So help! Is it possible to be allergic to a hypoallergeneric dog? I just took in a 4 month old golden doodle pup. The pup came from a reputable breeder.

I can't stop itchy and sneezing. We have two dogs (beagle and husky) and have no issue with them. I already take two allergic meds to combat chronic hives.

I agree, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog not even sure what that would mean. Some people have more sensitivity to dogs then others.

There is also no guarantee w doodles because there’s no way to control which genes they get. A poodle may be less allergenic, but a golden retriever is not. So maybe the dog you got leans more toward the golden part when it comes to that.

I have a Cairn Terrier who is what I would call less allergenic. It’s a beautiful thing. A friend of mine whose kids had bad allergies got a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and had good luck with two of those so far.

I take it you’ve given the pup a bath and all that?

While poodles are said to be non allergenic, golden retrievers are not. I have no idea why this mixed breed is touted as non allergenic.
They're typically not 50/50. There are all different degrees of generations with letters and numbers signifying the lineage for these mixed-breed "breeds". The idea is that the more poodle genes in the "doodle", the more likely they are to be less allergenic (some are about 90% poodle).

Not only the dander, but the saliva is extremely allergenic. No dog is truly hypoallergenic.

Find an allergist and start a course of allergy shots to build up tolerance.

Yup, "hypoallergenic dog" is a myth. Pet dander, the most common cause of pet-related allergies, is bits of skin, not hair/fur.
Interesting... I have an assortment of allergies per the standard scratch test -pets being one. And certain dogs have definitely triggered a reaction. I now have a Bernese Mountain Dog(fur bomb) and while I thought he would be an issue, he doesn't bother me in the least. So I'd say there is something to this....

I have a lot of allergies, especially cats, but I react differently to different ones. My nephew is very allergic to dogs (he carries an epipen fir his allergies), he’s never had an issue with mine (Jack Russell/minpin mutt).

Hmm, that's so interesting because I'm the opposite. Dogs have never made me have a reaction to them - except for my Bernese Mountain Dog. I start sneezing like CRAZY and my eyes get watery after petting her for a few minutes. I've had other breeds and none of them made me sneeze. They shed more than any other dog I've had (I've mostly had chocolate labs) so maybe that has something to do with it.

My son is severely allergic to cats (even after five years of shots, his eyes still swell shut and his breathing is impacted); and less severely allergic to dogs. When begging for a dog, the doctor told him that the only safe pet for him would be a fish :(

I have a Coton de Tulear. She‘s not very smart, tough to train, and has a ton of health problems, but she’s supposedly hypoallergenic. 100% don’t recommend. I‘d rather vac up hair every day and take allergy pills.

My nephew used to get mild rashes wherever the dogs licked him when he was a baby/toddler. I think he's grown out of that now.

Doodles are NOT poodles, they have qualities from the Golden Retriever side of things too even if they are from a reputable breeder. Goldens are not hypoallergenic.

I would return the puppy ASAP before you become too attached. A reputable breeder will take it back. I have dog allergies and I could not live with a dog that gives me hives. Best to make the cut now than to rehome the pupper in a year when you realize you can't live with him/her after all.

The first thing I would do is give the dog a bath with a gentle, scent-free shampoo. The I would suggest that you seek advice from your veterinarian and also speak to your own physician. I cannot understand why you would react to this puppy when you have no reaction to your other dogs.

Oh nooo... they're so darn sweet too. I have no idea how I could ever NOT pet and cuddle with him!

Bernard are the Best! We had one many years ago (and not allergic to him)

My dad developed an allergy to dogs. Our dog is some kind of poodle mix and is supposed to be hypoallergenic. He still gets some irritation from her. If he visits here, she will not leave him alone and wants to sit next to him, and he likes dogs... so he will get some minor symptoms.

This is what I tell lots of my customers who are in the market for "non-allergic" dogs....the saliva can cause hives. The other thing...with a four month old 'doodle', the pup's coat may "harden" as he ages and the allergies may subside quite a bit.
