In Star Wars what are the Porgs and what do they do?

I noticed that in the Star Wars movies that they are some creatures named Porgs and I'm curious to know more about them? From what I learned a Porg is a cross between a bird and a penguin with an owl like face and they make sounds like baby owl hatchlings do. Another thing I learned about Porgs is that they are a favorite food of Chewbacca and Han Solo has one as a pet. Also do the Porgs each have names too?

Porgs were introduced in The Last Jedi and are native to Anch-To, the planet Luke had exisled himself to and the home of the original Jedi Temple. Porgs are there because the filming location is home to puffins, small birds that are protected. The film crew couldn't disturb them, so they just let them do whatever and then used CGI to place the porgs over where they were. They do have personalities and may be a bit more intelligent than your average animal. Chewie did cook one, but then he couldn't eat it becasue the Porgs were staring in horror. I think he only did it because they were the only thing available, not because they are his favorite. Some stow away in the Milennium Falcon and do become a sort of pet, but this was after Han was no longer with us.

Chewbacca tried to eat a Porg but could not? I find that hard to believe that Chewie did try to eat a Porg but I guess the Porgs would've felt bad that someone was trying to eat them. I got interested in learning about them after I got an adorable plush Porg yesterday and I fell in love with Porgs because they looked cute

Well, he was roasting a couple and as he was about to eat he noticed some looking onin horror. The movie doesn't show if he ate any others, but he definitely has some second thoughts about it in the moment. It's a little dark really for a Star Wars movie. I don't know if Luke considered them food either, though he is shown catching fish to eat.
