CinemaCon update.

TWDC is going to need a lot of box office bonanzas Q3 due to a very bad Q2 (Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White). Reportedly, the combined production budgets for both movies are $600M-$650M (+/-) and excludes P&A costs.

Budget news below for those who wish to have linked information. And, now the Tangled live action movie is in jeopardy.

Not a Disney movie, but maybe the Minecraft movie can juice the box office for other movies. Coming off 2 consecutive box office bombs, WB (like TWDC) needs a win. It landed a record win last night.

Wonder if this thing can build itself a $100M domestic box office this weekend?

It's definitely not my cup of tea, but the cinema world needs something. I hope a lot of people see it and enjoy it.

One of those bad movies that still has an audience to go see it type of deals
Definitely has a huge audience. I'm not a gamer. My DS is. He told me that Minecraft has around 200M monthly players. That's a terrific audience base.

As for the movie being bad...I wasn't expecting WB to give the kids Shakespeare. To be fair, I don't expect TWDC to give kids Shakespeare with Lilo and Stitch either.

There’s plenty of bad family movies that make money. Not a knock on its performance, just a subjective opinion of the movie itself.

Lion King live action is a soulless remake that made over $1B. Heck you could probably list most of Disney’s live action remakes that performed well on this list.

Mario is messy plot wise, but has all the nostalgia fueled member berries and rakes in over $1B.

I find it interesting that Minecraft was made with a budget of $150,000,000. Disney is always saying the CGI is what runs up their movie budgets. The Minecraft movie is mostly CGI. Why is it the WB can make the movie for a million less than TWDC made Snow White? I feel like TWDC needs to get a handle on how much they pay for CGI. Even worse, Disney's CGI usually doesn't even look convincing.

Looks to be a significant box office.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ On Building Spree As It Heads To $260M+ Worldwide Bow – International Box Office

By Nancy Tartaglione - International Box Office Editor/Senior Contributor @DeadlineNancy April 5, 2025 - 11:22am PDT

SATURDAY UPDATE: With increasing grosses in the cart, Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is on track to mine an opening weekend of $260 million+ worldwide.

The Jason MomoaJack Black starrer is at $52.7M from the international box office through Friday in 75 overseas markets. That portends an offshore debut in the $125M range. Combined with the domestic mania, it brings us to at least $260M global through Sunday.

I took my kids to Minecraft last night and (IMO) it is a terrible movie. Lol. Complete drivel. But kids will like/love it bc it is Minecraft.

I am guessing we will get several sequels.

Easier to run up the bill when your previous movies have made a lot of money. There’s a quote I saw recently about movie budgets and I’m going to paraphrase it poorly but the gist of it is that you can’t overspend on a movie that costs $10 mil bc there’s a lot more stress about keeping the budget under control. Once you hit $200 mil? People aren’t paying as much attention. You’re getting closer and closer to having a blank check. You don't necessarily know where the money is going. You can overcharge more. And you're not going to find many occasions where filmmakers go back and say "please give us a smaller budget this time, we don't need all this money".

With that in mind, guessing Minecraft 2 will most likely cost significantly more than $150 mil. And $150 mil isn’t that cheap to begin with!

Snow White had also been in production since 2020 vs 2022 for the Minecraft movie, and had its budget approved before the shifts post Covid. Lilo and Stitch at the moment is reported to be in the $150M range.

IP fueled nostalgia sells well at the Box Office. Storytelling need not apply.

I am not the target demo for Minecraft Movie. I am not buying a ticket to Minecraft Movie. There is a substantial likelihood I will n stream Minecraft Movie, when available.

But, based upon some of the social media I observed over the weekend, a lot of people were having a good time at the Minecraft Movie. And, isn't that great! There are people showing up in droves to enjoy a movie at the theaters. For me, having a good time really important.

I pray that movie studios, like TWDC, keep that in mind. I truly hope that Lilo & Stitch offers a similar level of enjoyment and fun to theater goers, because Thunderbolts* promotions and marketing haven't struck me in that way. In fact, the box office forecast for Thunderbolts* looks dicey. Not dire, just dicey.

Thank you for confirming that story need not matter for a good time to be had. Meta references like Chicken Jockey, Technoblade, “I Am Steve”, YouTubers being cast in a film, etc .. sell incredibly well.

As long as Disney gives a near shot for shot remake of Lilo and Stitch and matches the vibe of the original it will probably do well. No need to change anything really.

HTTYD will also probably do well as a basically shot for shot adaptation of the original.

There are good movies and there are fan service movies. Sometimes movies are both. I barely know anything about Minecraft but I know it's been extremely popular and I guess it still is.

Wonder if Disney is having discussions with Epic (Fortnite) about taking that to the movies.

I'm not a movie-maker, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

But for the last 20 years of my working life, I was a salesman, and was reasonably successful. You learn a couple of things real quick: where the money is and which customers are ready to spend it. To have any success at this, you must listen to your customers.

I would suggest to anyone about to make a movie, that you look at movies that were successful in the past and learn why folks went to see them.

Without customers, you have no business. None. You only exist to satisfy a need or a want that someone is willing to pay for.
