"If I Was Any Better, I'd Be Twins!" - A Diabolical, Divalicious September '24 Solo Trip *UPDATE 02/01*

Let’s LIGHT This (Black Flame) Candle!

Had a very easygoing and unremarkable Saturday before my journey – woke up normal time, did my little morning walk, went to the bank, got my nails done. The family ended up heading out on some errands together in the afternoon, then I had to keep an eye on my company’s social media account for a few hours to interact with people on the heels of an event we were participating in. We got Popeye’s for dinner and I ended up going to sleep around 10 PM, all packed up and ready to embark on my journey in the early hours of the morning.

My alarm woke me up at 3 AM. Despite it being a Disney day, this was a bit of a tough wake up call and I ended up hitting snooze. Blasphemous, I know!

I was able to get dressed & ready quickly and dad woke up around 3:30. I was all ready to go, so I chugged a protein shake then went upstairs to quickly say goodbye to mom, who ended up waking up and deciding to embark on a ride to the airport with us.

4:00 rolled around and we were out the door. With zero traffic on the road, we got to Newark Airport shortly before 4:30! I gave a quick hug and kiss to mom, thanked dad for the ride, and wheeled into the check-in desk for JetBlue. The check-in process and security process at Newark was a breeze this morning. Checking my bag took no more than 10 minutes and security took no more than 10 as well, leaving me with about 45 minutes to explore the new Terminal A at Newark airport.

If you visited Terminal A before it’s multi-billion dollar makeover last year, you know that it was, um... maybe not the best place on earth  The new and improved Terminal A is very impressive and almost makes you forget you’re in Newark, NJ!

There were a lot of places to eat, and I was very pleasantly surprised with how many of them were open at 5 AM. I didn’t get the chance to eat anywhere today, but I did have to run to an odds-and-ends shop to get a bottle of water, some gum for the flight, and some sunscreen for my Epcot morning, since all of mine was packed in my checked bag. I found a tiny face stick and tiny bottle of Sun Bum and they ended up being perfect for my little hip pouch all week long!

The plane boarded at 5:30, and I was in Group A with an exit row seat, so I was part of the first group of passengers to board. Definitely geeked out a little bit when I sat down and saw this!

Now, some of you know this and some of you don’t, but I’ve been on a weight loss journey since March and have lost a considerable amount of weight since then with changes in my lifestyle, diet, and medication. But I am still a bigger girl and I carry a lot of weight in my stomach, so flying is not always the best experience for me. I will always sit in exit row seats, or in select airlines, seats that are marked “wider” or “more leg room”. I will do anything to avoid sitting in general economy seating. I had a terrible experience with United last year flying back from Vegas where a flight changed and they took my exit row seat from me, putting me in a basic economy seat where I candidly just didn’t fit.

JetBlue is the only airline where I’ve never needed a seatbelt extender, even at my highest weight. Plus, “the most leg room in economy” is not a joke – sitting in an exit row really was a pleasant experience. JetBlue is big girl approved and you will not regret spending $80 extra a flight for an exit row seat. In fact, I will probably always fly JetBlue for many reasons, even if I end up losing enough weight where I feel comfortable sitting in regular economy seats – free in-flight wifi, free drinks & snacks (seriously, why is this disappearing from other airlines?), just all-around pleasant flight attendants and I’ve never had an issue with bags, checking in, or flights in general with them.

We were wheels up in Newark at 6:00 sharp!

Remember that HHN screen I just showed you all? Well, my TV ended up not actually working for the entire flight  But it was fine! It was a very easy flight at about 2.5 hours and I listened to music, texted my family, watched a few YouTube videos. Also had these everything bagel pretzels.

We were wheels down in Orlando at 8:35!

After I got off the plane, I made a quick pit stop to put in my contacts, then it was off to grab my suitcase. Nothing was more exciting than seeing these stores in the terminal!

We flew into Terminal C today, so no fauxnorail ride for me. Just went up the escalator, followed the signs to baggage claim, and took a photo with my favorite airport carpet:

After I grabbed my suitcase, I quite literally just took an elevator down to the ground level and the Mears check-in desk was right there. I checked in and had a seat so I could wait for my bus to arrive. I checked in at 9:20 and my bus arrived at 9:40!

I was the only person getting on this bus at Terminal C, but it was quite full from people picked up at Terminal B. Still, I sat back, relaxed, and watched Beauty and the Beast while we drove “home!”

We stopped at All-Star Sports and All-Star Movies first, then Jambo House was the third stop. We got there at 10:35, so all in all, it took just under an hour of travel time once I was on the bus & about 1 hr 15 minutes from the time I arrived at the Mears check-in desk until I was at my resort. This was my first time using Mears since Disney discontinued Magical Express and it was definitely the cheapest way to go, but not necessarily the fastest. It wasn’t an egregious amount of time spent traveling/waiting, just not as quick or direct as a rideshare service would be. Personally, I was happy with Mears. It got the job done for a great price and I’ll probably use it again on future solo trips.

Okay… enough of this travel talk! We’ve arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!!!

Congrats on the weight loss. I need to start back up on my journey. Looking forward to hearing more on your glorious trip.

Following! You've also got me thinking now in what I would put in my own ultimate solo Disney adventure 🤔

Good luck on the weight loss! Didn't know that about Jet Blue, I've never flown with them before. Not to be too nosey, would you mind saying what the cost of the Mears transportation was for you. When I was solo earlier this year, I used Lyft. Just trying to compare pricing.

Can’t wait to hear about your trip and your stay at AKL! We are staying at AKV Jambo in May for the first time so I’m interested to hear about the resort. I’ve been following along from your PTR and family trip report.

Thank you very much!!

I've started and stopped this journey dozens of times in my life, so I know how you feel! Getting back on track after I've fallen off has always been my biggest challenge. I especially struggle in times like this, where I'm just coming home from vacation and trying to jump back into the routine I had before my trip. It's not easy, but I've done it before, so I know I have the tools I need to do it again! And so do you! You've got this!

Smooth travel day - you're off to a great start!

It was so smooth! The weather in NJ was not great the day before and September is always unpredictable in FL, so I was nervous this time, but we made it without incident! :woohoo:

Excellent start!

:welcome: Thank you very much my friend!

Following! You've also got me thinking now in what I would put in my own ultimate solo Disney adventure 🤔

:welcome: Thank you so much for following along! Planning my solo trip was epic and watching it come to life was like a dream come true -- I hope you can experience the same one day!

Thank you very, very much!

And you're not being nosey at all! Considering this is a TR, it was actually very silly and unhelpful of me to not include the price for Mears  It was $17.50 to go from MCO to DAKL and $16.00 to go from DAKL back to MCO, so round trip it was less than $35. From the research I've done, the average rideshare is about $50 1-way from MCO to DAKL, so I saved a lot of money as a solo traveler, but if you're a group of, say, 3-4 people who can fit all of their luggage in an average size car, you might feel like a Lyft or Uber from the airport is the better deal.

:welcome: So great to see you here!!! Thank you so much for checking in! Loved, loved, loved Jambo House-- this may be the recency bias talking, but it's one of my favorites now. I can't wait to tell you all about it!

Following along. Sounds like you had a great trip and I can't wait to hear all about it.

:welcome: So great to see you here my friend!!! I can't wait to tell you everything!

Following along as well. Looking forward to see what you get up to.

:welcome: Thank you so much for joining along!!!

I felt the same about Mears. The price was good for a solo traveler and (since I arrived super late) I felt comfortable and safe taking the bus. Plus- it was VERY obviously an old DCL bus which was fun.
We’ve arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge!!!
Can’t wait to hear all about your time at AKL! I adored my couple of days at Jambo House. I had good intentions of writing up a little TR (and took notes and pics!) but the longer I wait the harder it gets to get started, haha.

So exited to read about all your adventures!!

Wow that is a big difference. I paid about $35 for one way using Lyft. Glad to know and I'll remember that for my next trip.

Late to the party, but joining in! I’ve always lurked and loved your trip reports. I too have a fabulous solo trip (the first in years!) coming up, and can’t wait to see what solo shenanigans you get into!

YES! The first thing I spotted was the DCL logo on the back of the seats

I hear you... I have to jump into my TR as soon as I get home or I forget everything and can't get it started!! DAKL was absolutely stunning, I miss it so much already!

Yes, definitely a big difference in price and I didn't mind waiting around a little bit! Wish it was still free/wish they magically whisked your bag away like they used to, but at least I have an option that's cheap, reliable, and safe.

Checking In & Some F&W Booths
So we pulled up to the Jambo house porte-cochere at 10:35. Our driver helped me retrieve my bags from the cargo hold, and then I quickly pulled my park bag out of my backpack and dropped my duffel, suitcase, and backpack off with bell services, since my room didn't seem like it was ready yet & I was planning on visiting Epcot first.

Jambo!

This was not my first time in DAKL's impressive lobby, but it was my first time staying here, so I paid a visit the check-in desk before heading to Epcot. I completed online check-in like a month before this trip even started, but it's a habit of mine to stop at the check-in desk anyway. #IGetItFromMyMama.

I was waved over by a very lovely woman named Tiana, who complimented my Taylor Swift-themed t-shirt (you'll see it in a moment). We spent a few minutes talking about Taylor Swift, she said she loved "my vibe," I told her all about how I used to be a CM and how much I loved it and how this place is my home, and then I gave her my ID so I could check into my room.

"Okay," she said as she tapped away on her iPad. "So you're room isn't ready yet, but it's..."

