Rare photos of Walt Disney go up for auction

Rare and never-before-seen photos of Walt Disney are heading to the auction block this March.

The rare collection includes candid photos of Walt Disney in the early 1920s, with some featuring handwritten notes.

The images depict personal moments, such as Disney on his honeymoon and rare family photos of Walt and Roy Disney using their first movie camera in the front yard of their uncle’s house in Los Angeles—where the Disney Studio was born.

The photographs were initially mailed to Walt Disney’s friend, legendary composer Carl Stalling, who later helped inspire the creation of Disney’s Silly Symphonies film series.

The rare photo collection comes from the estate of animation legend Bob Clampett, who worked for Warner Bros. and was a close friend of Stalling.

If nothing else, it gave us the “Snow White Trailer Comments as a song” videos and they were hilarious.
The initial photos of live actors playing the dwarves caused so much negative comments, that they were changed to CGI. Probably why the budget is so high, whole scenes needing to be refilmed. As someone who has loved seeing the legacy animated films and the big second golden age, this film worries me that it could be such a disaster that it causes short circuiting future projects.

A $53M estimated opening isn't dire for Snow White.

The reported production budget is, however, $250M. Not sure of the P&A budget for this movie.
I’m hoping it’ll end up being lower than that, thanks to the pre-release discourse. It just depends on the reviews when they come out.

If the live-action Snow White does fail at the box office, it would most likely cause Disney to put an end to making live-action remakes of their animated classics, which is what everyone is hoping they would stop doing.

Amen. Although I’d be fine if they wanted to do them only for direct to D+ instead, just not as theatrical releases at the expense of new features.

So we were over visiting my older brother and sister-in-law earlier today, and she had been doing some housecleaning. Her two are like 15 and 20 years younger than me (60 and 54) - so obviously they got into my comics stash at their grandmother's and absconded with some of my collection many, many years ago.

This is what she found, and now I have them back:

How lucky and fun for you! Congrats. I bet they'll be super fun reading now.

Back during during the 80s, 90s, and early 00s, Bruce Hamilton got the license to reprint Disney comics, and I got a fairly complete collection of his stuff. But you are right, there's nothing like the original Dell 10 cent comics - back when 10 cents was REAL money!

At least we are getting a shortform special inspired by The Princess and the Frog, per the above article, even if it’s separate from the now-scrapped show.

But now, it feels like Tiana's Bayou Adventure has become a wasted opportunity, since the Tiana show was supposed to tie-in with the ride. With this and them getting rid of "Reimagine Tomorrow", Disney might as well revert the ride back to Splash Mountain, whether some, if not most, people like it or not. They can even make new animatronics and set pieces when reverting TBA back to SM.

While I agree that the Tiana show being cancelled does weaken Tiana's Bayou Adventure as a whole....Disney is never going to bring Splash back. That ship (or log) has sailed a long time ago.

They could always pull a Moana and turn it into a movie. I don't know if much actual production was done, but I could see it.

Allegedly according to people who had knowledge of the Tiana show's production, not much was actually completed during its 5 year development cycle. They're essentially starting from scratch with the Princess and the Frog special that was announced right after the cancellation.

Everything I've seen on it has said they plan on doing a short instead, which I'm fine with. I think getting mad about this wrt the ride is silly and the kind of bad faith nonsense that too often dominates discussions of TBA. Splash is not coming back (thank god!). It's been time to move on.

Personally I'm not upset about the show getting canceled. WDAS spreading themselves thin with streaming content has clearly not helped anything quality wise, and I'd rather no Tiana show than a mediocre one. Besides, we're now on year 3 of them losing Best Animated Feature and this time to a tiny indie studio who made the winner in freaking Blender. (Which, btw: if you haven't seen Flow, it's streaming on Max and the Oscar was well deserved!!) They need to get back to basics, get some new blood in, and focus on theatrical imo. Moana 2 had the bones of something decent and was entertaining enough but very much felt like it was cobbled together from tv show scraps. I don't want that to be the blueprint going forward.
