Have you ever been subject to a crime?

Had my diaper bag containing my wallet, cellphone and car keys stolen from a playground, I was stuck with 5 kids under 8. Fortunately my parents lived 1/2 mile away and I had a double stroller. I ID’d her at the police station when I went in to file a report (I wasn’t her only victim that day).

When I was young, our house was burglarized. They took everything, including our 4-month-old puppy and my piggy bank.
Back in the day, someone smashed in my car window in an attempt to steal my radio.
About 10 years ago, as I was walking, I was punched in the back by some random man. As he attacked me, he yelled "All Jews must die"

Not too often, but it has happened. I had someone steal my lawnmower once. They broke the lock on the shed, but not the one on the gate, so they must have lifted the mower over a 6 foot pivacy fence. 🙄 Another time, when I was out of town, I found that the couch had been rifled through. Weirdly, all they took was my sneakers (which were already pretty worn) and this costume bullet-proof vest which my friends had used as a prop for a short movie. They did move a piggy bank of change, but didn't take it. All of my electronics, games and movies, etc. were totally untouched.

The scariest one though was one morning I found that someone had tried to pry my iron door off the frame. They were unable to do it - good job, security door! Still, I was home that night, so it freaked me out. My mom insisted I get an alarm system that day!

Tree ornaments from the Christmas Shop at Disney. They were at the bottom of the stroller, covered and well hidden (still, I should have known better). It was our last day, and we had two more rides to hit. I just figured who at Disney, of all places, would rifle through strollers to steal things...I know, I know. Sigh.

My parents had their car stolen from their driveway. The person who took it turned themselves in, and they were able to pick it up unharmed and, nothing was missing.

When I was in Jr. High, somebody stole my favorite volleyball shoes out of a locker room. We were at an away game and I guess our coach didn’t get a key to lock the room or didn’t bother to do it if he did. I don’t know. I just know I still miss those shoes.

Local drug addict rifled through our warehouse and took a few things, we're still finding stuff missing so I don't know what all he actually got. Mainly he just rearranged things - he made little piles of stuff all over the building because he couldn't figure out how to get out. He got in by climbing over a pile of lumber and opening a door way in the back that had a broken lock. We hadn't fixed it yet because of how hard it was to get to and the fact that there was literally a five foot pile of lumber in front of it. All of the other doors in the building have double locked dead bolts so couldn't be opened without a key. He had piles at every door, like he'd tried to get out, then just left what he was holding at the time there.

I must have gone down there between "visits" and once I realized what was going on I called the police to make a report. After they left I ran to the store to get a new lock for the door and a cheap alarm. 30 minutes later I drove up to the building and there the guy is again, loading stuff into his car in broad daylight. I went a little further on down the road to our driveway, pulled in where I couldn't be seen and called the police again. Guy comes out of the building and comes face to face with an armed sheriff's deputy. We were able to get everything he had in his car that time back, the stuff he'd taken previously never showed up.

Scariest, closest call was my parents when I was in college (early 90s). They lived way out in the country and at the time had a smallish black dog that was always out running around where she could be seen (in other words, anyone driving up and down that part of the road knew there was a dog that lived nearby meeting that description).

After dark one night someone knocks on the door. My Dad NEVER opened the door at night for anyone, but he always answered it so they'd know someone was home in case they were looking to break in. Guy tells my Dad that he hit a small black dog with his car but he couldn't find it and could my Dad come out and help him look. Thankfully, our dog was asleep on the couch. Dad told him no, he'd look in the morning but our dog was in the house so it wasn't her.

Guy goes down to my Grandfather's house (next door) and tries the same thing. Grandaddy didn't open the door either. Tried a couple more neighbors and finally got one to open the door. The guy beat the homeowner up, tied him to a chair and robbed him.

The worst issue we've experienced was when we were robbed while on vacation to Disneyworld. It was roughly $15,000 worth of goods, from computers/tvs to video games to jewelry. It turned out to be the then-boyfriend of our daughter's best friend. He went to jail for a couple of years for it.

Had my backpack stolen off a train in Germany. I lost some cash and clothes, but not the end of the world.

Our neighbour was targeted in an oddball way. The "thief" didn't actually enter her house (definitely a good thing as she was a frail little thing). Rather they "re-arranged" her garden ornaments in some random or not-so-random pattern, gnomes, ornaments, everything.

Oddball.

Never been involved in a crime, but I do know of a member here that set fire to a place they volunteered just to get attention.

A business we owned when I was in college was broken into. Cash and a few other things were stolen. The way they broke in we figured it had to be someone familiar with the business. It ended up being a local cop we had hired when he was off duty for weekend security.

DD's car was gone through in our driveway once. She didn't have anything of value in the car

This didn't happen directly to us but was close enough to leave us rattled and still does. The neighbors (mother and adult son) across the street from use were murdered 2.5 years ago around 9:30pm on a Tuesday night. The police would only say it was a 'home invasion' so the whole neighborhood was freaking out not knowing if they would come to other houses. It ended up being a domestic type situation.

Someone stole our Jeep from in front of our house years ago. DH's briefcase and golf clubs were in the back. The police saw someone other than DH driving that car and followed them in case we didn't let them use our car. When they sped away, the cops didn't chase them so as not to hurt anyone. The thieves tried to run it into the front porch of a house, but got caught up in the bushes in front and they left it there. The insurance paid for the repair of the car and the stolen items.

FF, DS had friends at the house all the time. Like @Forevermarypoppins, one of his "friends" stole a bunch of jewelry from my bedroom. He was smart enough to not take anything with dates or initials engraved in them. We had no idea who stole them until we heard that the kid had died of a heroin overdose. Everything added up when we heard that. I feel badly for his mother. Again, insurance paid for the jewelry, but I'm very sad about losing it. It was from all over the world. Friends had brought back pieces from their vacations and we brought pieces from ours. Not terribly expensive jewelry, but sentimental that isn't easily replaced.