Then she paused.

"Mmm, actually," she shook her head, "I don't like your room. I'm changing it for you."

I was very surprised and insisted she didn't need to do that, but she told me she wanted to make sure I had a great trip, so she bumped me from a resort view room to a Savannah room view on the Kudu trails, overlooking Sunset Savannah. It was very exciting and very appreciated, and I thanked her as many times as I possibly could! My new room was ready, but I was still about to head to Epcot for some lunch & fun times, so I thanked her and told her it was so nice talking to her and then headed for the bus stop.

First note on DAKL -- All of the CMs were awesome. Whether you were at the restaurants, the pool bar, talking to Housekeeping, obviously front desk staff made some magic for me this trip, everyone was great. As you'll see in this story, I needed some extra help at Zawadi marketplace a few times to retrieve some jewelry and ship some things back to the resort -- Zawadi CMs were so friendly and always happy to assist. And as you might already know, DAKL is special because it's home to so many animals that are so beloved and looked after by a team of caretakers & experts. I got to say hi to some very friendly animal experts when on the outlook and visiting the Flamingo pond. I also overheard many stories from guests throughout my trip who had the opportunity to talk to different caretakers as they were in the savannah below their room balconies. I was right above a boma (pen, not the Boma restaurant) so it was too far of a spot for these caretakers to spot me or say hi to me when they were feeding the giraffes in the evening, but from my experience with these caretakers during the Starlight Safari tour, I know that they love talking to guests. Long story short, there is no shortage of world-class Disney hospitality at DAKL. It reminds me of how the Poly used to be (no shade, I've never had a bad experience with the Poly staff, that entire hotel just isn't like how it was before COVID).

Second note on DAKL -- The bus service was completely fabulous except for when I traveled back and forth during MNSSHP. This is the biggest thing I see people worrying about when they talk about booking a stay at DAKL! You guys know I'm very spoiled and my family loves our Monorail resorts and our Skyliner resorts. The idea of staying at a resort with only bus service seemed like it would have given me some frustration this week. I mean, who likes waiting for buses at Disney? And then you get on the bus and it's crowded and you have to stand? Well, the bus service throughout my week was fabulous. Any time I traveled to Epcot, DHS, DAK, and even Magic Kingdom for EE/Rope Drop, the bus stations and buses were nearly empty. Never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus, whether I was headed to a park or headed back to the hotel. Never had an issue getting a seat. Everyone also seems worried about how "far" DAKL is from the other parks, when it reality -- it's less than a 20 minute ride to MK, about 10 minutes to Epcot and DHS, and legitimately 3 or 4 minutes to DAK. It is very manageable, especially considering how I nearly always had a seat.

... And if I may say something controversial? I'm at a point in park touring life where I'll take an empty bus over a crowded monorail any day of the week. :duck:

(Although the Skyliner is STILL my favorite way to travel!)

The only time I had issues was around MNSSHP. We will talk about this later, but for now: the bus service at DAKL was fabulous and shouldn't deter you from booking here.

Okay, ENOUGH chit-chat! Let's get down to business!

An Epcot-bound bus pulled right up and 10 minutes later, I was at my most favorite part of my most favorite place on earth.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYPEiZ3x17j3hRoLHwq4c8MSrnHjCyIZu59oV2we_kMG9A

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYN0JrF_RHTI_7akVjHnKaRoV7ntXQOewWgszVPDOQPWWw

Did a quick jaunt through security and the tapstyles and then reached into my bag for that Sun Bum I bought back at EWR... only to realize I left it in the backpack I checked with Bell Services :headache: D'oh! So my first stop was to the stroller & ECV pavilion on the left side of the Park entrance so I could grab some. I picked up some Coppertone for, like, $11 after my DVC discount, then rallied to my next stop.

There is another small shop to the left of Spaceship Earth that sells odds-and-ends, including those gift card "bracelets" that they sell for the Food & Wine festival. I like these because they can help you manage your budget for the F&W festival, and they're kind of like a little souvenir, too. I put $50 on a GC and that ended up being perfect for me, between two days I bought 5 small plates, 2 non-alcoholic drinks, and 1 wine flight, and I think I still had like $4 left over.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYPL0RFRQYoX5-rQCMAO14OdVZV51t4MhjbEwRNyGscOgg

It was 11:00, the booths were open, I was hungry, and I was full of joie de vivre and ready for some festival dishes.

There was one booth I was most excited to try today, and it was Macatizers at the all-new CommuniCore Hall for some good ol' Macaroni and Cheese. This was the longest line I would encounter at the festival, but it was indoors with the AC blasting, so I was living my best life.

"I want you to know this is the entire reason I flew to Orlando." I told the CM at the cash register. "I literally just hopped off the plane at MCO and went straight here for this macaroni and cheese."

