Are Dole Whips seriously lactose free? I have been to WDW 20+ times and have always quickly walked past the Dole whip station because I am lactose intolerant and desperately want to try one. We are headed to WDW in 2 days, if they are truly lactose free I am going to be in heaven!! :cool1::yay::woohoo:

depends on who, where and flavor you are talking about. I work at a small nonDisney park in Pa, our book says all flavors have dairy in them, others say pineapple or orange do not have dairy. also depends on how mixture is made there can be cross mixed. I know not much help

I"m not sure it ever had actual lactose in it. Even back in '07 when we first encountered the ingredients (then it had corn syrup solids, which make my son temporarily insane and very violent but those are gone, though it still has dextrose in it which has its own set of issues for us) it didn't have lactose.

Rather, it had sodium caseinate. Which now is gone in at least the pineapple flavor.

Ingredient list here: http://www.precisionfoods.com/foodservice/product_detail.cfm?wpCatId=52568&skuId=2324876

Apparently sodium caseinate can still trigger very very sensitive lactose allergic people, and I read one thing just now that said it's what a truly "dairy allergic" person (not lactose intolerant) person reacts to. So you might not have ever been able to eat the Dole Whip.

But it was caseinate, not lactose, that was in them before (as far back as I've been looking at the ingredients every so often).

There is of course the potential for cross contamination with the vanilla; and, ingredients can change; so you would have to confirm at the actual location.

That said, according to the manufacturer's webpage for PINEAPPLE DOLE WHIP:

Are you looking for lactose free or dairy free (the two being very different)?

We need to stick with dairy free for DD (milk proteins and milk sugars) and not just lactose free (milk sugars). She can have the pineapple and the orange but not the vanilla. If you simply need to be lactose free then the vanilla might be ok because it doesn't contain milk or lactose but it does contain casein (milk protein). I think that I good way to measure that is if you can have lactose free milk or take lactose pills and consume dairy with no problem because the lactose free milk will still contain the casein. For example, if you have to read margarine containers very carefully and can only have a vegan margarine (since most margarines contain casein) then your issues extend beyond lactose intolerance.

I too am lactose intolerant and I have no problem with pineapple dole whips.

BTW- Have you tried the Lactaid tablets? They come individually packaged so are easy to carry around. I always have a couple in my pocket. :thumbsup2

Thank you all so much for the great info!! I can't believe I've gone this long without! I'm so excited to have my very first Dole Whip on Friday!! Do you recommend the sundae or just the whip? :thanks:

Thank you, yes I carry Lactaid tablets with me everywhere I go, but it only helps with some things for me and sadly ice cream is not one of them
So excited to finally have a dole whip :cool1:
