We were on a January Western Caribbean on the Treasure as a couple in our 60’s. This was our 7th cruise, 5th on DCL. Thought my observations may be useful.
We stayed at the Hyatt at MCO the night before joining the cruise and took a DCL transport to the port. We waited on a long line in the Hyatt, but once we got to the port, boarding was super easy and quick. We boarded around noon.
The ship is stunningly beautiful and all shiny and new. Beautiful design, plus everything is fresh. Furniture is new, carpets are new, paint job is new, grout in the bathrooms is new, all at the same time.
The staff were very anxious to please and go above and beyond. There was a higher percentage of staff new to their role, or even new to Disney, but they were working hard and doing their best.
We were in cabin 7586, cat 4. It was great. It sleeps 4. There was no murphy bed. When you looked down you saw lifeboats, which was not perfect for view, but we just didn’t look down.
I was not a fan of the food. I’m a New Englander, not used to peppers in my food, so Coco’s was difficult. That’s just a matter of preference, but meats were not high quality in all the MD Rooms. If it was something with sauce, it was good. If not, it verged on inedible. I had roast chicken one night and could not eat more than 2 bites. I didn’t ask for something else because the Roast Chicken was the only thing on the menu that wasn’t a hard no, plus we were already the last people to leave the dining room the first 2 nights. The filet mignon was so so and the pork medallions were gross and I ate less of that than of the chicken. One night I ordered from the kids menu and they served it on a kids plate, cartoon characters and dividers included. I’d ordered off the kids menu at times before and I was served on an adult plate. It didn’t bother me more than a second, but it was a little weird.
On the other hand, the sides were delicious. I don’t usually enjoy potatoes, but they did something yummy to them. The rice and veggies were great too.
It felt like there was less variety than usual in the buffet and the poolside selections. Pool side there was BBQ, hamburgers/hot dogs, tacos/burritos, and ice cream. Everything pool side and in buffet was served by staff and it didn’t look like that was easily changed to be self serve. Maybe there’s some magic way to remove those glass partitions and I just don’t know about it.
My husband is a far more adventuresome eater than I am and he agreed that the food in the MD wasn’t as good as it has been on other ships. Our table mates who were Platinum agreed. He loved the poolside and buffet food.
All of the MD restaurant theming was great. I loved the music in Coco’s. I wish there had been less of it during the meal service. We were there our first night and I would have preferred to get to know our table mates more during the meal but we really couldn’t talk during the performance. We got to know each other nights though. 1923 is beautifully elegant. Marvel was fun, but I’ve never seen any Marvel movies. I probably would have loved it if I had.
Big negative for us: The adult section had very little shade. I have to stay in the shade as much as possible when I’m in a sunny location or I get sun poisoning, even using SPF 70 liberally. We found 2 loungers in the shade, but they were right under the end of the slide and heard “coming to the end” about every 1.5 minutes the whole time we were there. After the first sea day, we hung out in the family section on the side in the shade, which was fine.
The lounges were nicely themed and drinks were fun. We got into all of them that had events at one point or another. We didn’t sit down at the Haunted Mansion lounge because it was very small and we just walked around to see it.
I had trouble sleeping one night around the 4th night and decided to do laundry. The laundry room was completely empty the whole time. I highly recommend doing laundry at 3 in the morning. The laundry room is big and very nice.
Ports: (Note, we’d been to all of the ports before)
Cozumel: we took the Ruins, Chocolate, and Beach Break excursion, which was fun and we enjoyed it. Shopping there was nice. The chocolate was delicious.
Grand Cayman: Got out and walked around the town. I don’t remember the shop staff being quite that on top of you before. Take a step, staff takes a step in every shop from t-shirts to high end jewelry. I doubt I was giving off a “shoplifter” vibe. I might have been giving off a “buyer” vibe, which I would have been if I hadn’t been followed so closely. I really couldn’t shop and gave up. If that sort of thing bothers you too, do your shopping in Cozumel.
Jamaica: We did not get off the ship because of a series of very bad experiences in terms of safety we’d had before when traveling with a group on a land trip. No one was physically hurt, but being threatened with a machete probably caused some psych problems. We considered getting off and window shopping in the port only, but we were having too much fun on the ship.
The shows has 3 showings, one in the afternoon, one around 6 and one around 8 or 8:30. We went to the B&TB matinee and it was great. (We got there very early and tried to sit in the front row of the balcony and a woman told us she had the whole row reserved for the 26 members of her family. Didn’t report. Decided 3rd row was better anyway bc then bar wouldn’t block our view.) We had the 2nd dinner seating and were busy for the matinee for Moana so we went to the 6:00. We got there before 5:30 when they open the doors and the line was very very very long. The house was probably 2/3 full when we got in. Able to get what we considered good seats. There were a few single seats scattered around once the show started. New show, so popular. It was spectacular.
Debarkation was easy and quick too. No line at all. We left the ship around 9:30 after our 2nd seating breakfast. We then stayed in the Hyatt again that night.
After we checked our bags with bell services, we took an Uber to the Poly and resort hopped for a while.
Hope this helps.
