British Flag on Independence Day

Hey All!!

DH and I are at the World and noticed something that I wonder how others feel about.

We were on the monorail yesterday to the Magic Kingdom and on Bay Lake Towers, we noticed a U.S. flag hung over a balcony. Near by, was a British flag hung the same way.

I have my own feelings about this, and my DH expressed his to me when he saw it. Before I elaborate, I was wondering how others felt about this before I let my feelings known!

Keep in mind, Independence Day represents the emancipation from British rule and a precursor to war. While I hold no ill feelings towards our British friends, I am wondering if others feel this:

a) no big deal
b) offensive
c) insulting but nothing to get in a twist over

On the monorail, I noticed some others who expressed a sentiment.

What do you all think?

Just curious...

It's no big deal. Why would it be? Disney itself probably didn't do it.

No big deal, if these were guest balconies. UK guests have just as much right to their national pride, regardless of what day it is.

In related flag irritations though, I'm a relatively recent (1 year) transplant to Texas, and it's a continual source of annoyance to me that the state flag is plastered everywhere, usually without the US flag, and NEVER the other way around. The identity of folks down here seems to be "Texan first, American second," and it feels unpatriotic to me.

It could have been a British family staying there. They can hang their flag if they want. They are under no obligation to observe our holiday.

Personally I think both are tacky, I don't like to see things hanging on the resort balconies. And actually DVC members have been instructed not to do this.

I think it's no big deal for a couple of reasons

One - we're still friends with England - we split off and yet they're still our allies and our buddies across 'the pond'.

Two - I've been married to a Brit for almost 22 years - we joke about the 4th of July a lot :cool1:

The hanging from the resort balcony would be what stands out to me, not the nationality of the flag! That just seems kind of odd.

Today when we went to MK, we parked next to a minivan that had plastic British flags attached to the windows. We didn't for a second think "How dare they, on THIS day!"

No big deal. While yes, WDW happens to be in the US, it is just that....a multicultural WORLD on its own. You are bound to see such things. They are probably visitors from the UK showcasing their own pride and then also celebrating the 4th of July being there, as well.

HI! Okay, well I have never EVER saw a British flag or any other flag hung over the balcony before. It's just odd they would hang a British flag on a very specific USA Holiday. Brunette

No big deal. Why should it bother me if a Brit wanted to hang a flag off their balcony?

My grandfather was from Texas and 5 or 6 times a year some of his people would come up to visit him in Tennessee. I've never met a Texan who wasn't proud to be a Texan.

Hi! I agree with what you are saying, we took a boat ride to the GF from the MK and someone had all their laundry hung out over their balcony. I couldn't believe it! :scared1:

Well, for all you know, it's been hanging there for a week.

This is the same thought I had. Also, do you know for sure that they only had it displayed for today? It might have been on their balcony for the entire duration of their trip. My guess is that they were guests from the UK and just wanted to do that as a way to show they were from the UK. Not a big deal.

Hi! Saw this yesterday July 3rd. Yes, it could have been up there for the duration of stay, but I have never seen any type of flags hung on these balconies before, and we go to Disney 4-6 times a year. Brunette

As long as the US flag was displayed in accordance with the Flag Code, no big deal.

No Big Deal! The Brits are probably the best allies we have these days.

The official Wimbledon Twitter account tweeted everyone a Happy Forth of July first thing this morning.

Yep. That's Texas. They are fiercely independent. I don't mind it, though.

Because you have not seen it does not mean it has never happened.
