How would you pronounce Finola? I have a friend with a daughter named Finola but she pronounces it Fiona? I tried googling it and did find one place that says they are interchangeable but I cant see how?

I've always heard it Finola...as in rhymes with granola

Fiona is a different name altogether, and it's pronounced Fee-ohn-a

These days though with all the rage of invented spelling (and invented pronunciation) who knows?

I say Fi NO la. Like Finola Hughes from General Hospital. I don't see how someone could pronounce it Fiona unless it is a foreign translation....

Same as the PP's - if she wanted it pronounced Fiona, why the heck didn't she spell it that way? :confused3 Parents can be cruel.

that is the issue I am having.:confused3. I cant understand "how" it is pronounced that way. when I asked her mom, she said they are interchangeable but I could only found 1 post on 1 baby names site that said it was? Its been bugging me ever since. Its like "Mary" being pronounced "June":rotfl2:

I think she misspelled the kids name....poor kid.:headache:

That's exactly what I was thinking. There was a woman on the Dis a few years ago who misspelled her DDs name and butchered it pretty badly. I think she was actually pregnant at the time so I'm hoping someone corrected her at some point.

Incidentally Oprah's name was originally supposed to be Orpah, a woman in the bible, but was misspelled. Somehow, I can't imagine her as Orpah. :)

Sad. And I can't believe these two names are "interchangeable". If mom read that, I think it was a misprint or misread. Poor kid. What fun she's going to have for all her years in school, constantly "correcting" everyone's actual correct pronunciation.

Just out of curiosity, where did you read that these were interchangeable? I'm very curious now.

Sorry, she's a dingbat. They are two totally different names.

I'm leaving for lunch with my friend Jennifer. It's pronounced Jessica. :rotfl:

Well, I have never seen Fiona spelled as Finola. Variation which I have seen are Phiona, Fionna and Phyona. Fin-o-la

Once she told me how it was pronounced, I would pronounce it FIONA.

This is how I say it, this is how we say it in our Irish heritage family. :)

It was probably her post!

I'm guessing the child will end up going by both. Fiona as a nick name Finola as her legal name.

Depending on how old the child is, I guess I'd hope the mom changes the spelling. It's pretty easy to make that change.

Weird.

Both traditional Irish girl's names, but it doesn't seem to be one of those cases where Celtic pronunciation doesn't match the spelling.

Here's a link to a page where you click on the name and then can hear the late author Frank McCourt pronouncing it.

Not quite. While they are both traditional Gaelic-language names, Fiona is most definitely Scots, while Finola is Irish. They are not variations on the same name, any more than Irene and Eileen are (fwiw, Irene is actually Greek, not Irish.)

Fiona is very popular in Ireland, true enough, but so is Chloe; not every name that is popular with Irish people is actually of Irish origin.

Thanks for that page with the Irish name pronunciations! Loved Frank and his brother Malachy.

You spell the mother's name "S-T-U-P-I-D." ::yes:: God bless that poor doomed child. Forever "correcting" people who have it right all thanks to Mommy Dumbest.

Why do people do these things to their children?
