Folding Cane with Seat

My momma was 80 at our last visit four years ago. After 3 days we decided to rent an EVC. Best decision ever! This year we are renting right form the get go. She has never used any type of devise since then for mobility. Disney is a horse of a different color.

You may already know this, but for others considering renting an EVC for multiple days, it is
cheaper and more convenient to rent from an offsite vendor like Walker Mobility or Apple scooters. They deliver right to your resort. More info can be found on the disabilities forum, here on the DIS.

We are visiting Disney in December for the first time and are traveling with my 80-year-old mother-in-law who may need rest from standing in long lines or waiting for story tellers. My daughter read about folding canes with seats. Although I have read that you can bring canes on most rides, Disney lists that you cannot bring folding chairs into the parks. Would it be alright since it is on a cane? Does anyone have experience bringing canes on rides, especially this kind of cane?

The cane seat would not be practical in a queue - most queues are moving, albeit very slowly. Also, WDW does not allow folding seats (although some people sneak them in somehow) as you could probably imagine how dangerous it would be for everyone if guests could just plunk down a seat and wait for a parade, etc. If there was a need to evacuate, it would be an immense obstacle course.

The cane would be allowed (with the seat) as it is a mobility device when used as a cane. When used as a seat, it is no longer a mobility device. A rollator is different, as you can sit on the seat and still move. Not very easily, but it can be done. I think a wheelchair or ECV would be better for your MIL.

I got myself one of those cane seats.... thoughts...
  • it's not stable if you do any leaning. I have great concerns if it's to be used by a senior
  • do not use the handle as a back rest... proper technique is to have the handle in front of you to prevent the seat from tipping over.
  • having the handle in front of you may not be polite for a woman

If not a rollator.... I like a transport wheelchair. Very handy when trying to look for a washroom and the senior is too slow to walk.

I would be concerned about someone bumping into the back leg that sticks out. And honestly, most of the planters that double as seating look more comfortable than that.

We took my mother, when she was 80. She lived alone, drove herself and was a super busy senior. BUT , Disney walking is different. She had never used a cane, scooter or anything at home, but we convinced her to get a scooter for Disney. She loved it! We rented from Walker. Amazing how much walking occurs before you even step foot in a park.

My mom, who is 86, is going with me this December. She has no mobility issues at home, but she decided on her own that she'd need an EVC. I'm glad she made the decision to use one so I didn't have to suggest it to her. I know we'll both be glad she has one. Shoot, there are time I'd like one myself at the end of a long day. :D