She nodded like I was crazy (I am) and took my order and then I went to get my Macaroni from the window behind her.

"I heard you flew to Disney just for this macaroni and cheese." The CM who was pushing orders through at the pick-up window told me.

"You heard correctly." I nodded.

So I grabbed my Macaroni from her and my wine flight from the drink window, then I found a trash can inside the pavilion to enjoy it on top of.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYNjI4Sxo_kv_R7b51RndTStaAUrgnwgvQnZ_1RWb7NZPA

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYP5ncG4uMp3RKUr4YT4TODaldMTLfbtJ__wYVBQ_4iTow

So I got the regular ol' Macaroni and Cheese with panko breadcrumbs and the $8 wine flight, not the $14 wine flight that they also sell here.

The plain mack was good. Very good, even, but I can tell it had been microwaved since it was lukewarm on the outside and steaming hot on the inside. But the pasta was al dente and the cheese sauce was nice and mild and flavorful, though there was a bell pepper-esque taste hiding in this dish that I'm not really sure where it came from?

I paid $8 for one sip of red wine, one sip of rose, and one sip of white wine. All three sips were fine, nothing outstanding, but what is macaroni and cheese on your first day of a Disney vacation without some wine to pair with it? Three sips of wine is about all I of the alcohol I can take on a hot day in Epcot (I have no idea how drink-around-the-world-ers do it!), so it was worth it to me.

When I left Macatizers, I was right next to another stand I wanted to try, Bramblewood Bites, and ordered the bison to follow up on my Macaroni and Cheese.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYMDQ9Vqmpv_b0W6Ugd1js85VZV51t4MhjbEwRNyGscOgg

So this is bison meat topped off with a berry "gastrique", served over squash puree and I believe there are some mushrooms on this plate as well. I absolutely loved this dish and I am glad it fell on my radar before my trip. The bison had the same qualities as steak. Nothing too gamey here. And don't ask me what a "gastrique" is, but the jam-like berry sauce added a nice balance to the salty meat. There was not a ton of Bison meat on this plate, but when you got a bite that had the Bison, mushrooms, berry gastrique, and puree all in one bite, everything came together very well. I was not a fan of the squash and mushroom accoutrements on their own, I tried scraping them up after I was finished with the meat but the squash was just so "blah" without the bison and berry gastrique with it. I like mushrooms but again, this plate was just very boring once the bison was gone.

I was not planning on heading into the World Showcase today, but I was just having so much fun and felt so great that I decided to head up through Canada!

As I passed through the UK, I saw a short line forming where Alice and Mary Poppins usually meet, so I decided to jump in line. It was Alice!

"I like your ghost!" She said, enthusiastically pointing to the B&BW Ghost hand sanitizer holder on my bag (I'm sure you'll see it in this TR eventually).

"Thank you!" I told her. "It's a hitch-hiking host."

"Which do you think is sillier? A ghost or a witch?" She asked.

"That's a good question. A ghost can kind of come and go as he pleases, so I think a ghost probably plays more tricks." I replied, after some consideration.

"Oh, just like the Cheshire Cat! He's always disappearing and re-appearing." She replied.

We chatted about the Cheshire Cat for another moment or two, then took this cute little selfie holding cups of invisibili-tea.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYN3j46z8CL82M9ZGPSZAoBPKwg5ydwHipy3aIZBf9dNYQ

Then I went up to France and walked around for a little bit. I decided I was still a little hungry, and I could probably check off the Brazil booth while I was all the way up here in the World Showcase.

00-rzLKQUj5kKatSFLkdZHXV775i8RwtoKLpUn2UYhiUYOWd2e5hFH0mgUSP5mAFdFNldMTLfbtJ__wYVBQ_4iTow

Ordering these two was a big mistake on my part. First of all, both of them were truly "just okay." The pork belly was a bit tough on the outside and the beans & rice were just fine. The Pao de Queijo was a huge disappointment, I was really looking forward to trying this on this trip and they really lacked any type of flavor. The texture was about what I expected, which is this fun, bouncy, mochi-like chew, but the flavor was just not bursting with cheesey goodness like I had hoped.

Second of all, I took a few bites of the pork and a bite or two of the Pao de Queijo and realized I was not interested in fatty pork and cheese bread in this September Epcot heat, especially on the heels of some macaroni, some wine, and some bison. So I had ~half a cheese ball and ~half of the pork belly dish and said "mmm, nope, not feeling so great anymore."

I decided I should probably stay closer to the front of the Park and started walking back through France, the UK, and Canada.

Hi Kait! I’m a total lurker but wanted to pop in and let you know how much I love reading your pre trip reports and trip reports! I was in the DCP in 2015 so totally share a lot of the same sentiments about the parks especially pre and post Covid. This sounds like such an amazing trip and I can’t wait to keep reading updates. :)
