Inspired by the wonderful Holiday Homemade Presents thread, I thought I'd create a thread about a fun and economical (I think) way to decorate for the fall/Halloween ... Using candy corn (And flowers, vases, candles, etc.).

I've always found candy corn to be one of the more affordable Autumn/Halloween candies. For the past few years now, I've been making Candy Corn Vases (Similar to the Candy Cane Vases I make during the holidays). It's based on the "Vase within a vase" idea: The "outside" vase is filled with candy corn and the "inside" vase is filled with flowers (real or artifical) in corresponding colors. Or you can fill the inside vase with a candle.

I will be creating this year's vases within the next two weeks and I'll post pictures. In the meantime, here are some pictures from Google Images to give you the general idea.

I love this look - but would be afraid it would attract bugs. Do you treat the candy in any way 1st? ( maybe a clear coat of spray paint?)
Great idea though, I really do love the way it looks!

that's really cute !! :thumbsup2 I think I might have to do that though....it would be cute w/ a candle in place of the flowers too.....

at Christmas I do the same kind of thing w/ cranberries in the vase then use white flowers w/ greens. It looks so gorgeous and so dressy.

I've seen some other really cute ideas out in blogland and magazines using candy corn.

1. A candy corn garland - string it like popcorn but go through the middle of a color rather than where two colors meet as the candy is more likely to break there. (Wouldn't this be cute with fall mix too?)

2. Also a candy corn wreath where they were hot glued to a wreath form.

3. Topiaries too - same as wreath.

If you make the wreath or topiary I would perhaps hit them with a coat of polyurethane. And wrap really tight if you plan to use it again next year. Garland I would throw out after the season and make fresh every year. The vase within a vase I would leave as is and just toss the candy after the holiday is over. I don't think there would be any need to spray them unless you really have a bug problem anyway.

Very cute...I especially like the votive candle idea. My fear would be that I would EAT the candy :lmao:

I have done the candle idea for Easter and my guest was eating the eggs out of it. Only Dave:rotfl:

Reminds me I need to decorate, he is coming up this weekend.;)

I love the candy corn garland, wreath and topiary idea! I agree with you about coating them (wreath and topiary) with polyurethane. As for the candy corn vases, I just dump out the remaining candy after Halloween. I've never had a problems with bugs ... So far.

I've never treated the candy in the past. After Halloween, I just dump it. I haven't had a problem with bugs so far. The only problem is everyone (me included) picking candy from the vase when they walk by! :)

LOL, candy corn is one of my FAVORITES!!!!

and I'm probably just a bit paranoid, I battled with ants over the summer, and although I am victorious, it was a harsh battle!
(it rained a LOT, and the rain forces the ants out of the ground....apparently, right into my livingroom! )

OMG, I wouldn't have thought of doing that. Going to have to bug DF to take me to Target to get some candy corn, vases, & get some flowers on the way home to make it. Thanks for sharing.

Silly question, but what's keeping the flowers alive? Is there a smaller vase w/water buried inside the candy corn?

Oh that is so cute!!!!!! I really want to do that but I couldn't bear throwing the candy out, candy corn is my favorite......lol

I have a very large hurricane vase that I am always looking for things to put in it to change with the seasons. Last year I did candy corn with a big white candle in the center. Then for Christmas I put epsom salt (because it's sparkly and looks kinda snowy) and a cranberry colored candle in the center. Just this afternoon I had my kids picking acorns up off the ground in our yard and am going to fill the hurricane with those.

I love the flowers in the vase-in-a-vase idea. Very cute!!! My friend goes after Halloween and gets a pie pumpkin and saves it for Thanksgiving. She makes a hole in the center, puts a cup in it and then fills the cup with flowers and water. So it makes like a vase. Cute centerpiece!

Yes, there is a smaller vase inside holding the flowers and water. It's a vase within a vase. The "outside", larger vase holds the candy.
