Our house is going up for sale in the next 2 weeks. Its 19 years old. The ceramic tile in DH's shower is in good shape but some of the grout is stained black. I can put clorox on it but that doesnt completely take care of the problem. Is there anything else I can use to either clean it or cover up the stains? I saw a grout "paint" somewhere about a year ago. Does anyone have some suggestions for me? thanks!

Also - the shower door has white stains - what can I use to get rid of those?

Maybe Mr. Clean Magic Eraser... :confused3

I'm not sure if that is strong enough but I use it for everything and it always works!

Clorox Soft Scrub or other paste type bleach based product and a scrub brush and a lot of time on your hands and knees!

the magic eraser should work wonders on the shower door. that's just 'soap scum'

(FYI - in the future - I reccommend using a 'squeegie' on shower doors after each shower. my mother used to YELL at us if we didn't do it...but it really cut down on the maintenance of the doors)

about the grout - is it on the 'floor' of the shower (hide with a bath mat?) or on the walls? if the walls - i'd try the paint if you can find it

I use Soft Scrub with bleach on nasty grout -- scrub it on and then leave it, wipe it up with wet towels later.

On one house we sold, we used white grout paint to cover the dark colored grout in one bathroom -- worked well enough to sell the house. We got the grout paint in the tile section of Home Depot about 4 years ago.

The only thing that has worked on my tub grout is the Clorox bleach pen. I get the same problem with the black mold in the grout. I leave it on for an hour and when I wipe it off it is as good as new!! I swear by this stuff.

I wouldn't paint to cover up mold or water stains. We just had our whole bathroom regrouted and it looks brand new, I would recomend this.

You can try CLR (that's the name of the product) but be very careful using it. Wear gloves and turn on the fan in the bathroom. It works well, you just have to take precautions.

If the mold goes deep enough into the grout, you won't be able to just surface clean it. You can probably make it look better, but the real fix is to have it regrouted. This would be normal maintenance for a 19 year old house. My house is 11 years old and we are getting to the point that some of the grout in various parts of the house needs to be redone.

There is a product from Tilex that gets to the root of the mold. I used this in my bathroom and it works wonders. Spray it and walk away...bad fumes! comes back later and rinse it all down. I wish I could remember the name but it is sold with the regular tilex products.

I have a clorox pen and a magic eraser so I might try those first. I'll have to do it tomorrow night after DH leaves for work (he's a reporter). Clorox makes him sick - cant stand the smell.

Good thing we shipped our 13 month old off to Grandmas this weekend. We have a lot of dirty smelly things to take care of around the house. At least we wont be changing any poopy diapers :teeth:

I posted this on the other black mold thread last week..

Soak a bunch of toilet paper with Clorox and mush it on to the mold area ..we usually just do it around the tub..for a wall maybe tape it on..

Let it sit there for a few hours and the mold will be gone..or much lighter.

This is what I was going to suggest. Works marvelously for us and is VERY little work. It's in a dark blue spray bottle.

I use Tilex mold and mildew remover. I just spray it and thats it, in about 10 minutes its gone.

I've had good luck with X-14 Mildew Stain Remover

consider calling serv-pro. they specialize in clean ups after fires, floods...i had them in last year to clean the grout in my kitchen and it looks as good as the day it was installed 7 years ago (when they can get purple grape juice stains out of white grout i'm impressed). they were realy inexpensive (charged by the square foot) and would be well worth hiring.
