Introduction
Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe is a large eatery in the Tomorrowland area of Magic Kingdom. This restaurant is one of several Quick Service options at MK. I think that Cosmic Ray’s is an above average theme park restaurant with an interesting twist. Sarah and I visited during our July and November 2017 trips. During our November trip, we even tried to break Disney World’s dining system! For more info on that, check out the trip report link above!

Word on the Main Street is (see what I did there? :)) that this is the busiest restaurant in the world. Even though there is no certifiable way to confirm this constant rumor, I would not be surprised. This is a massive burger palace and it is almost always completely full. It is by far the busiest (and best) restaurant in Tomorrowland.

Atmosphere

Sonny Eclipse, the insanely talented demigod of song, takes up residence at Cosmic Ray’s year round. Anyone who has followed this restaurant closely understands that Sonny has a cult following. He puts in hard work at his work is rewarded!

The rest of Cosmic Ray’s is unremarkable. First, it is MASSIVE. There are three bays from which you can order. I haven’t personally observed this, but apparently the menu can include different things depending on your bay.

This restaurant also screams tomorrow (for people who were alive in the 70’s). This is Disney imagineering at its finest. The retro nods to the distant future make Cosmic Ray’s gel seamlessly into the Tomorrowland vibe.

Hot tip: if you are looking for a quiet meal, this is not the place for you. Between the hordes of people and Sonny’s performance, it is incredibly loud. If you are looking to talk to the person you came with, there is plenty of seating outside.

Food

The Disney World website classifies this restaurant as “American Cuisine”. The menus is about the stereotype of American cuisine. The classic knock against theme park food is that it consists of nothing other than burgers, hot dogs, and pizza. Though that is certifiably not true about Walt Disney World food, this does happen to be a burger restaurant. There are other options, but that is the majority of the menu.

The main draw and the source of value from this restaurant comes from the toppings bar. Nothing gets a WDW fan more excited than the words “toppings bar”. I am not sure that most people who religiously eat at Cosmic Ray’s or Pecos Bill’s Tall Tale Inn & Cafe care about very much more than a good toppings bar. It is here and it isn’t going anywhere!

During both our July 2017 and November 2017 trips, I ordered the Barbecued Pork Bacon Cheeseburger (because meat). I thought this was a good theme park hamburger. I really liked that there was enough protein to satisfy the most adamant carnivore. It was fresh during our November trip, so that was much more enjoyable.

Sarah diversified her eating experience. During our July trip, she ordered the Half Rotisserie Chicken which was really good. I am rarely disappointed with Walt Disney World chicken! It is usually cooked well and the flavor is good for theme park chicken. The meal also came with green beans and mashed potatoes, which were also good! The fact that I even admit that green beans are good is a huge win for Ray's. The second visit she ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger, which was weird because she doesn’t eat bacon. She wanted a burger and so I benefited by adding an extra layer of meat to my meat monstrosity!

Both times I ordered the Strawberry Lemonade Slushy because flavored lemonade is my jam. I also cannot get away from ordering the most expensive beverage on the menu while we are on the Dining Plan. Sarah is always boring and buys a bottle of water. Something about not wanting to die of dehydration while walking around in the hot Central Florida sun.

Cost

According to the Disney World website, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe is classified with “$” which means you should expect to pay roughly $14.99 and under, per adult. For the Disney Dining Plan users, this restaurant requires one Quick Service credit per meal. This is a good use of a Dining Plan credit, should you be interested in the toppings bar (and you should!). The amount of food can be a lot depending on your choice.

Hot tip: If you are really looking for the best value at Magic Kingdom, try to get a reservation at Be Our Guest Restaurant. If you are not able to get a reservation (and it can be very difficult to get one), this is one of your best credit values at MK.

Who Should Eat Here?

This easy answer is probably: anyone once! I think the draw to Cosmic Ray’s comes from a couple different directions. The atmosphere is fun and Sonny is a fun show while you eat. The food is above average and can be an incredibly good value, depending on what you decide to eat. The menu is also appealing to even the pickiest of eaters. I think families will be very happy when they decide to eat here.

Even though this is not an exotic or flashy pick for a meal (most of the dishes are burgers and fries, after all), it is good enough that I would recommend it. It also does not hurt that it is the only reputable option on that side of the park. Tomorrowland Terrace is inconsistent, at best. I think there are better Counter Service options at Magic Kingdom, but this is a safe option. Not to mention, there is the ultimate meat-wich in the form of the Barbecue Pork Bacon Cheeseburger.

Oh yeah, did I mention Sonny yet? He is there too!

We've always enjoyed Cosmic Ray's! The one time that we find is a little quiet is evening time. We like to go in for a burger and sit by Sonny Eclipse(yes we are all adults and are still amused!)

