Closet without a door?

Should I or shouldn't I? The kids' closets are in their bathrooms, which are connected to each of their rooms. The closets are 5x5, and I had originally planned to do a pocket door in the center, hanging/shelves on either side of that door and then another section at the back. In other words, the hanging/shelves would make an upside down U shape. Well, can't do the pocket door because it would slide into the portion of the wall where the towel rack would be - there's just nowhere else to put it.

So, we decided to do a standard door on the corner of the closets, so now the hanging/shelves make an upside down L shape. The door opens into the closet onto the wall. But, I've lost alot of room to put stuff by doing this. I don't want a standard door in the middle (we have that now), and it's a pain to get to the stuff behind the door. I don't want the door to open out because there just isn't room for that.

So, DD thought - why not just hang those beads in the doorway and not have a regular door on the closet and then leave the opening in the middle. What do you think??

Also, DS would have this same setup. Pretty certain he's not going to want beads hanging in his doorway - any thoughts on his? Will it look right just as a framed, open doorway. Both closets are in their own private bathrooms, so guests seeing inside the closets are not an issue.

Would a bifold door work better?

I would never, never in a million years not have a closet door. Sometimes, you just need to hide the junk...if you know what I mean.

For my DDs dorm room, there were no doors on the closets so we used a shower curtain (tension) rod and a cool shower curtain. This way, she can 'close' it off when she wants. I am sure you could find a cool curtain or fabric to hang that would match his decor. Just an idea.

That's a thought. i had not thought about the bifold doors because, honestly, I don't like them. But, we may not have any other options for these two closets. I suppose we could build it and leave it open for awhile and see how we feel about it. If it doesn't work, we could add the bifold door later.

That's good too. Guess we could just buy two of whatever shower curtain we would be using for the tub.

I was thinking of removing the closet doors on DD's bedroom closet too. We have the bypass doors now and I hate them. I thought of getting bifold doors, but the way the moulding is on the door frame now, it would need to be removed and replaced the correct way to fit the bifold doors, so that's out.

I though about putting a curtain type thing there...I looked shower curtains, but the standard size shower curtain is too short. Maybe I could get two and stitch them together to make it long enough. I would go with the fabric type curtain over nothing though.

My DD has beads on her closet door....she likes the look of it (and so do I), but the rule is....she has to keep her closet clean! sometimes that is a "little" bit of a challenge, but she is doing good with it (and after all...she IS only 6!!!...LOL!!!!)

Oo - didn't think about the height of the shower curtain. You're right, it would be too short. Probably would be better to go with a coordinating curtain panel.

And I didn't even think of a curtain panel...I think I will need to go shopping!

My DD13 does not have a closet door. I made heavy curtains out of her old beadspread and stapled them, to the wall. It is satin stripes in different shades of pik and purple and really looks cool (I made valances for the windows from the same beadspread). All her teenie bopper friends (including the two who live in mansions) think she has the BEST room. However, I also don't have a door on some linen shelves in her bathroom (we have no room for a door really) and I do not like the way that looks. I don't want to hang a curtain cause it looks really bad (IMO) and so I am on a fruitless search for really cheap wicker baskets for the shelves.

My DD will be 9 - and she does do a pretty good job of keeping hers clean too. The new closet should be easier to keep clean, lots of shelves and drawers. I'm really okay with no door, I think. And I thought the beads would be cute. Just didn't want to do something that we would regret later down the road. If I put the doorway in the middle, there's no way we can ever add a "standard" door later, so didn't want to burn any bridges now.

I love that look! I'm doing that in my laundry room. Open shelving instead of base cabinets, and I plan to have wicker baskets for each of the compartments.

Something I did with towels in my apartment days because there was no linen closet - I had a small wicker bookcase, but I rolled the towels instead of folding them. Just helped them "display" better. Would that help for now?

Can you roll bedding as well do you think (I have the kid'd bedding in there as well). This is a good idea. I think I'll try it. :wave2:

Can't hurt to try. Even now with a linen closet, I still roll the big beach towels. They just store easier that way. Good luck!

I bought a bunch of lined ones in different sizes for the family room shelves. They were relatively inexpensive at Big Lots, and the one near me had lots last week.

I agree!!

Maybe a bi-fold mirrored door? You can never have too many mirrors in a bathroom.
Another way to store bedding is to fold or roll it and put everything inside one pillowcase.

You could try hanging a sheet over the closet opening. Get a sheet that coordinates with the rooms. The top finished edge of the sheet could probably hold a tension rod or curtain rod, and wouldn't require any sewing at all! Plus, the sheets come in different sizes, so chances are one of the sizes would fit the opening, and be long enough.

Go to a discount store or outlet...you can get sheets pretty inexpensively there.
