Hi everyone - I'm usually a lurker but I need opinions today!

I am having a garage sale this Friday and it is going to be HOT outside. My oldest daughter is 5 and she is saving money for an American Girl doll. I was considering having her set up a little table with drinks and possibly treats such as donuts for the AM and cookies for the afternoon. Does anyone have any success stories or suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Drink stands do GREAT around here, especially if its a community yard sale! My girls made $35 the last time they did it!

I do buy drinks at yard sales, but only if they have sugar free options and only if it is bottled. I tend to not want to drink the entire thing standing there out of a cup because I want to get on with the yard sale-ing AND I don't want to have to stop for a potty break later! :goodvibes

I will buy my kids donuts or muffins as well.

Dawn

My kids sold pink lemonade at our last garage sale to earn some money for our Disney trip. They had fun and were occupied and made some cash. It worked out great!

my kids love to have "LEMONADE' stands. Unfortunately nobody will buy!!!! It's pretty sad when I have to call my friends to drive by and buy lemonade.

I make a point of always stopping to buy from kids having lemonade stands.

I suggest cans or bottles (water, soda), and keep them in a cooler. It would probably be a good idea to keep the snacks in a cooler too. We normally charge only $.50 per cup, but you could probably charge $1.00 if its bottled water.

Good luck, even when we don't sell any the kids have fun pouring the lemonade for each other

Although my kids do not have allergies, I would be sensitive to them. If your daughter happened to give a cookie to someone with an allergy there could be legal issues. I would have someone supervise her and make sure that a parent was present when handing out food. Don't mean to be a old fart, but unfortunately, these are the times we live in.

I would get some bottled water-maybe some other bottled drink choices. Make sure they are ice cold and I think your DD can make some good money on a hot day. I would forget about the snacks unless it's something your DD really wants to do.

Have a great sale.

My suggestions:

I would also stick with bottled water and one or two kinds of canned soda. Don't try to please everyone. In fact, I would just purchase products that WE use and that way, whatever is left over will be used.

$1 for a sealed can or bottle is no big deal. I think people prefer sealed products nowadays.

I personally don't think food is worth the trouble.

I would suggest the kids make fancy posters and signs because that's the kind of thing that draws me in. LOL

but good luck and I hope your kids have a great time!

We make "break-and-bake" chocolate chip cookies, and sell those along with lemonade every time we have a garage sale.

last year, DDs made $80!

We always sell pop & popcorn at our sales & the kids sell lemonade/chips at the front of the driveway. They sell a glass for .25 & usually do pretty good :)

My kids have done that several times before. They always sell bottled water, a regular soda and a diet soda. They also have popsicles for kids and have sold watermelon & cantaloupes from my dad's garden. It is always a huge hit.

My kids make homemade lemonade and cookies. They sell out quickly every time. I also have a bottle of hand sanitizer, have them use tongs so nobody touches cookies with bare hands. Have plenty of napkins and a scoop for the ice.

I also think it is a good idea to have cans in a cooler. You could skip the food but my children really enjoy it. They make pretty good $ too and even get double what they ask for since they are kids! Go for it.

Being the frugal type, I offered no-name brand for .50 and name brand for $1.
I was surprised at the fact that just about everyone wanted to pay extra for the brand soda.
My tip: make sure you have plenty of Coke products, both types of sweetner.

if it is going to be really hot, popsicles would be a great thing too....it u cant keep them cold enough in the cooler, u may have to run in and out...i know that my kids have had great luck with the "frozen treats" at their sales when they were younger...:cool1:

In the past we have sold bottled water for $1.00 each and freeze-pops for 25 cents each. They were kept in a big cooler with lots of ice.

You figure a 24 pack of water is about $4.00; if you sell all 24 bottles, you're making $20 profit on each case!

Same with the freeze-pops, in a box there are about 50, so if you pay $4.00 for a box of 50 and you sell them all, you'll make about $8.50 on each box.

I would skip the pop and homemade treats. Water is something for the adults and freeze-pops are something for the kids who come.

DSIL and I did a joint sale (part of a mega-community-wide sale), and made way more money on "concessions" than merchandise.

We offered: Home-baked scones and Starbucks coffee in the AM (sold out quickly...one woman came back for a dozen scones), lemonade, bottled water and "frozen" brownies (I baked three kinds, froze and kept on ice in a cooler) in the afternoon. Word spread, because we had many folks pull up asking for the goodies.

Good luck!

I usually sell bottled water, sprite, and koolaid bursts/juice packs when we have yard sales at my mamas. I usually don't break even though b/c the kids drinking them & giving to neighborhood friends :). I do buy what we like though so whatever is left we'll drink anyways.