Back in the day (2008-2010), Cosmic Ray’s was one of our favorite places to eat because of the chicken and rib combo platter. It was an awesome value on the dining plan.

It looks like the ribs are gone and you can get the chicken only during dinner hours, but I wouldn’t hesitate to order that meal. The chicken is delicious, and both the potatoes and green beans are freshly made and tasty.

A lot of people hate the burgers there, but I don’t dislike them with a bunch of toppings. However, the buns used to be awful—like styrofoam. I’ve heard that they are not that bad now, but we haven’t eaten anywhere at WDW lately where I’ve had a chance to find out if that’s true. In the 2008-2010 timeframe, the basic rolls for things like hot dogs and hamburgers were horrible. I would remove them and eat the filling with a fork and knife as if I were doing Atkins.

Gotta love Sonny!!

I always love a good chicken and ribs combo! We both were really impressed by the meal. I cannot say that I have ever enjoyed green beans before and I thought there were really good!

The burgers are hard to differentiate between any other burger we have had. They were not spectacular, but they were good. I just love all the meat on mine!

This is a timely review! We will be at Disney next week and my plan was to hit this place for dinner. I'm not a Disney regular, so seeing nice big pictures of not only the food but the atmosphere too is very helpful! I hope we enjoy it here. :)

I definitely go against the grain on this one! Many people like it here--my family say they'll never set foot in here again! Went for lunch a couple years ago. The place is overwhelming loud and chaotic. Yes, I know it's Disney. But this place takes it to a different level! Once we got our food, we stopped to pick up utensils, condiments, etc. It was disgusting. And I don't blame the staff. The place is so chaotic, it's hard to keep up with everything. We found what I think was the only open table in the whole place and sat to eat. It's me, DH, and two teenage boys. DH and oldest DS will eat anything you put in front of them...usually. We had all ordered different things. We all took one or two bites of the food and quickly dumped the rest in the trash. It wasn't just so-so, amusement park food. It was inedible. Like I said, I know we're in the minority, that lots of people really love this place (as evidenced by the crowds!), but it just wasn't for us!

Our go to at MK if we can't get in to Be Our Guest for lunch or do not have Table service reservations. We have eaten there many times and never had a bad experience. It can get a little crowded at times during the peak lunch and dinner times.

Gosh, I thought this review was the one against the grain and your review was the norm. I have always thought Cosmic Rays was one of the worse reviewed QS meals in all of Disney (only ABC at HS is worse)
It's nasty bad food. You know it's bad when McDonald's is gourmet when compared to the food served. Crowds don't really dictate good food. They often dictate a huge restaurant and a lot of folks who don't know any better.
I'm not sure we even made 2 bites.
So we are right there with you, we will not step foot in Ray's, unless it's Christmas Party and we are getting cookies and cocoa.

Cosmic Rays is one of the only places I absolutely refuse to eat at in all of WDW. It's also the only place that we have thrown our food away, uneaten. When my son was younger it was the place we would go to out of desparation if all the lines at other QS spots were long and we didn't have an ADR. But then we had an experience where the food was so atrocious I refused to ever return. My son's hamburger was held together by stringy fibers - almost like two skinny burgers sewn together but the pocket in between was FILLED with grease. He bit into it and a FLOOD of grease poured all over his clothes - not like it dribbled a bit, it was like someone had poured a cup full of grease onto his clothes. He was probably about 8 at the time and immediately spit out the bite he took because it was so bad. This is a kid who never met a burger he didn't like at McDonald's. Yes, it was worse than McDonald's. I don't remember what my DH and I ordered but I do remember it was cold and didn't taste right either. We dumped the entire meal and had an "I told you so" moment.

The other thing that gets to me is how dirty the place always is. I literally feel disgusted before I even eat anything here. Haven't set foot inside since it was redone but I just remember how dirty the floor was and there were always kids ROLLING around the floor in front of Sonny Eclipse with all that mashed in food. Just . . .ugh!!!

I think that is a mostly fair assessment of the crowds, it is always SO busy! It can be fun, but it can also be the worst. If you are looking for a quiet meal, this is certainly not the place for you!

I am so sorry to hear that your experience with the food was bad! I can see how the food could go downhill, but my experiences have been mostly positive. What did you order?

Certainly can be overcrowded! It can be very, very loud!

I do love this location during the Christmas Party! Fun and cookies, win-win!

Our experience with the food is that it has not been bad, considering that MK table service food is not very good. Maybe we have gotten lucky or visited during times when the food was better than other times.

That sounds really gross I am sorry that it was that bad! When was that visit?

Cosmic Ray's certainly struggles with the massive crowds. The toppings bar can be pretty dirty. However, it does seem to be a massive draw! It doesn't get the headlines that Pecos Bill's does, but people line up for it.
