I know people who never go away on a vacation. Or take one maybe every 10 years and then it's for an extended weekend.

How can people not want to get away? I would go crazy if I couldn't get away from it all every once in awhile.

I'm not talking about people who are just starting their careers, and can't, or people who budget wise, can't afford it. That I can understand.

These are people who are well-off financially, and yet, they don't go anywhere, ever.

There is so much to see and do in this world, how can you not want to?

Is it because they were raised that way? Thinking that taking a vacation is a waste of time or money? :confused3

All I know is, if I ever hit the lottery, the first thing I would do is take off for 2 years and travel the world! :goodvibes

I had a manager like that. He didn't take much time off, which was fine, but he also thought that since he didn't take his vacation days that I shouldn't either. One year I put in my vacation request six months in advance, got it approved, and made all my travel plans. About two weeks before the trip he asks me "So what is your Plan B?" What the...? "You know, in case we just get too busy for you to go." I told him that there was no Plan B and that I was going and he would just have to fire me. The real boss, the guy who owned the company, told me there was no problem with my time or with our department workload and that my manager was just having control issues. He definitely lightened up over time - especially after he got married and adopted his daughter.

Our neighbors are like that. They just put in a new deck and hot tub and she was saying how much $$$ it set them back. Then her daughter spoke up and said that they never go anywhere so that is their vacation. I guess it is good for me...I will always have someone to watch my dog for me!

We don't go every year but there are times when I need to get away.

A coworker of mine. She and her twin sister have never been married, have always lived with their mom, who passed away last year), and save every bit of money they have. She hasn't missed a day of work in 25 years. She says she doesn't understand why people would want to go away on vacation and leave the comforts of home.

I have a friend who plans her life for vacations. Her vacation plans are set for two, three, five years out. And she puts away money just for vacation every month.

We, on the other hand, rarely ever vacation. When we do, we usually go to WDW. We do go places that we can drive for a few days, or we go and visit the in-laws. But just planning a week-long vacation is not one of those things we do.

The funny thing is that we can go somewhere on a spur-of-the-moment trip for little or nothing. DH's company will allow us to fly free by private jet, and they let him keep his hotel points...so we have about 8-10 days built up right now. The problem is that we can't plan in advance...which just kills my DH.

He is also retired military, so we can get on a military plane and fly anywhere in the world free on a military hop...but we can't plan those trips far in advance either.

DH is a pilot and is gone 15 days every month, so what he really wants is a large home that serves as his vacation place from work. If we ever start building it, we'll probably never vacation again!

My best friends never went on vacation anywhere, not even away for a weekend. Their Dad would not spend the money or leave the immediate area. I'm not even sure they went to the local amusement parks. The only thing I remember them doing was going to the county fair once a year.

Now, when my girlfriend got married they went all over the place, they were always going off on vacations...I guess making up for lost time!

The parents took their first vacation ever once she was married...so after the parents 25th wedding anniversary...and they went to WDW! Mom had a great time, Dad said it was ok, but it was years before they went away again and that was to Vegas. Once the oldest brother moved to California they started to travel there to visit, but never went on another "vacation" vacation again.

I have 2 coworkers that NEVER take vacations or time off. They have both worked there for 25-30 years. I've worked with them for almost 10. One of them is married with 3 children. He has taken maybe 2-3 long weekends since I've worked there. And by long I mean maybe 3 days, as he usually works Saturdays. He works 50-60 hours per week, even when we dont need him to. For vacation, they drive across state. I'm 99% sure his children (14,16,17) have never been on an airplane. I've been encouraging him to take them to Disneyland. For almost 10 years he's been saying he was waiting for them to get big enough.

The other guy has been married and has kids. But, since I've worked there has just lived with is girl friend. They dont travel at all. He never takes long weekends. He also works about 50 hours most weeks.

They both use their vacation time to boost their checks (ask for pay without taking time off). Both claim we dont let them have time off, however, they NEVER ask. Both make good wages so I dont think its a money/ budget issue.

Of course they both tease me beacuse we go to DL once a year.

Growing up, my family never took vacations. I remember only two times that my family went anywhere and we only made those two trips because my dad had business in those cities.

Since we moved to Florida, DD and I have not taken a vacation. We always seem to be busy and just haven't gotten around to making plans.

My mother and stepfather NEVER go anywhere. They are financially able, just choose not to. They would rather work on their house, garden, etc, etc...It is what makes them happy..

They take their time off work.

Me, NO way  ..I love to travel, and do so a few times a year...We look forward to it as a family..:)

I know some people who are homebodies. To them a vacation is not having to leave their home. Works for them.

Our neighbor grew up dreading family vacations. She said she was miserable from the second they piled into the car so now they go nowhere, ever.

