It's kind of awful this week.

On a trip with my daughter at Disneyland this week. Trying to make the best of it but we’re two days in to a 5 day pass and I’m not sure if it’s worth finishing out our passes even though I have been DYING to come back since 2018.

Construction at DLH has been intermittently really loud at the pool, and there isn’t much here for food or drink now either. I like not leaving the Disney “bubble” but the lack of amenities for a hotel this expensive has now grown ridiculous. Spent 30 minutes at the entry gate yesterday troubleshooting with employees because the app wouldn’t link my tickets. Trying to pick up the fantasmic lunch I booked was weirdly complex, with nonstop conflicting info given and food that was really gross (I mean, I’d been warned about the box lunch, and really bought it only for the seating but still…ew.) Then today we gave up after 5 long, hot pointless hours in the park because the only attraction that didn’t close or malfunction while we were in line was the Tiki Room.

Paid the $40 for ROTR (on top of the horrible genie+ service), waited all day for it, then the app mysteriously moved our time. A cast member agreed to honor our original time, but the ride then broke down and we had to be escorted off. I’ve been to the park during very busy times before, but never have seen waits or messes like this. The poor employees seem absolutely overwhelmed—maybe park attendance needs to be scaled back a bit until people are trained and rides are fixed or something?

I wish we’d just waited until next year to see if some of the kinks get worked out. I know that there are labor, service and supply chain issues everywhere you go, but when you’re looking at a vacation that meets or exceeds the cost of a trip to Europe, it’s hard to swallow so much “making it work and making the best of it.” It isn’t that we haven’t had any fun—there is always something fun here—but if I’d known it was going to be like this I would have cancelled.

Ugh, that all sounds awful. Disneyland should not make you feel that way. I don't know what has happened in the last 2 weeks, but this is like the 5th report like this I've heard this week. We've been away from the parks since July 3, and we won't be back until July 31, and honestly I'm okay with that given these recent reports.

I have to believe there are some MAJOR staffing issues going on (the new CM attendance policies released today point to there being issues in that area).

The DLH really does need to do something about the food/beverage issue. We had problems in April too. The food at Tangaroa was SO slow to be prepared and then wasn't good, there were massive lines for the bar too, and that's the only feasible food option at the moment. The closure of Steakhouse 55 with nothing to replace it was just bad planning.

Have you spoken to anyone about all the problems you have had? I encourage you to do so. It will make you feel better. They need to hear how all these things impact the guests (in particular the ride breakdowns and app issues).

I hope things turn around for you and you are able to enjoy the rest of your vacation.

I hope the OP and everyone who is having a bad in-park experience is vocalizing this to Disney. They need to hear it.

I'm so sorry this is your experience. Like @DLgal, I've been surprised at the number of trip reports like this as this was not our experience at the beginning of the month. Obviously something had gone wrong in the past couple of weeks.

We ate at Trader Sam's, and I noticed the construction noise when we were there. In fact, I mentioned it to H, noting that I was glad we'd ever up at GCH instead. I'm sorry the construction is affecting your trip.

I also think you should let someone know about these problems. They can't make things better if they aren't aware of how things affect the guests.

GOSH, I am so sorry to hear this and hope things improve and you can make the most of your trip. We are travelling from England next week and it's a really special trip for my parents' 50-year Golden Wedding Anniversary (they are huge Disney fans). I know 90% of our happiness will just be from being there and breathing it all in but the wait times and overcrowding sounds really worrying. Thanks for sharing, we will try to prepare ourselves for the worst and hope for the best.

One question I have, is what's the point of the "reservation" system for park entry when clearly there is no sensible cap on numbers? Most of the coming days are still wide open. If there are CM staffing issues they should really limit the numbers more, but I guess all they care about is $$$$$$$$$ these days. Really sad.

What exactly are these new attendance policies?

I don’t know the details, but it’s something to do with how sick days are counted. And the word on the street is that the news system is not as favorable to longer illnesses.

Obviously something had gone wrong in the past couple of weeks.

Combined with the above policy change, seems like it could be Covid related illnesses which are apparently on the rise in SoCal. The timing of all of it seems to line up.

OP, I am sorry. I understand that feeling of excitement to return to Disneyland only to feel deflated with how things have actually occurred. You can roll with a hiccup or two, but when they seem to be around every corner you start to really get discouraged. It is so frustrating!

Make sure when you talk to them about all the failures, it is without emotion and with point by point logistics -- you get a lot farther that way. (but believe me it is so darned tricky to do that when you have just spent thousands of your hard earned dollars and feel ripped off)

I truly hope things make a turn around for your vacation. When this has happened to us, I typically tell my family we need a reset. It is a new day! We have to go in with a positive attitude and try everything in our power to sustain it. No little gripes, just look for the good.

Keep us posted - I really hope we hear some good news. :flower3:

This is awful and I'm sorry to read the details.

Like DLGal wrote, if you find some downtime you can visit City Hall or a Guest Relations kiosk. Nicely explain what happened and how it all affected your day. They may refund your ROTR purchase and/or sprinkle some pixie dust in addition (Multi-Experience Passes). Given the amount of crowds and issues this week (from other posts), it may be difficult to get in front of Guest Relations without a long wait, which kind of defeats the purpose. The kiosks might be better than City Hall, which deals with all kinds of issues. I know the hotels have the ability to add passes as well, so that might be an option. But I don't know how savvy they would be on the ROTR refund part.

In all these years I was never one to visit guest relations-- Until they started charging for Individual Lightening Lanes on rides that break down.

What a mess, I hope your week turns around today! :thumbsup2

Hmmm. Not fun for y’all and you definitely need to head to Guest Relations. You should be refunded for your LL payment and I’m sure you’ll have a sympathetic ear when you explain the details to GS.

Since re-opening day it has been roller coaster experience at DLR. Highs and lows. I visit on average once a week, most visits are great. But there have been weeks that I’ve scratched my head about what’s going on in the Parks.

Whenever I hit a wall on vacation due to things out of my control. I slow it down. Sleep in, pool day, walk around shops, a fun lunch. Walt’s intention when he opened Disneyland was simple. For people to be happy. I hope the next few days you’re able to find that!

OP here.
After the hotel break yesterday (and an abysmal late lunch at a dirty dtd place we’ve dubbed Tortilla Pukes, because we split nachos there and we both ended up throwing up later last night), we decided to go back for the night hours and tried to psych ourselves up that we’d have a good attitude and fun.

We got on Winnie the Pooh, which broke down at half past a heffalump and we had to be escorted off. If I put my most positive mom spin on it, I guess I could say it is somewhat interesting to see so many rides up close and personal with no lighting and music. And we got to see the Star Wars employee break room, which made my daughter chuckle when I said that’s where Darth Vader heats up his leftovers and watches TikTok on his lunch break. But then she said, “Mom, if they can’t make Winnie the Pooh work, are we actually safe on the guardian ride tomorrow?” This was something I hadn’t even considered but now I’m thinking I want to avoid incredicoaster and such. I did get to redeem an earlier pass for ROTR, though, and it is really an impressive ride. Worth the $20 when it works, for sure.

I will definitely complain re the hotel and the ride breakdowns. Not looking for a freebie, just want it to be better. We just went on a Disney cruise in April and had to spend the night before the trip in Orlando. We stayed at a very affordable universal hotel that I’d thought would be meh (I hate those yellow minion things) but it had wonderful service and yeah, the food was cafeteria-esque, but there were a million choices (wine! Sushi!) and everything was pretty good. The pool area was huge and fun and clean. It’s hard to understand why DLH can’t pull that off even at three times (!) the nightly cost.

Anyway, today is California Adventure day. The last time we were here my daughter was so excited to see that a Jessie carousel was coming soon. Then Covid happened and she’s no longer obsessed with Jessie and Bullseye, but we’re both still excited to see it. Time to pick up my mobile coffee and breakfast order (crossing fingers, they are always out of whatever I order) and hit up DCA. Wish me luck!

I hope today goes better and please come back and update us. We are heading there in a few weeks and it helps to know what to expect!

If it’s any consolation, the Fantasmic show was better than ever and was still truly magical. It would make for a lovely anniversary event. And I have never seen more characters roaming around—we saw Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Belle, Alice, Chewbacca, and Elsa within like a 10-minute time span yesterday.

I truly hope today is better for you and your family! Be sure to come back and update us. We are heading there in a few days for our first ever Disneyland vacation and it’s a great help to know what to expect.

I hope today goes better for you! Our Rope drop day at DCA was really nice and quiet compared to our DL rope drops. It's easy to roll with one or two little problems, but when they start to pile up it's really frustrating. On one of our June days ride after ride was down, and around 12:00 when Indy, too, was down for our LL my 16yo said "I just can't take it anynore," and we went back to the hotel until around 6:00.

Do speak to someone about the issues you've been having.

I would speak to DLH about the hotel problems, too. When we stayed there the construction had a major impact on our stay- construction right outside our window and it was super loud in our room. I spoke to the front desk and they were sympathetic and gave us a partial refund. I also wrote when we got home about various other problems with our suite. Even if there's nothing the CMs can do to help, it can feel good to be heard.

Have a great day and I hope things turn around for you!

I noticed quite a few ride breakdowns also when we were there this month. It seemed to be much more common than when I was there before covid. I don't know if they are short staffed, behind on upkeep, or new safety protocols they have to follow before they're up and running again. We were in line for Mr. Toad when it broke down, the attendant said the same thing had happened a few days prior and they were up and running within 15 minutes. While we waited an engineer came, shut down one of the cars, they cycled the ride through a couple times to clear everything and we were good to go. At another point in our trip we had to be evacuated from Alice. I'm not sure what happened there or how long it was down. Thankfully nothing else really affected us.
