Got my hair trimmed this morning, no shampooing, but she did use the iron on my hair to style it. Total was $16 and I left a $3 tip. Now I'm questioning myself and wish I would have left more. How much would you have tipped?

I think the guideline is 15-20% so you're in the right range and have no need to feel any qualms.

I know where you're coming from, though. I often second-guess myself and generally throw in an dollar or two because I don't want to feel squeamish for the sake of a buck.

When I go get my hair shampoo'd and cut it is $22 and I tip $5. I always tip $5 though even if it were a $12 kids cut. That is my minimum threshold. If there were more of us getting cuts and the bill was bigger I would tip 20% of whatever the bill was or maybe a few bucks more.

I tip 20% (I don't know how much my cut is, since I get it highlighted at the same time, and it's $130 - which is VERY inexpensive here!), but DH gives $20 for his $12 cut. In your situation, I would've just given a $20 instead of $19.

20% is my standard tipping for eating and hair cutting. If I feel they went above and beyond, I will throw in something extra. If I feel they just barely did the minimum...15% is what they get.

I would have given a $20 and called it a day. :)

BTW, that's a super cheap haircut. I think mine run @ $50. So I definatetly wouldn't have a problem paying a $4 tip to make it an even 20. Heck, a flat iron costs extra here too.

Thanks for giving your opinions! I paid for the haircut on a credit card and gave the $3 as cash. Next time I'll make sure I just take a $20.

:thumbsup2 I would have done the same thing. My haircuts are usually $25 and I just give $30-- I guess I like nice round numbers. Plus I would feel silly asking for $1 back.

I think that $3 was fine. On a $16 haircut, I probably would have just handed them a $20 and let them keep the $4 as the tip.

When I take my group home residents for their haircuts (they are males, and we usually go to Supercuts), we get $12 haircuts and tips $1. I think that's pretty low, but that's what the group home has always done. I kind of get the lower tip for the guys cuts though, because the just get buzzed with the clippers and their haircut takes a total fo about three minutes, so it's not like the lady is spending a tone of time fussing over them for almost no tip. In about 15 minutes she has cut all three of them, and she certainly couldn't cut a woman's hair in that amount of time, so maybe it's not as cheap as I think it is. ;)

20% of $16 is $3.20, so you have nothing to worry about. You tipped 20%. :thumbsup2 I know how you feel, but I'm on the opposite end. My hair service will cost $125 and 20% is a $25 tip. I'll think, 'Wow, that seems like too much.' But I remind myself to always tip 20%.....regardless of the total amount.

For myself, I have never tipped lower then 20%. I tip on the total amount, that includes any products I buy too.

I go to a cheapo place and the amount they charge varies from $13-16 for exactly the same service. :confused3 I always give them $20.

It depends on what I get done. If it's just a trim someplace like SuperCuts I'll give $3, if it's at a salon and I get my hair styled I give $5.

I have a wonderful hair stylist (what's the right word? Hair cutter? Beautician? :confused3) Anyway, she gives the best haircuts I've ever had. It's $10.00 for a cut and $18.00 if she shampoos and styles it. That's a ridiculously low amount so I usually pay $20.00 when she just cuts it and $28 when she cuts and styles it. I know that's like 100% tip on the cut, but she's very good and doesn't charge near enough. She's the owner of the salon.

When I get a shampoo, cut, highlight, style it's $65.00 and I usually give her $85.00. Again, she does an amazing job and I love her to death. I only get it highlighted about every 3 months (if that) so it's not a huge deal to leave a $20.00 tip.

But when I lived in another state, my haircut/shampoo/style was $25.00 so I just left $30.00. I tend to pay what I think it's worth. In our are $25.00 was still pretty reasonable.

Wow, I would think that 20% for a haircut and style is low. I just got my hair cut shampooed and styled yesterday, price $20 I left $30, so a 50% tip and I do the same thing when they cut my daughter's hair, price $10 I leave $15. I am a server and work for tips so I get it I guess. I lokk at it like this my hair stylist spent an hour on me only and I don't know what she gets paid from the salon but it probably is not that good. I can wait on 3 differnt tables in an hour and make $10-$15 or more per table.

I don't get a shampoo when I get a cut as I wash my hair every morning. It takes maybe 15 minutes for a cut, tops. It's never anywhere close to an hour.

When I get my hair color touched up and a trim (have had the same style/color for awhile now). My stylist usually spends about an hr and a half on me-- it's $60 and I give her a $20 tip. I don't adjust that amount if I buy any products, though.

I Do know what my stylist gets paid, she gets 50% of whatever I pay the salon. So if I get a $40 cut, she gets $20 (it takes her less than 30 minutes to wash cut, style and dry my hair), if I get a $120 color, she gets $60. It takes her about an hour to do my color on the rare occasion I get the color there, but she takes a haircut in between while I am waiting for my color to process, so she can easily do a haircut plus a $120 color in one hour, that's $80. I think a 20% tip is plenty, she's not making $3.00 an hour like a waitress is.

Tipping gets so complicated. I am glad I go to a non-tipping salon! It is $52 for a wash, blow dry and style, so I only go every few months!
