Has anyone ever flown to Anaheim for just 1 day at Disneyland?

OP here~
Well...I booked the trip! But I realized I have a free Hyatt night so we're staying at the Hyatt Regency Dec 13. Not walking distance but they have a shuttle, and this is one trip where I will NOT be spending much time in the hotel!

Thanks for all the input and sharing your thoughts. I would have done 1 day if I didn't have that free night available. I'll try the one day trip sometime when it's just me.

I'm crossing fingers and toes that this works out. I feel like early December is so up in the air due to weather and germs, but hopefully I'll make it :)
Well, you convinced me too. We're flying down on Monday the 16th, getting in to LAX around 6:30 pm, hopefully in the parks in time to see one of the nighttime celebrations, ride Tiana's (hoping the operating hours expand beyond 10 pm by then), and pick up a few holiday treats, go full bore all day Tuesday, see the second holiday nightime show Tuesday, close down the parks and come home early Wednesday morning to struggle through a day of work and school. My daughter is 16, so she's got youth on her side to power through with very little sleep and I'll just caffeinate repeatedly :P.

I've never seen World of Color: Season of Light, so that will be nice, and I don't think I've ever been when California Adventure was open until 11 pm -- I love late nights at the parks. I've started to build my list of holiday foods and am super-excited.

Have a wonderful time! I've been working on my holiday food list, too!

Well, we did it! Our 1-day trip to Disneyland was Saturday, November 23rd. We had some challenges, but no regrets. I love Disneyland so even with the hiccups I could never have a bad day there!

First off, I did make a last minute change to my plans. Originally we were going to fly in and out on the same day. I decided on Thursday to change my flight at no extra charge and depart Sunday morning (today). I found a Priceline express deal for $132 and we got the Marriott Suites.

Departing PDX - our flight left on time and we arrived a few minutes early to SNA. My two year old did great on the flight despite the early wake up call. The EVE shuttle was on time and the driver was incredibly kind and friendly. Just fyi, sometimes they send an ART bus instead of an actual EVE vehicle. I actually prefer this. We were the only passengers picked up from SNA. $15 one way, kids under 3 are free.

Arrived at Disneyland at 10:10 a.m. First stop was the locker room to lighten up my backpack load. Then we leisurely strolled through Main Street taking in the decorations! So amazing and beautiful. My son loved watching the horse drawn trolley go up and down Main Street. Now for a challenge, the lines for the Photo Pass and character meet & greets were much longer than during other non-holiday visits. Unfortunately, my son just didn’t have the ability to wait in the long lines for those things (can’t blame him!) We just watched the characters from a distance and took some selfies instead.

His most favorite things of the day oddly enough were the Disneyland ducks, the band at Castle Promenade, and the Mary Poppins performance. We did make it to Fantasyland theater where they have a Santa area but again he could not manage to wait in the lines and I was not going to force that at all.

It did start to drizzle throughout the afternoon. Here is where a few more challenges entered the picture. We waited for the parade for an hour and a half but both performances were cancelled. Darn! I really wanted to see the parade! Because of the rain and other factors, the 3 changes of clothes I brought for my son were not enough. I also had his Mickey bubble wand with us and it went off inside my backpack sometime in the afternoon and got everything soaked. My phone cord and portable battery stopped working at this point. I didn’t feel comfortable letting my phone die so we left at around 6:30 to go back to the hotel. If you buy an EVE pass you also get free access to ART on the day of your fare. The ART buses seemed to be on a better, more frequent schedule this time.

We stopped at Small World before leaving to take in the twinkling lights - so magical!

I’m really happy I got to see Disneyland during the holidays! I probably wouldn’t do this type of trip with a young toddler again but I would definitely do it if I wanted to squeeze in a solo Disney trip - mom’s need a break sometimes too. Haha.