MY PARENTS never went on vacation anywhere! And neither did I, until I was 10 (friends families always took me everywhere)....and then at 15 I started going on vacations without "grownups":woohoo: and there is noooooooo stopping me.

My sisters never go on vacation either:confused3 One sister went from NY to CA yeeeeeeears ago. She had to pee so bad, but was afraid to use the john on the plane. So she had a bad infection....and never went on vacation again!:lmao: And my other sister once took her daughter in '85 to WDW and STILL has not stopped complaining about it!:headache:

My Fathers last vacation was their Honeymoon 57 years ago....and that was only for a night! He says he saw everything there is too see in the Navy! I KNOW he is just CHEAP!;)

When I was older I took Mom on vacation to a couple of places, including WDW...and she too complained 'bout EVVVVVVVVVVVERYTHING everywhere we went!:headache:

Some people (hum drum people...)are just best at home!:thumbsup2

OMG, can I give you a qualified YES!?!?!

My in-laws, until February of this year, had never been on a vacation together since their honeymoon in 1975!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not kidding!!!!! No family vacations with their 3 kids (including my dh), nothing! They did take day trips to Cape Cod and/or the local private beach they have access to...and dh says once they went to Connecticut for the day, but he can't remember what for.:confused3 MIL also went to California to visit friends when she was pregnant with my dh...who is now 28 years old!!:scared1: That's the last time either of them went anyplace. My jaw still hangs open when I think about thirty years of NO vacations! So, FIL won an all-expenses-paid trip for 2 to Las Vegas at his company's Christmas party in December, and off they went, just a few short months ago...it was a miracle! Until the very last minute, all of us were convinced MIL would back out. Even HER mother said, "I'll bet you Cathy doesn't go at the last minute." These people have a good income and all of their children are grown now (youngest is 22 and in college), so they really don't have any excuse other than not wanting to go. MIL has now caught the travel bug, and keeps mentioning other places she would like to go...but we'll see if any of it comes to fruition. We've invited her to WDW three times, but she always says it's too hot, too expensive, too far away, etc. We don't know if she'll ever make it to WDW soil, but she is welcome to tag along for a few days if she wants to give it a go!

As a side note, dh hates the fact that he never went on any family vacations as a kid. Consequently, our two year old has been on FIVE of them already and will be going on his sixth (back to WDW) in September. Our income is 1/4 that of MIL and FIL, but we find a way to afford it, because it's important to us. BIL and SIL also travel as much as they are able. Guess they hated never going anywhere, too. As for FIL and MIL, they seem to be all about the excuses, but maybe that will change now that they've had a taste of travel!:wizard:

My parents- they think it's a waste of money. They haven't taken a vacation in years. The only family vacation when I was young was when I was 15 yrs old. My parents and I went to Niagra Falls/ Toronto, Canada for 3 days total. That included driving there and back from the Chicago area.
The thing is, my parents complain to me why my family(I, DH, DD, and DS) has to go so far on vacation? Why we can't just stay around the Chicago area every yr? Last yr, my family stayed in Chicago area for vacation. 2 yrs ago, we were at the Dells. I still think my parents feel it's a waste of money to travel farther than 50 miles somewhere.

My boyfriend is like that. I think he's only been on like 1 vacation in his life. I love to vacation though. I'd vacation permanently if I could. :rotfl: I'm trying to get him to "see the light," but it isn't working so far. ;)

My childhood was spent taking a lot of vacations and I'm glad for that. As a result I love to travel. DH came from a family who rarely took vacations and MIL and FIL still don't. Since DH and I married he has seen the "joys" of traveling and loves it as well as do DD and DS. I have family members and coworkers who NEVER go anywhere and I mean NEVER. When they take a week of vacation they stay home, which is fine, but not for me. If I just want to stay home I may take a long weekend, but if I'm going to take a week or more off I'm going some where! Last year we alone we took 4 trips/vacations: Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri (just DH and I), Schlitterbahn's twice, and Disney for Thanksgiving. This year our only trip will be our August trip to Disney World and it's killing us that that is our only trip. But due to some shifts of power at my work and DH new traveling job we just don't have time for anything more this year.

We even want to move in the next couple of years to an area (southern Georgia) where we will be within driving time of more trips (day trips or long weekend trips) to the beaches or Disney or other places.

PS My parents are still always going places. At least monthly they are gone somewhere.

I'm sure DH's brother never goes on vacation. I think he just stays in his apt when he takes vacation days. I've never heard him say that he goes anywhere. We can barely get him to come to our house for Christmas (and we're only an hour's drive apart.

This year we do not have the money to take a vacation and I am so upset.:sad1:
