choices there were. We opted for the teppanyaki restaurant, which was great. Chefs were very entertaining and the food was good. We also went to Cagney's Steakhouse where the food was also very good.

Elevators - lots of them, fore and aft. The only time we really struggled to get an elevator was the day we got off. We opted for early walk-off with our own bags, as did a lot of other people. So it took about 10 minutes for us to finally get an elevator empty enough to fit us and our luggage.

Things we didn't like:

Don't judge, but mama needs her Diet Coke and it was a pain in the tush to get it because we had to go to one of the bars for it. Then it's a tiny glass mostly filled with ice. As an adult, not a huge deal to visit the bar for a soda, but we absolutely hated seeing kids have to do this. One afternoon we were on the pool deck and watched a girl - maybe 11 or 12 - waiting at the bar, grown adults sitting all around her drinking and swearing and oblivious to her there, as she tried to get the bartender's attention to get a soda. Norwegian needs to do this differently. Would love to see some freestyle machines or something and cups with the RFID chip like Disney does or scan your key card to activate the machine.

Entertainment variety. While the entertainment crew did an excellent job, the offerings did get kind of repetitive throughout the week. Bingo every day. Deal or No Deal every day. Really only 2 "big" main theater options, so once you'd seen those, you were done there. We also didn't like the timing of some stuff - we would have loved to check out the 80s party or the glow party, but those start at 10:30, which is too late for me. My body wakes me up by 6 a.m. whether I want it to or not - lol - so we missed out on the late night stuff.

The casino location. We visited a few times and it was fun to have that option, but I didn't like where it was located right in the middle of the ship. I get that it's their money maker, but I guess I'm just a PG girl at heart and would have liked it tucked away fore or aft. Not a judgement, just my personal opinion.

No towel animals. And no meeting our stateroom host. I don't know if it's a Disney thing or just the two hosts we had on Disney, but both made it a point to stop by and introduce themselves to us very early in the cruise. On NCL, the only reason we knew our host's name was because it was listed on the TV in the room. We never met him and didn't even know which person it was from the 3 or 4 we'd regularly see in the hallway around our room. Not really a huge thing, but it IS kind of nice to meet the person who is going to be in your room with your stuff every day for a week.

Meals felt very rushed in the main dining rooms. I get that they need to funnel people through, but don't make me feel like you're trying to funnel me through. Given the choice, we prefer Disney's rotational dining with our lovely staff that follows us throughout the cruise. And we also kind of liked being seated with two other couples our last cruise because it made for more lively dinner conversation.

Room service "courtesy" charge. Room service was complimentary - after a $4.95+tax charge. So, not really complimentary. LOL. On Disney, we enjoy some early morning coffee and pastries on the verandah before getting ready and eventually heading to breakfast. At 5 bucks a day before I even tip the server, it wasn't gonna happen on NCL. They did - weirdly since we didn't request it - bring a coffee maker to our room the second morning.

Our day on NCL's Great Stirrup Cay was a short one due to weather moving in. We tendered over (not a fan of the tendering either, takes so much time) around 9:30 and by 11, they had stopped letting people over because the swells were getting so bad. At 11:30, they started asking everyone on the island to head back. We got some chairs, walked the beach, checked out the straw market, and had some (cold) BBQ lunch before heading back. This was the part that made me miss Disney the most because we love Castaway Cay and feel there is a lot more to see/do/explore there.

Final thoughts:
It seems like there are a lot of things we didn't like, but none of them were so major that they ruined the cruise for us or anything dramatic like that. My husband pointed out that it really did align fairly well with what we paid. We pay more for a premium experience on Disney. This 7-night cruise on NCL was about the same price as a 4-night on Disney, so we tried to keep that in mind.

Overall, we had a good time and while not in a rush to do so (We have DCL booked this August and next April), we will probably cruise NCL again at some point.

NCL only has one steward per cabin, and since they switched to only once a day cleaning, they were given more cabins and are more overwhelmed.

I would say my experience with NCL is very similar - except I am jealous you got to see Choir of Men! Covid cancelled it in 2021 (the singers were onboard 😕).

I am the opposite with feeling rushed in the MDR; I have only sailed alone on NCL and didn't need the time for socialization. I did join in the “shared table” experience - offered some meals an option to maximize table use. With friendly cruisers, we spent longer dining than my own family does. And the buffet is open for dinner.

That soda at the bar situation is not ideal. (I did not see any children going for drinks on my four cruises. The demographics on my itineraries could almost have been adults only.) But I also saw no drunken behavior. As for the coke/ ice/ glass scenario, they would fill the insulated tumbler I had with me. Or they could give two glasses. DCL soda stations are definitely a big +

I have been fortunate to find last minute deals in interior cabins, without a solo supplement, making it very affordable.

Both NCL and MSC stewards were more stealthy than Disney. But the NCL crew were all friendly as I passed as they were cleaning rooms.

I have sailed NCL (all post-Covid):
2021
7 nights NCL Encore Alaska from Seattle

2023
9 nights NCL Joy New England and Canada from NY overnight in Quebec
B2B with
7 nights NCL Joy Canada and New England

14 nights NCL Jade Southern Caribbean from Tampa

I would sail with them again. It’s not a Disney cruise, but for port intensive itineraries, it’s a good price for a floating hotel with multiple dining options.

As a fan of the Magic and Wonder, the size and layout of the Jade was delightful.

On the last cruise, I enjoyed seeing lots of people playing cards, dominoes, other games in the buffet area. (Cruise or assisted living?)

The MDR on the Encore and Joy (sister ships) has large windows. It felt more spacious than any Disney MDR.

My 4 NCL cruises came long after I started with Disney (now 21 cruises), total of 34 all lines (Princess, mainly Alaska; MSC, 2; Royal, and Carnival - 1 each).

The MDR has 7 menus. On a 14 night, you saw each one twice. Disney does not repeat menus in long cruises.

I agree crew was friendly - we just had no idea which room steward was ours! lol
We had one bartender who filled our insulated tumblers for us which was nice.
And I laughed at your assisted living comment because I almost resemble that remark! LOL. We aren't to the dominoes era of life yet, but getting closer. ;) We did do a lot of trivia and such because we are competitive and enjoy those. A lot of the board games during the day were at Le Bistro.

What cruise line has two cabin hosts?
Oops I was responding to the statement 2 stateroom hosts, not realizing it was separate cruises. I do believe that on our first cruises there were 2 of them, but that was over 20 years ago.

Thanks for this. I'd say your likes and dislikes pretty much mirror ours with NCL (5 cruises with them) with the exception of the MDR. We've never felt rushed there and actually prefer not having a set time / schedule as you do on DCL. My number one complaint about NCL is the daytime entertainment. It's not our thing, which is why we stick to port intensive itineraries. I think they offer a great value for cruises where the destination is the focus rather than the ship.

One tip on the soda - yes, it's a pain that you have to go to a bar to get it. To get around that you can get cans of soda delivered to your room, though it does cost extra. We feel it's worth it for the convenience, though the last couple of times we've done that it didn't cost us anything. We were in the Haven on the Joy and in a suite on POA and both times our butler just brought them to us and didn't charge us for it. I don't know if that's a new suite perk, or a "butler aiming for a nice tip" thing. If it's the latter, it worked :) !

Recently experienced this on Princess. Did a 14-day cruise and really missed the towel animals (especially since we had just done a DCL cruise a few weeks before! Our stateroom host was not quite as stealthy, though he did not come and introduce himself , which I also missed from how DCL does it. We did encounter him in the hall quite a few times, but he was never super friendly. I know they're very overworked and I wasn't expecting much, but even saying "hello" to him he'd barely look up or say hi back.

I think some cabin stewards are simply more task-minded. I wouldn't take offence to it.

I still have NCL on my list of cruise lines to try. I've seen so many videos from the newer ships - even ThePointsGuy did a video on NCL. It just looks like a good time.

Thanks for the review!

I'm impressed you were able to find some diet coke. :thumbsup2 We have sailed NCL 3 times and I had to bring my own. They only had Pepsi products on the ships we were on.

They made a switch to Coke ship by ship and it was completed at the end of 2022. As I mentioned in another thread we were pleased with NCL and put them as 1 down from DCL.

Thanks for posting. We cruise on the Escape in 2.5 weeks. It's our first NCL too. After 1 Disney and many Carnival and a handful of Royal cruises. Curious to see how it compares.

We were so loyal to Carnival and were getting up there in the loyalty program but then felt they went too far downhill for us anymore. Last couple cruises were more disappointing than good.

So we started doing Royal and thought maybe they'd be our line of choice and....they too began to slip in quality, IMO.

So now we are venturing out. Doing NCL and have Virgin also booked. May try to do a Celebrity or HAL but we aren't quite HAL age yet.

I have to say I already have 2 stikes for NCL though things may be redeemable.

One thing was we had no clue the adults only outdoor area l, Vibe, was a pay you play and sells out online pretty fast. We didn't get it. And our cruise, being in March, is in spring break times so it should be a packed ship.

We heard we can try to rush on the ship and go to some desk or something and try to book it. But we go 11am boarding and heard others got as early as 9:30. So...prob won't get it.

The second thing. We booked an inside on black Friday for a great deal. The balcony was about $1k more, if I remember correctly. So I put in a upgrade bid for a balcony way back when, not long after booking. About a month ago, on a social media group, someone posted they got their balcony up bid for $150pp. We bid $300pp.

Then, about 12 days ago, I got an email saying they declined our bid due to no availability basically. But gave a counter offer of $60pp for an Oceanview. It had and accept offer button and I clicked on it. Then later got an email basically saying we had a new bid and would be dependant upon availability. As of today, we still have an inside cabin. Not sure why they called it a counter offer and had accept offer button. Maybe they just wait to assign us the OV last minute. I am hoping.

Though I do worry about the OV locations so may be a good thing to keep the inside. But a 7 day is a long time to be in an inside with no seeing outside. Especially with a hubby who likes to spend too much time in the cabin watching TV. If we could get Vibe then I could go there when he wants to sit in the room.

We also got 1 free dining plus bought the 2 dining package for 3 soecialty dining nights. Most was already booked in Nov. I could only get 9pm for Cagneys and couldn't get the fish place at all. Did get the French one and the Japanese steakhouse one. Will try to change Cagneys to earlier.

So we shall see. Excited to give it a go. We did manage to snag a resie at Choir of Man. Heard that show is going away end of March, I think. So it's nice to get to see that.

Been on NCL, HAL Disney and Celebrity always had towel animals and always met and saw our Cabin Steward.

LOL on meals. Lot of folks here have complained that Disney is too slow.

But good information because everyone has different priorities.

If you're being serious, DCL does in suites (host and assistant host). Also, I've had 2 in Viking.
I was being serious. I've never had two cabin stewards in a lowly regular stateroom. I've also never cruised a high end cruise line like Viking. Sorry us lower class aren't up to speed on such things.
