Until today, I didn't even know carpet beetles existed. According to our exterminator, DS14's gross bedroom is infested with them despite our efforts to get him to clean it up. Our exterminator is coming to do a second treatment next week. He told us to clean it out but gave us little advice other than washing all of the bedding and vacuuming under the bed.

Does anyone have any further advice? For example, do we need to do anything special to treat his stuffed animals? I really don't want it to spread, especially since my sister is coming to stay for Thanksgiving and the guest bedroom shares a Jack and Jill bath with our son's bedroom.

a quick google search came up with the following-

Carpet beetles are attracted to loose, easily consumed food sources. Although they can chew through whole fabric, they’re more likely to seek out damaged or torn fabrics. They’re particularly prone to eating lint, dust, hairballs, damaged furniture, and dead insects. Cleaning up the debris that attracts carpet beetles is the single best way to prevent them. Regularly vacuum, sweep, and dust, especially in areas where carpet beetle infestations seem likely (such as your attic). Carpet beetle infestations last longest when larvae have a consistent source of food. Usually, this consistent source will be an old, damaged or dirty rug or other piece of fabric. Stored clothing, old rugs and carpeting, or dirty sheets are all particularly likely infestation sites. Go through your storage looking for old materials that could foster carpet beetle growth. Thoroughly clean and wash all the fabrics you keep in your home on a regular basis. When you’re not using the fabric, store it somewhere airtight to make it harder for beetles to access. ‍

Carpet beetles like to gather in dark, low-traffic places in your home like closets, storage areas, your attic, in air ducts and of course, underneath your carpet. You may also find live beetles in your windows in the spring and summer months. you may already have an infestation you're not aware of in your spare room-if it's like mine it's definatly both low traffic and dark for the majority of the time.

How do you get rid of carpet beetles on stuffed animals?

Treatment with heat or in the freezer will kill
the larvae and adult beetles. Keep infested items in the freezer for a period of 2 days or more, or treat with hot water and soap. Dry cleaning can also remove an infestation from clothing and stuffed toys, etc.

this reminds me of when we dealt with an outbreak of lice. we ended up tossing the bulk of the kids stuffed animals, only holding onto the most cherished (and bagging for over a week in the freezer, then running through high heat on the dryer follwed by shop vacuuming them cuz it skeeved me out so much).

Diatomaceous earth sprinkled onto and swept into carpets will kill them. You can leave it for a couple of weeks and then vacuum it out.

We had carpet beetles in our home when we bought it. I was able to get them taken care of with one of the kits from DoMyOwn.com they have a wealth of info and treatments for all sorts if everything. Just search carpet beetles from the home page.

After we had hardwood floors put in, I scattered a lot of wool area rugs around. They are surprisingly affordable from various online sources, and really pretty.
Enter the carpet beetles. We had them everywhere. They like natural fabrics. I tossed all the rugs and put the Diatomaceous earth around some perimeters. That got rid of them and they never came back.

They are NOT persistent like bed bugs. They're seasonal and just like certain things. It wasn't a huge problem. But only synthetic rugs from here on out.

We had them once under/behind the couch when the kids were crumb making machines and we were not vacuuming under/behind the couch enough. (Needed to be more than every 2 months.) We moved the sectional and vacuumed daily for two weeks using a light to see them along the space where the carpet met the baseboard. Then twice a week for the next week and they were gone.

I would give everything you can a run through your most serious washer cycle and vacuum the area daily. We have a strict only water upstairs policy, but my kids are still in elementary school.
