My daughter (4) was terrified of the loud noises the fireworks made on our last Disney trip. However, she thinks they’re beautiful but they hurt her ears. We are going to WDW in November and I would love to find a solution for her so that she can enjoy the fireworks. On our last trip our room had a view of the Epcot fireworks and that was still too much, although not as bad! 🥹

I was curious if other parents had a similar situation and if you used noise canceling headphones/earmuffs and if that helped. Or if you have other suggestions.

I'm an adult and I use noise reduction headphones. My original ones were Winchester brand but these ones I use now I forget. Generally they are marketed for gun range. The winchester ones had batteries in them where I could turn a knob and hear conversations more clearly but eventually one side stopped working. Those are heavier and bulkier so the second ones I bought are much more compact. The winchester were 25 decibel reduction the newer ones 22. This means it reduces the noise by 25 and 22 decibels respectively.

I needed headphones that encompass my whole ear to give me the seal I needed. Without these headphones it's really unenjoyable and does hurt my ears. They just go in our park bag and I pull them out when necessary.

I've gotten both of mine at Walmart in the hunting/outdoors area but if you have a Bass Pro/Cabela's in your area they'll be there too up in the hunting/firearm section.

They have ones specifically marketed towards children (often smaller in size to accommodate children) and I've def. seen ones for young kids your child's age. You also probably have seen them in the parks every now and then. Truly kids should always be wearing those when it comes to fireworks to preserve as much hearing as possible.

It might be trial and error finding ones that fit comfortably for her but hopefully they help. Just know I know exactly how she feels!

We bought ours on amazon, he used them for a few years(ear muff type). I would just make sure they have some sort of NRR rating, ours was a NRR of 22. He had no problems on any rides or shows that had loud noises. We wanted something that blocked the loud noises but not enough that he couldn't hear us if we needed to say something to him(4yo at the time). The first pair we bought the NRR was over 30 and they were rather excessive for what we were trying to do. You couldn't hear anything thru those.

He still likes them on certain rides like the beginning part of big thunder mounting going up the track but he's not as sensitive as he once was. We use the ear plug type now that he can put in himself(8yo now).

Thank you for the information! You are right, kids should be wearing ear protection during the fireworks. Adults too!! For some reason this never crossed my mind with all of the organizing and packing. We will definitely get some headphones for her and ear plugs for us next time.

I never got mine until I was an adult. I should have been given them as a kid just due to how sensitive my ears were. It was such a game changer for me with them, I went from hating 4th of July to asking where we were going to watch the fireworks, I went from wanting to watch the fireworks at Disney but struggling with holding my ears closed and just how uncomfortable it was expecting the next big boom. But I struggled for many years just watching a movie in a theater due to how loud it was for me so I know I am more sensitive than others may be on the loudness factor.

I don't know if these products were as common 30 years ago though when I was your kid's age though so it's understandable. But these days they sure have expanded the options!

Sorry, but this made me laugh. We were watching the show at EPCOT, probably around 2000 or so. My daughter would have been 4. My wife really gets startled by loud bangs. Some of those loud concussion booms went of and really scared my wife. My daughter looked up at her and said, "Don't be scared mommy, it's only fireworks".
After many years of having a siren screaming right over my head and no ear protection, I have irreparable hearing loss. Never thought about fireworks. Good idea to use something. Once it's gone it's gone.

My kids and I use the cheap, foam earplugs you can buy at any store: Walgreens, Target, Etc. I help them put them in because you have to compress, then get them into the ear canal quickly before they puff up again. It takes the edge off for us!

My 4 year old uses these when she's around loud noises. They are a bit cumbersome to get on her head because they really are a snug fit around the ears. But she requests to wear them so they must not bother her much.
