The three movies I remember him most in aren't his award winning movies, just ones I liked a lot and watched over and over. They are: The Poseidon Adventure, The Firm, and The Birdcage. He was also the voice in Home Depot commercials for years.

I remember hearing decades ago, that at the start of his and Dustin Hoffman's careers, they were both voted "least likely to succeed" by the Pasadena Playhouse in CA.

RIP Mr & Mrs Hackman. (The dog too.)

It appears that they may have been dead for quite some time. If so, it's sad that there was no one who kept in touch with them and would have contacted authorities if they could not contact them.

This is actually a fear of mine. That I will die at home and it will takes days or weeks for someone to discover my body.

He had a wife who was 31 years younger than him and younger than his oldest son. She didn't exactly need a regular welfare check and safe to assume she was watching out for him.

it's been reported that Mr. Hackman's cane and sunglasses were near his body leading to speculation that he had fallen. I have to wonder if he was on his way in or out of the home (he was found in the mudroom) when he heard his wife shout out or fall in the course of having her OWN medical event. aged 96, reportedly unsteady on his feet...he could have fallen himself and been unable to get up or summon help.

May they RIP. Loved him as an actor. Have seen almost all of his movies.
It all does sound a bit strange. I hope they can figure out what happened so the family can have some closure.

Well, that's all speculation but I don't think you are far off. Taking care of someone in their 90's is not easy, even if they are in the best of health.
