Hi all -

I have what I think is a 5 qt round crockpot I've been using for some time now. I wanted an larger one and oval. The new programmable ones caught my eye. But after sending the hubby out to buy it, I am not having second thoughts as it is only about 1 qt larger, still can't go in oven with lid and the programming thing is really not a huge bonus.

Do any of you have roaster ovens? And if so, it looks like they can be quite large and do the same thing as a crockpot...is this true?

I have both and use them for different reasons.I use the crockpot for slow all day cooking. I use the roaster oven just as I would the regular oven only it does not heat the whole kitchen. Both of mine came with recipe booklets. Although I leave the slow cooker on all day while I am at work, the roaster over cooks faster and I don't leave home while it is on, the same as I would not if I had the oven on. Hope this helps :Pinkbounc

Sorry, I don't have a roaster oven, but I received 6 crockpots at my bridal shower! Five of them were all the same 6 qt black stainless programmable with a bag and cookbook, from walmart. The one I kept is 6.5 qt, white, programmable and has an extra insert divider in it, so I can make two things at once. I would highly recommend this one.

I received 2 crockpots for my wedding - and I use them both at the same time for different items (if I received 3 or 4 I'd not complain, it's nice being able to cook more than one dish at the same time).

I used them this past weekend to make beef vegetable soup and goulash. Yum!

Would you mind sharing your recipe for goulash? I love it but have not found a good crockpot recipe for it. TIA, Melissa

Well looks like ther aren't many roaster oven users around! Love my crockpot, just wish it were bigger and oval. I have Taco Soup cooking right now and boy does the house smell yummy! Can't wait to get the cornbread in the oven too....mmmmm!

I just forgot that I have a roaster oven. The only time my mother ever used it was during the holidays or when we were having a ton of company. She usually only cooked a turkey or ham in it. Mine has a three container divider that could be used to keep things warm during a party.

I have both and would recommend having one of each. I used the roaster for ham and beef and such.

When my oven dies, I'm getting a double oven and then I may only need the Roaster for big holidays. Still comes in handy for parties and things. I make meatballs in mine all the time.

I don't have a roaster oven, but I have to say that I am disappointed with my oval programmable Rival Crock Pot that I bought when my old one died. It seems to cook a lot faster than my old one. I don't know if it has to do with it being oval rather than round?

I have a Nesco roaster and use it as a crock pot at times. Works well for me, and I don;t have to have 2 different appliances. The book that came with it had a few recipes for slow cooking.

I have the same crockpot and noticed the same thing. It cooks much faster than my old model, which was also oval...so I don't think the shape has anything to so w/ it. I actually like that it cooks faster though, so that's not a problem for me.

I have it as well and love it. Best one I ever owned!

Ah, yes. The roaster oven. I fondly remember all big family gatherings growing up included at least one roaster oven. Bridal showers, baby showers, reunions, etc.... And my mom would pack hers with stuffed cabbages. Mmmmmm....

Of course, now she's doctored her recipe so much (to make it MUCH healthier) that they don't taste NEARLY as good as they once did.
