I think it's great that ordinary people can create content and earn money for it! But my question is, if I "Like" a video does it help that person earn more money than if I just watch it? How about if I watch the ads vs skipping them, does that matter? I wouldn't mind watching a couple 15 second ads to support someone. Thanks!

To make money on YouTube, a channel needs to be part of the YouTube Partner Program. To join this progam, a channel needs to have
  1. more than 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months
  2. more than 1,000 subscribers
When you LIKE a video, it does not count directly to that person earning money, but it counts indirectly, as every time a video is LIKED, causes a ripple and gets more people to watch a video. Its the watch time of a video that earns money.

When you skip ads, the YouTube person does not earn money.

If you are watching a YouTube Channel which has over 1000 subscribers, its very likely they are trying to earn money. To help them earn money, you need to watch their videos and not skip any of the ads.

If you are watching a YouTube Channel which has under 1000 subscribers and they are asking people to subscriber on every video, its very likely they are trying to get to 1,000 subscribers in order to join YouTube Partner Program and earn money. To help them earn money, you need to watch their videos, subscribe to their channel and Like their videos, so that more people will watch their videos.

According to this link, a YouTuber does not get money if you skip an ad before 30 seconds

https://alanspicer.com/do-youtubers..., a viewer can skip,is earned by the YouTuber

But it should be noted that payment is usually per 1,000 views. So if you personally don't skip an ad, you are giving the advertiser your time and attention and giving the YouTube like... a few cents? If you really want to support a specific YouTuber, become a patron if he have Patreon, or a member if they participate in the YouTube Membership program.

I often wonder at what point the ads reach some kind of saturation level since there is a finite amount of $$$ companies budget for advertising and more internet content keeps popping up. Many people probably just ignore or tune out ads. I would assume companies now spend less on TV and more on ads that are internet based, so they are shifting around where their ad dollars are spent. I never watch something just to help someone else earn money. Whether any of that results in more people actually buying the product being advertised is likely very hard to measure.

I was watching a prominent YouTuber's (someone with 2.8M subscribers) video the other day, and he said you need to watch more than 5 seconds of the video and then you can skip it, and he would still earn money. I don't know if there's any way to confirm that, though...

The user expresses appreciation for the opportunity for ordinary individuals to create content and earn money from it. They have a question regarding the impact of their engagement on a video creator's earnings. Specifically, they wonder if liking a video contributes more to a creator's earnings compared to simply watching it. They also inquire about the significance of watching ads versus skipping them, as they are willing to watch short ads to support content creators. They conclude by expressing their willingness to support creators through ad viewing.

In response to their query, it's important to note that the exact workings of revenue generation on online platforms may vary. However, generally speaking, liking a video can indirectly contribute to a creator's earnings by enhancing the video's visibility and potentially increasing its reach to a wider audience. On the other hand, directly watching ads without skipping them often generates ad revenue for creators, as they typically receive compensation based on ad views or clicks.

It's commendable that the user is willing to watch ads to support content creators. This kind of support can be beneficial, as ad revenue plays a significant role in sustaining and motivating creators to continue producing content.

I'm curious how ad revenue works for the YouTuber if you the viewer have a YouTube paid account which removes ads?

Isn't 1K also the number of subscribers needed to get one of those shiny YouTube play button plaques?

My young dog likes the tv on. She behaves when the tv is in when we are not home. So I turn on you tube. Tv is going to be on anyway let people make a little money. I don’t come close to my data limit so not worried about that.
For any cat people out there, there are certain channels with long feeds featuring birds and such that will drive cats freakin' bonkers.

I heard something about the viewer has to watch a bit more than that. And I know content creators will always say "please watch to the end!". This sometimes results in lots of click-bait videos: all filler with the real content packed in the final minutes.

Youtubers can also view their own analytics to see how they're doing on specific videos too. It's weird we've come to a time when seemingly "nobodies" are now checking their own version of Nielsen ratings.

These AI bots are starting to get a bit weird.
Doh, I didn't catch this was a zombie thread. But that post previous to yours does resemble a bot!

Excuse me, Alvadua, can you complete the following, please?

Yea, I thought the same thing. The grammar/syntax seems awfully clumsy, overly technical and/or someone who isn't good at speaking English wrote that. And who writes in the 3rd person? Like when I first read it was thinking..............what's your point???...............LOL. Reads more like something a robot would say !!!
