Still thinking about DVC, and have a question. Can 2 people at different addresses buy DVC together? My sister and I are very close and usually travel together. I would love to put her on my DVC contract so she could get the perks, like AP discount, is this allowed? We have already discussed it, and the pioints would be mine, and if she uses them, she will pay me for points.

Yes, but the points would not be "yours" legally. If the unforeseen should happen, it is legally a joint asset.

This is from the FAQ on the DVC member web site.

Who is eligible to receive the Annual Pass discount?
Disney Vacation Club Members receive a discount on the Pass for themselves and their immediate family residing in the same household only. At the time of purchase or redemption, your Disney Vacation Club Member ID Card must be provided and ALL ADULTS must present a valid driver's license or state identification card showing they reside in the same household.

You can have more than one owner, but there can only be one main purchaser-everyone else is listed as an additional purchaser. Disney will just have one address on file (the main purchaser's).

Not exactly true...it is a real estate transaction, the owners are equal. They will each have a membership card.

I'd be very careful. Legally half of your DVC would be hers. If there's a divorce, bankruptcy, death, you could lose half.

You should just purchase it yourself. Any "perks" your sister will loose do not outweigh the potential of her having legal ownership of half of your property.:sad2: Even if she were in a position to split the cost of a contract right now with you, I would still not recommend buying property together if you don't have to. Good Luck:thumbsup2

As Chuck notes, that's not accurate. While there is a Primary contact there is not a primary owner. ALL owners can have their addresses listed and all owners will get a copy of mailing as well as perks. Under this clause the more owners listed at different addresses, the more people eligible to get the perks/discounts.

I would agree with some of the cautions. It does become a shared asset and would have some risk financially from any owner up the the % that person owns. I guess one could potentially write the deed such that they own a small %, I don't know how that works legally in FL. Or one could put the other names on a small add on only that was already owned or purchased for this purpose. That would make the add on then a totally separate membership but it would offer some protection and doesn't add that much aggravation to the accounting. One could either run them independently with linking reservations or just transfer the points from the small contract back to the original one every year. All you'd lose if you did the transfer routinely every year would be the ability to borrow those exact points to use in the larger contract.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to look up the reference to which I was referring yesterday as I was on my way out, but this is what it says in the purchase agreement. There is one principal contact.

"By execution of this agreement, purchaser hebeby appoints the person set forth above as PURCHASERS Pincipal Contact for the purpose of acting on behalf of the PURCHASER in case there is any disagreement among multiple PURCHASERs regarding the use of an Ownership Interest, and PURCHASER acknowledges that PURCHASER may be required to pay an administrative fee not to exceed $25.00 to change the designation of the Principal Contact."

Each owner may receive a membership card (and be on the deed), but there is only one person who gets the deciding vote on how to use the points in cases of disagreement. It was my understanding that the address for Principal Contact was the one and only address on file....

See my post above as it speaks directly to this issue. They do have addresses on file for all members. They do require a principle contact but I don't recall ever hearing of that requirement come into play. Regardless, it doesn't apply to the area of perks as it is not a primary owner, only a primary contact. In the area of perks DVC could certainly change the rules if they so chose but I doubt they would in this situation because the enforcement would be far more difficult and expensive to the system than any issues with those handful that could exploit such a setup. While I do know of a handful of instances of friends/families buying smaller contracts with multiple owners for the main purpose of the AP discount, I'm sure this is an extremely small number of people overall. Some of them also use the points to get a day room for DDP and PH access as well as a respite area during the time of the reservation.

Dean,
For regular perks where you just show your membership card, obviously this would not come into play. For the AP, it was my understanding that they do an address verification against the drivers license and the address on file for the principal contact .... (maybe the system is not that restrictive? :confused3 )

...just to piggyback on the above. I am named principal contact on 3purchase agreements, but somehow Disney morphed that into DH being principal contact. And for some reason--all reservations made under this contract are addressed to him. (And, on the on-line account I am listed as an additional purchaser. ) So, if DVC is able to keep track of addressess for folks from two households--that is great (I just haven't seen that flexibility).

