But my point is that people weren't (couldn't have been) familiar with those IPs until Inside Out and Moana were first created. How does that square with your statement that "people clamour for original works, but then they don't go see them"? Disney wouldn't have made sequels if the originals had bombed.

They were more than 10 years ago. The movie-going climate was a bit different back then. Familiarity though ahs always been a boost for films, but now it seems that people are more risk-averse. It's not across the board, but definitely a trend.

It's too big a financial risk....

Spend the money on two tickets
Spend the money on popcorn and drinks
Spend the money on the babysitter

OR

Just wait 90 days, see it at home on your 85 inch tv screen or movie projector
with the food you want to eat
in a more comfortable chair
and after the kids go to bed

So... if going to the movies.... it better be worth the effort...

The entire Eisner business model of movies he created in the 80s for Disney wouldn't work today....

I hate to say this, but this is now me. Before 2020 I use to try and see a movie in a theater once a month. Since the start of 2020, I've seen zero movies in a theater, ok that is not 100% true, I did see Dr Strange 2 in the Buena Vista theater on the Wonder in 2022 on our Alaska cruise.

Call it old age or just not seeing the value of seeing something in a theater any longer. Between D+, Amazon Prime, Max, etc., I can wait the 60 to 90 days and watch it from home and not having to worry about people using their cell phones during the movie, fighting over seats, paying for over price concessions, etc. I just don't have the desire to go any longer.

You aren’t alone. Prior to 2020, annual ticket sales were over 1.2 Billion every year. Post 2020 the highest in the domestic market has been was 819 Million in 2023.

Ticket sales have been dropping since the early 2000s, but post 2020 has been a solid drop.

This is us too, especially as our lives have gotten busier and the kids are now young adults with their own lives. I am usually not in a rush to see anything opening up in a theater, not when I can see it in comfort from home

I am not seeing "regular" films in the theater much these days. But I have started going to special screenings of things at a local "historic" theater that is nearing it's 100th anniversary---complete with a pipe organ that is played before most screenings.

For example, they run a "White Christmas Sing-a-long" every year on Black Friday. They start with a half-hour of Christmas carols on the organ, followed by the film: Imagine a PG-rated version of one of the better versions of the Rocky Horror Picture Show audience-participation shows, and you get the idea.

Does that "creator content" include "The Amazing Digital Circus"? It’s gotten popular.