Wow! That's so awesome! I'm glad you went and had a great time even with the hiccups. My teens still love the Disneyland ducks lol. I'm going to look into the EVE shuttle, it sounds great. Thanks for reporting back. Now I'm even more excited to go :)

ps...Those bubble wands! We've had leaky ones before, too.

I'm considering a slightly crazy idea. Fly into SNA for 9:30 am, leave SNA at 9:00 pm. It seems like I could get 7 or so hours in the park, but I'm wondering if this scheme just wouldn't work as smoothly as I imagine. I'd pick a day that's supposed to be lower crowds if possible, maybe a weekend to see the Christmas decorations and try to ride Tiana.

Has anyone else ever done something like this?

Thanks!
We flew there and back in one day just to buy our annual passes a few years ago!

One last update! We made it back to PDX yesterday morning at ~10:30 a.m. SNA is a fantastic airport if you are attempting a quick trip like this. Especially with no luggage and TSA pre-check.

The EVE shuttle was on-time once again. I was worried about waiting in the dark that early in the morning, but to my surprise the shuttle was already there when we got outside (5:40 a.m.). It was the same driver who picked us up on Saturday and he was awesome! If anyone has questions about booking the EVE shuttle, drop a line and I am happy to help. I have always had excellent service with them but the Away We Go app for booking is not intuitive and could definitely use a revamp.

We made it to SNA at ~6:05 a.m. and it was a breeze through security with TSA pre-check. Our flight started boarding at 7:05 a.m. so we had about an hour to spare. My little guy was a good sport the whole trip but I could tell he was worn out. I definitely think changing my plans to leaving in the morning was the right choice. Even though we left the park at the same time that we would have if we were flying out in the evening, we were able to go back to the hotel and rest in a comfy bed rather then getting straight on another airplane.

When we got home, we both hit a major wall. I am glad we had the day to cuddle and rest so make sure you give yourself a buffer day! Final thoughts - if you do a trip like this, manage your expectations and go with the flow; having a locker was very handy so I recommend considering that; and have a back-up plan for if your phone dies - I feel like it is game over if that happens because everything is so reliant on apps these days!

Can't wait to hear how everyone else's trips go! Have the best time! :)

So glad you made the trip and had fun!!!

One thought: could you have purchased one of the charger batteries that they sell at the park? They are the ones that you can exchange for a fully charged one once you drain the current battery?

In any case, it sounds like you made the best of the challenges and have a wonderful memory with your little one!

This saved me a couple of years ago! I got one of the little portable charger packs in GCH (there's a vending machine right at the exit from the lobby area into the outdoor courtyard like you're heading into DTD. I bought it because I'd brought a charger plug that had the wrong port for the cord or something like that. The Rocket Rod pack comes with the portable battery and an assortment of short cables that fit many different port types. I also ended up using it a lot as a backup battery because it kept my phone at a steady charge. It doesn't charge it all the way up, but it keeps it at a steady level so it doesn't die. Very small and light compared to my regular battery backup.

Very good to know! Thanks for the info! I saw the fuel rod kiosk in the locker room but I was unsure of whether it would come with the right adaptor cord for my phone! I was hesitant to spend the $$$ and possibly be in the same predicament. In hindsight, knowing it comes with all the adaptors, that would have been an excellent solution! And I like that it is smaller than the brick I was carrying with me! I ended up finding a new cord and charger at the hotel gift shop. I joked with the gal working there that it was my souvenir this trip. :)

Quick update on our 1+ day trip, which went fabulously despite a couple of hiccups.

We flew into LAX, arrived at 6:30 pm, made the short trek from the Southwest terminal to the LAX-It ride share lot, got an Uber in about 10 minutes and were on our way to Disneyland. We got stuck in traffic for about 20 minutes due to a crash at the 105 to 605 split but still made pretty good time. After a quick check-in at Hotel Lulu and some wardrobe changes, we were on our way to the parks and made it to the hub just in time to watch the 8:30 Wintertime Enchantment of the castle.

We decided on Rancho del Zocalo for a late dinner and split the Tinga Enchiladas (had a good spicy kick). We had time to ride the tea cups before settling in by it's a Small World for the 9:30 fireworks. After the fireworks, we scooted quickly to Rise and were in the briefing room in under 20 minutes. From there we hit Winnie the Pooh and made our way back to Fantasyland, where we rode Alice in Wonderland, followed by Runaway Railway and Big Thunder, and did some browsing and shopping in the Emporium before calling it a night around 11:30. The parks felt blissfully empty after 10:00 and we were able to just meander and enjoy the decorations.

We decided to sleep in a little the following day and planned to arrive just after 8, bypass the rope drop madness, and head to Pixar Pier, skipping our usual rope drop of Guardians (our favorite ride). However, despite a little Starbucks snafu in mobile ordering a chai tea for my daughter (it auto selected the wrong location, not the one at Hyatt House), we still made it into the park just before rope drop and decided to join the relatively small crowd headed to Guardians.

After riding Guardians and making a LL selection to ride it again between 9:30-10:30, we headed to the Pier and did Incredicoaster, Pal Around, and Goofy's Sky School before picking up a breakfast corn dog for my daughter (we were in fact the "First Corn Dog of the Day" but sadly Corndog Castle didn't have the special button).

Unfortunately, on our way to Little Mermaid, my daughter noticed her soles were falling off of her Nike shoes, one of them halfway and the other a little. We walked on Little Mermaid while brainstorming options for next steps to fix the shoe-tastrophe. We asked at the entrance to Little Mermaid about places that would possibly have rubber bands or tape for an interim fix and were referred to the Baby Care center, which unfortunately had nothing. However, at Sarge's Hut the cashier hooked us up with some clear packing tape. I wrapped the front of the worst shoe with several rounds of tape so we could make our way to Guardians (my very-appearance-conscious kiddo was not happy with walking around with a crinkly, sticky taped shoe). While in line for Guardians, we decided we would catch the 10:30 Storytime with Deadpool and Wolverine and pick up my sticky toffee pudding macaron as planned, then head out of the parks through the Grand (checked out the gingerbread house on the way) for a quick Uber ride to Shoe City for new shoes. Since we were going to have a time gap, we booked our next LL for Indy at 1:20 (we were hoping for Tiana's Bayou Adventure, but LL was not available for that at all on the 17th and the ride was down for large chunks of the day).

The new shoes were quickly acquired and we took an Uber back to Downtown Disney and entered Disneyland via the monorail. We rode it's a Small World Holiday and Autopia via standby with less than 5 minutes' wait, then took the train back to Main Street station. We tried to get a silhouette at Disneyana, but the artists were heading on break. We met Mickey, got a birthday button, and did our Gingerbread Magic Key shot, stowed our spare clothes in a locker (change of clothes/ponchos/flip flops for Tiana's and our jackets, since it was a warm afternoon) then checked back on the sihouettes, but the artists weren't available at either location.

Our two hours had passed since we booked Indy, so we booked a Space Mountain LL for 2:20, then took a lunch break (gingerbread cake for me from Plaza Inn and a chil/mac bread bowl for my daughter) and picked up a mobile order of gingerbread from Jolly Holiday to bring home.

Indy was down, which got us a MEP, but also left an awkward schedule gap. We decided to wait the 15 minutes to ride Star Tours standby. Unfortunately, when we headed to Space Mountain after Star Tours, we were told that it was "down for Lightning Lane" but we would get an MEP (the ride itself wasn't down, because they were still letting people into the standby line, which was strange to me).

It took a few minutes for the MEP to pop up; once we were able to make a new LL selection, we picked Matterhorn for 3:40. Since we again had an awkward schedule gap, but Tiana's didn't look like it would have any LL availability for the day, we decided to suck it up and head for the 45-minute standby line, crossing our fingers the ride would stay open. After changing clothes and shoes and depositing our to-stay-dry clothes back in the locker, we stopped at Tropical Hideaway and picked up the POG float (excellent) to nosh on in line.

The Tiana's wait ended up being only 20 minutes, which was nice, but adding in the changes of clothes/shoes, it was an investment of over an hour, which both my daughter and I concluded wasn't worth it -- we were very underwhelmed by the ride and it definitely got us too wet to have stayed in our normal clothes/shoes.

We were able to hit Matterhorn, Jungle Cruise, Indy (MEP), Haunted Mansion Holiday (LL), Pirates (LL but not needed), Space Mountain (MEP), and Buzz (walk on) in fairly short order before hopping back over to DCA a little before 7:00. Daughter got dinner at Smokejumpers while I picked up mac and cheese from Holiday Duets (ordered earlier at the same time as my Macaron).

After dinner, we wandered through Redwood Challenge Trail before it closed, then went on Midway Mania (LL), Incredicoaster (immediate return LL), RSR (single rider) and picked up pumpkin bread pudding at Aunt Cass's cafe before walking briskly to catch the 9:30 World of Color show. Following WOC, we hit Soarin (had LL but didn't need it), then caught the 10:00 pm Animation Academy (Olaf) and Monsters, Inc. We originally had aspirations of hopping back to Disneyland for a few more rides, but my daughter was really fading by this point, so we hopped back to Disneyland to empty our locker and checked once more at the silhouette studio (still a long line at 11:00 pm) before calling it a night and walking back to the hotel to pack up and get a few hours of sleep before our 4:45 a.m. pick up back to LAX.

We missed the holiday overlays in Carsland and weren't able to line up a good mobile order window for the gingerbread at Harbour Galley, but other than those two things, we were able to accomplish everything we wanted to do.

WOW!!! I'd call that a super successful whirlwind trip!!! I'm so impressed at how much you managed to see and do, even with the little snafus. I'm not sure I do that much in 4 days :D

It sounds like a wonderful trip. Too bad about the shoes, though! That's a good idea going the night before so you can stay late.

I'm curious about the breakfast corndog! What is it exactly?

Oh, I just meant that she had a corn dog for breakfast. She doesn't like sweet breakfast and we discovered on our trip in September that Corn Dog castle opens at 9:30, so she requested that for breakfast since the Hotel Lulu doesn't have complimentary breakfast.

Corn Dog Castle did briefly offer a sausage and egg corn dog, but I think that went by the wayside a while ago: https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/07/26/were-trying-a-breakfast-corn-dog-in-disneyland/

I can see doing this if we had MKs, flights on miles, and a good back up plan (hotel that was available with points) in case the night flight back home got cancelled. Heck, I’m about to talk myself into by reading this thread!!

PS I live in Dallas, and my one day trip to DL (if I had a MK and got the flight on miles) could cost less than just parking at Jerryworld!
That’s what I came to say. Ask yourself how you’d feel (from, like, I dropped my Mickey bar to full nuclear meltdown) if your outgoing flight was so late that it would be time to turn around and leave by the time you arrived. We had a 12 hour delay when we went in September and it ate our no-park day. If that had been my ONLy day, that would have been a lot of wasted money.

So have a good backup plan in mind—scope out hotel and flight options if you were to need/decide to stay overnight. Look at other airline options as well, in case you decide you MUST get there—you can make educated choices more quickly. And pack a toothbrush and clean underwear just in case!! 😝

You also have to factor if you’re driving yourself too. If your tire blows up because of a small nail (like what happened to our rental car) especially after 6pm, you very well could be in trouble. I’m only 45 minutes assuming good traffic from Disneyland to my hotel and that would certainly serve a safety hazard. In my opinion I would not recommend just heading in for 1 day and at least give yourself sufficient backup days if you’re not planning to use an Uber or other transportation so that you can get to a shop safely when unexpected things like this happen.