It's per member address, not per contract and not per principle contact. I can get 8, my daughter can get 8 if there are enough that qualify at the given addresses in question.

They can and do track each member and addresses. So different members with different addresses all get everything including usually multiple mailings. Actually my wife and I and my daughter all get copies of mailings other than emails because my wife hasn't actually signed up for the emails.

Here's a different example. When we first bought we were one of the first resale buyers for DVC, likely the first it appears. The lawyer put only my name on it by mistake and we didn't realize it until it was too late. We then added her as an associate but she didn't have a membership card. So when we bought a second contract a couple of years later, my wife was insistent on being listed and getting her own separate mailings. DVC didn't have a problem with our request, they just had trouble making it happen because the address was the method they used to weed out duplicate mailings as it turns out but MS really didn't know that because they have an outside company do the mailings. It'd work for a while with us getting duplicates then something would happen and it'd stop. I ended up, at DVC's suggestion, putting my work address on the original contract and that worked much better. Now as we've sold both of those 2 original contracts, my wife and I get our mailings separately at the same address and my daughter does at her address as well. The funny thing is after my wife and I bought a separate master contract (different UY) she ended up getting a membership card for the contract she was not ever listed on.

Your best bet would be to each purchase your own points resale...then, you don't have to worry.

For example...if you were planning on getting together to purchase 160 points...just purchase each a 80 point contract. If you are looking at purchasing 200 points...you can now purchase direct from Disney for 100 points each at Saratoga and AKV.

If you take a vacation together, you could book the first 3 nights on one contract and the next 3 nights on the other contract...etc...etc...

You can also make a transfer from one account to the other each year. So...just transfer all the points from one account into the other each year if you want to make reservations out of one account. This way...you are both members...you can add-on as you want...you own your "half".

Speed :teleport:

That's not true. I am an owner and my husband and my daughter are also owners (additional purchasers). Whenever I add points all 3 of us have to sign the paperwork. My daughter does not live with me and has a different address (which is listed on the contract under her name). Whenever I get any ads or promotions, she also gets them too. She buys APs for her and her family members under her address and my husband and I under our address. Even when the 15th anniversary art work was given away, she got one and I got one. We have owned since summer 2005 and have gotten APs for the past 4+ years with no problem.

Well, I stand corrected. (I was misinformed as to how the AP benefit worked). If you are on the deed, it is only right that you get also get the perks.

I recently purchased a resale to VWL with enough points to take my in-laws with us every year as payment for them babysitting twice a week. I also pay for their AP's so I decided to add them to the deed to get the discount. My friend (a lawyer) did all the deed work for me, it cost me about $35 in recording fees and I had to install a new sink at his house. Disney wanted $300 for the deed work. He told me that it would have cost about $125 if I would have walked into his office off the street.

I trust my in-laws 100%, if I trusted someone 99.999% I would NOT do a joint membership, especially if you have the choice up front. Two 100 pt contracts are almost the same as one 200 pt contract. It could be more difficult if you are buying through Disney and the point minimum is too high, but then I would lean towards a resale where you can get a smaller contract.

Just my .02 - Good luck with whatever your choice.

I changed 4 deeds for under $60.

I agree with the post regarding purchasing two smaller resale contracts.(you each have one) This way you can chose your favorite two resorts & have the "Home" advantage of booking 11 months out for the ppoints at that resort. You can bank/borrow and alternate from year to year between the two resorts.

Another thought... If you buy on your own, you can make her an associate member, so she can make reservations, contact MS with any questions, issues, etc. If you do the two resale contracts... I'm not sure if you can become an associate member of a contract if you already are a DVC member.

While the idea of owning two different smaller contracts is not a bad one, getting there is certainly more expensive than a single larger contract. Two separate 100 pt contracts is likely going to be around $7-8 a point more than buying a single 200 pt contract. It would give you the option of doing 2 different resorts as you note which you could do for one or two master contracts. You can be an associate on one contract if you are an owner on another, it happens a lot with DVC.
