HI,

my son wears glasses - and i just ordered him extra's from zennioptical which we love - they do not show sports/goggles for kids - my son needs them to play soccer in the fall - any clue if any of the on-line glasses places sell them for a reasonable price?

thanx

lisa

We got my son's Rec Specs from our Target optical center. They had children's specs in the store so he could try them on before we ordered them to make sure he like the way they fit.

I got my son's from a local optical place. Only $150, I didn't think that was bad at all. My husband is out with ds picking them up right now!

Don't go anywhere until you check out ZenniOptical web site!!!
There are several threads on this board about how great and inexpensive they are!!

yes, i ordered from Zenni for regular glasses, but it does not show "kids" sports glasses

I got my DD6's sport's goggles at Americas Best for 79$. They serve their purpose and she was able to choose from 3 different colors, red blue and black. She says that they are comfortable.

OK - this is so funny because we were in the same boat and priced out Rec Specs at a number of different places. They aren't cheap! Then - - we went to Wal-Mart! OMGoodness! What a bargin. The frames were only $45. I wrote down the exact model # and everything and they were teh Rec Specs we had seen for upwards of $100 for just the frames. My optical dept (who has a price match) told me that I was simply wrong. :rotfl: They worked great for baseball - they looked just like sunglasses with a strap in back.

Then we were in again about 2 weeks ago as he needs clear lenses for basketball. We got the goggle style this time, and they were having a back to school special for the lenses - I think the total was around $70.

Do you have a Wal-Mart near by? Ask for Rec Specs. They are awesome.

My son got rec specs at walmart with transitional lenses plus 1 year insurance for $143. They have different promos during each month. I think it was 1/2 off when i went.

Thanx for all the replies,

I am going to Check out Walmart as that is the closest to me - i will check actually Walmart and Costco since i'm a member there!

I don't want to order them till next month as my son has an eye appt. and i want to make sure his prescription is not changing!

A little bit OT, but the technician at our eye doctor actually talked us "out" of getting these kind of glasses for my 7 year old for the upcoming football season (and they play tackle!). I believe his explanation was something regarding the tight fit of a football helmet, would prevent the larger goggle type from fitting right. He said the helmet would actually keep his face/glasses protected. On a side note, he also said that many kids who get these glasses can't see right because the frame is so distracting, so they just refuse to wear them at all. Can anyone second this?

Has anyone been told this about football? I don't want to learn a horrible lesson here, at the expense of my son's face or eyes! TIA.

It would be a tight fit with a football helmet, but the Rec Specs are not distraccting at all. My son used them for baseball, and believe me - he would have complained if they were in any way distracting.
This is the style we used for baseball:

They have a regular arm(?) that connects the front frame and the arm that goes over the ear - it is not a strap. The strap is at the back connecting the arms around the back of the head - does that make sense? In other words, without the back strap, they would look like regular glasses. We got them tinted - amber - but not transitional.

Costco doesn't sell Rec Specs (at least not here) but they do have great prices!

I have 8 year old triplets. They have the rec specs that are tinted, so they double as sunglasses. They wear them for soccer and love them! In fact, they wear them around the house and say that they are more comfortable then their regular glasses. They wear them when they play outside too! We start tackle football tonight, so I'll let you know if there are any complaints about wearing them under the helmets. I know that they probably won't be able to wear the strap on them because as soon as they put the helmet on, the strap and rec specs slide down.

I searched the web and could not find a single place to get quality sport eyewear for a realistic price. So, if you are still in the need, I would highly reccomend SportEyes.com...

sporteyes.com

If you are looking specifically for sports related eyewear then check here:

We got some for my DD at Sears Optical. They were resonable and she wears them for outdoor soccer and indoor too. Last spring break she broke her regular glasses and ended up wearing her Rec Specs for the week we were out of town without a problem.

IME, the usual recommendation for football players is soft contacts.

I got my DD a spare pair of glasses this summer at Walmart - $35 total for lenses and frame! And the lenses are the good polycarbonate whatever they are for kids. Glad I did - her glasses lost a screw, and she needed the spare pair for a week until I got the others fixed.

Our Costco didn't have rec specs, and my DD decided not to play soccer this year. Last year she played some soccer, and we were told it was the last age that they would let her play with regular glasses. I don't think our Walmart had them, but I'd definitely check! I am going there from now on! They are so cheap, helpful, and only took less than a week to get them in. She actually has only had her current script for about 6 months, and is saying things are getting blurry again in the distance. I'm calling today for a new appointment.

She is very good with hygiene I think, so next spring I'm getting her contact lenses (daily disposable, which I wear until I hope to get lasek in Feb). Her eyes are quite bad, and the glasses are sometimes a pain. Some kids get contacts the summer before middle school. I would worry about tackle football - but my kids don't really play any sports, so I don't know!

I checked with the optician once, where she got an exam, and they were outrageous priced for the rec specs (which she would have maybe worn 10 times total). The doctor was really pushing them, even for PE, but I wasn't going to spend $350 plus for them. She's just going to get contacts instead.

wow what an old thread coming back alive LOL! I got my son Sports Glasses at Walmart and they were only $75.00! it will be 2 years this spring i think....
