(Directions written by Mary Jo PKK/MJK)
In order to make this tree (see centerpiece tree pictured below), you need to use star-shaped cookie cutters in varying sizes. We used a kit called the COOKIE TREE KIT by Wilton which has 10 star cutters from very small to very large. You can find the set at this website. (Unfortunately, it appears to be out of stock at the moment.) COOKIE TREE KIT
1. Prepare the Rice Krispie treat recipe according to the directions on the RK box. You will need a double recipe for a full tree. We add a little green food coloring to the melted marshmallow/margarine before adding the Rice Krispies Another option is to stir in rainbow-colored or red and green nonpariel sprinkles.
2. Press the RK treat mixture into the star cookie cutters, making two of each size. This mixture can stick to your hands. If you have a problem with this, try rubbing some margarine on your palms.
3. Unmold the stars onto a wax-paper covered cookie sheet. Cover the stars with wax paper to keep them dust-free. We let these set for a few days so they get fairly dry--otherwise the "branches" tend to droop when they are stacked.
4. Stack the stars rotating the points. At the top, set one of the tiny stars up on its edge. You can make the tree more secure by using toothpicks between the stars or by putting a little frosting between each one. We sift a little confectioners sugar over the completed tree to look like snow.
These Rice Krispie trees are very EASY to do. Little children would have a wonderful time doing this--and the finished product looks really nice. Have fun!
