Here is an interesting thought. You know the vinyl they sell by cricut, for decorating in the home with quotes etc.

Well I emailed a company that specializes in the vinyl that is used for making the neat Disney Decals we all have on our windows :)

It's got a 6year life and is called Oracal 651 .
I'm buying a roll to try with the expressions, or little bug and customize some stuff for my "mickey van"

The roll runs as 12"x10 yards for $11.20 a roll!

What a great idea! I, too, would like to see pics!

What are these Disney Decals you speak of?
Sounds like a neat product. How can we get some? Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Where would you go to get the vinyl for decorating? I would love to do that. It would be much less expensive than hiring someone to paint quotes.

To answer questions, Not sure about printer. I know the vinyl is adhesive backed. And I'll try to find you all the link where someone on another board used the expressions to cut it.

This is the website to order from www.signwarehouse.com
I hope to get my order early next week and I'll let you all see when it's done.

JenR the decals we speak of are the white ones you see on back windows, like a family with mickey ears, I have many faces of Mickey. And a Tinkerbell.
I'm sure you've seen them as well.

Kathy

i'd also love to see the pics.

i have the mother, father and little boy on my back window and i LOVE them!

Is the vinyl only for windows or can it be used on walls too?

I have the mickey family on my back window and DD has the princess girl and tinkerbell on her side windows.

I've done a quote in our entryway with Wall Pops. I wonder how these products compare.

I don't know the difference between the 651 and the 641. If the 641 would work on the walls, that comes in more colors. 15"x10yds for $11.25. You would have to cut that down for even the Expression. I'd really like to get brown, but Wall Pops doesn't have a brown yet, and this looks like a better deal than the Cricut vinyl.

And what is perf and non-perf? I can't picture a roll of vinyl being perforated like paper towels, but I don't know what else it would mean.

If it works well we could do a vinyl swap/share where we all chip in and get lots of different colors...that way we could all have fun and not have to buy so many rolls of colors each!

I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading this thread. I'm interested to see some pictures of the final product!

I realize this thread is old, but I couldn't resist posting since I use Oracal 651 and order from Signwarehouse.com .

I'm not a sign shop but I make vinyl decals using Oracal 651. This brand and series is highly recommended and trusted, and inexpensive. Oracal 641 I believe has a shorter life duration than 651. The right series just varies based on your needs, whether you need vinyl for indoor or outdoor use. For technical info regarding each Oracal series and free samples you can visit the Oracal website:

You can't order from them, but SignWarehouse.com has been one of the least inexpensive places to order from that I have found, and I have not had any issues. Regarding "perf" vs. "non-perf", this is referring to perforations on the sides of the vinyl sheeting. Imagine using a hole punch to punch holes only along the 2 edges of the vinyl sheeting, that's basically what a perforated roll looks like. My machine has clamps, but I guess there's some machines that have pegs, and the perf. sides would get loaded onto the pegs as a way to register the direction and alignment. It only takes away about 1/2 an inch on either side so it doesn't really matter which you order since either clamps or pegs will still end up wasting about 1/2 an inch on either side. Sometimes you can't select which you would like when ordering.

Pretty sure you need to have an appropriate printer for printing on vinyl, and 651 may not be suitable for printing, at least not regular inkjet printing. Possibly thermal printing. Anyway if anyone wants to get serious about this or wants more info, this forum is really great and has plenty of info for people who are just starting out:

Oh, and also wanted to mention this. Rather than ordering rolls of vinyl especially if you're not sure it will all be used, most local sign shops should have their vinyl available for sale by the foot or yard for a few dollars. Before I bought my machine (not a Cricut or similar) I use to cut my decals by hand and I would purchase vinyl by the foot from Tap Plastics. Sometimes I would get free scraps of large pieces of vinyl. This is a good inexpensive way to get several colors, and the sizing is not a square foot so you usually end up getting a fairly well sized sheet - which can always be cut to fit your machine. "Contact" brand clear vinyl kitchen shelf liner works well as transfer film.

All these are good inexpensive "do-it-yourself" suggestions. Not really recommended if you plan to sell your creations. Better to invest in the good stuff.

My boyfriend's father works for the township. He has a machine similar to a Cricut that he has made car decals on before. He uses a very basic vinyl for this. I am sure you don't have to order anything special to make them, but I'll double check.
