Bobcat maybe? Or fox or barred owl. All of these critters have scared the beejesus out of me at one time or another around my house.

While I don't know what OP heard, I can say that barred owls have some of the craziest vocalizations. We have a couple that really like the trees in and near our home. I've been woken up numerous times in the middle of the night by all of the craziness that comes out of them. Scared the heck out of me until I heard something more owl-like and was able to place it with the specific bird.

While I don't know what OP heard, I can say that barred owls have some of the craziest vocalizations. We have a couple that really like the trees in and near our home. I've been woken up numerous times in the middle of the night by all of the craziness that comes out of them. Scared the heck out of me until I heard something more owl-like and was able to place it with the specific bird.

I thought I had a howler monkey outside my bedroom one night this fall. Good lord was that thing loud.

Like others have said, foxes make some really wild sounds. Go on YouTube and look up fox screaming and you see if it matches what you heard. Fisher Cats also can sound like a woman screaming.

Rabbits also scream, it sounds like a person screaming, its horrible.

I vote for coyotes! We have packs of them around and they howl and carry on at night. It is quite scary if you don't know what they are. Maybe that's what was screaming.

If it sounds like a scream it is probably a Barn Owl. Not only is it annoying it is constant.
