This probably isn't the most wholesome question to ask, but I'm wondering if DCL screens your blood and urine during your pre - employment medical exam.
I have seen the medical certificate sheet which mentions nothing about whether or not the use of drugs could be found in the potential employees system. I was also under the (naive) notion that it is against the law to drug test without the person's consent. The only drug testing I have been made aware of is once you actually set foot on the boat.

Again, I know this probably looks TERRIBLE, but any thoughts or experiences with this would help me out a lot.

Thank you for your time!

Honestly, If its a problem for you, you probably shouldn't be applying. I cannot imagine any employer in this day and age not asking for a pre- employment drug screen. I imagine it wouldn't be part of the medical exam. Most places it isn't, its done separately.

Broadly speaking, pre-employment drug testing requires consent due to, at the very least, a law called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). If passing a drug test is a contingency for your employment, they will likely advise you of that. Most companies do not require the drug test until after a person is offered the job, but before you actually start employment. It's usually done in conjunction with a criminal background screen.

Otherwise, however, you're probably on the wrong board to ask questions like these. I am sure there are places you can find out more information, but here you're not likely to get a lot of help (to say the least).

It's not a problem for me, I'm not a criminal or anything like that but I will admit I OCCASIONALLY smoke. Thank you for your time.

I was under the impression that some sort of consent was required having been drug tested in the work place before. Would you happen to know of somewhere I could go for a better time finding an answer? I appreciate your time :)

Not implying you were. I am saying if passing a drug screen is a problem, then you shouldn't apply. You definitely don't want to get caught with that on ship. It isn't a job for you if you choose to indulge, period.

The PP is right, it requires consent, and it is almost always in the initial offer of employment that you sign. If not , it will be a separate from, likely given to you at the time you are asked to test.

Right now I am subbing for teachers in the Walker County School System in Georgia and no drug test was given to me. Background check that I foot the bill for, but no drug test.

Upon receiving my offer I did stop as this job is the most important thing in my life right now.

My thoughts exactly - they made it clear I would be tested but only once I stepped foot on board. I appreciate your knowledge!

I think with the job market being so hot now, employees are coming and going in droves. This may be to expensive for many employers.

That shouldn't have happened. All education employees should be drug tested. Likely slipped through the cracks because it had to be done quickly.

I didn't slip, they are not testing anyone. I ask another lady that was starting to sub. Its $$$.

I guess I am just old. I don't get why you would risk it if you are even thinking of having a gainful career somewhere. It can literally ruin your chances of being employed, particularly if you live in a state where it is still illegal. That conviction will stay with you.

For real.

Understandable. I am a legal user, of age, in a legal state - as this it is not legal nation wide, I can respect that and thus this post. I have been working hard since an early age for this opportunity and have made my personal choices to ensure nothing but my own success. Thanks.
