Could anyone recommend, from your experience, a good Park N' Fly and Hotel out of the Detroit Airport. I'm not necessarily looking for the lowest price, but the most secure parking and decent hotel.

Thanks. :)

We parked right at the Smith terminal last year when we flew Spirit. 2 minute walk $9 per day.

Is this "the Big Blue Deck"??? we're flying Southwest in Jan, and I've only flown from DTW twice in my entire life. The last time we had a park'n'fly with the Best Western, and our parking was at Airlines Parking. Only complaint I had was fighting with everyone to get a shuttle ... pretty tough to do with 2 children, 4 suitcases and a set of golf clubs. People were very rude and pushy. We were one of the first sets of people out there, and couldn't get a shuttle ... I finally enlisted the help of the person directing the shuttles and explained that we had been there a long time and couldn't get a shuttle, so she stopped the next one coming and told him to take us first. :thumbsup2

We're not doing a hotel stay this time unless the weather looks bad, so I'm interested in anyone's experiences with where they just park. :)

TIA

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn, it is a new hotel and the rooms were nice. The long term parking is right next door, so you can park there and use their transporatation (buses every few minutes) or park the night before and use the hotels's bus which is on a schedule. It is nice going straight back to the parking lot as they tend to have more buses than hotels do. Also being an actual parking lot it is fenced and secure.

Thanks for your reply. We fly Spirit and that's where we usually park too. This time we have an early morning flight so I need a parking and hotel package. ( I will have to edit my original post )

So I need park n' fly plus hotel.

I've been on the DTW website, so I'd like to know what lot you parked in? It says Smith terminal is Admin offices only, but right beside the North Terminal? And the only parking I see that is within walking distance of North is the Big Blue Deck, and it's $16/day. :confused3

Thanks.

Parked at the Smith terminal in Oct/07/. 9 dollars per day.
North Terminal was under construction.
See map for location of my vehicle. Tip of arrow in bottom left corner is close to where I parked.
Looks like they've upped their rates

Agreed. This is the best place we've encountered and is the top-rated hotel in the DTW area (according to tripadvisor.com). I would recommend you park overnight in the hotel lot and then move your vehicle to the long-term lot when you are ready to leave for the airport the next morning. Their shuttle will follow you as you park your vehicle and you are on your way almost instantly. If you use the hotel's shuttle, I believe it only goes every half hour - so you are at the mercy of their schedule.

We parked on the big blue deck, top level. We just kept going around and around until we got to the top and it was pretty much empty so we parked right by the doors. It will be nice when the walkway is opened but we took the shuttle. When we returned we also had to wait at least a half hour for a shuttle. The nice part of the parking is slip your credit card in when you enter the parking and slip it in to leave the parking. Done in one step.

Another vote for the Fairfield Inn here:thumbsup2
We stayed there March Break this year, it was a nice hotel, and very convenient parking, shuttle, and pick-up.

For those of you who stayed at the Fairfield Inn, was there an extra charage for 4 people in the room. When I look under the general Park/Sleep/Fly website and select Fairfield Inn, the price is based on single occupancy. :confused3

Just checked, and we paid $99 for 2 adults, 2 kids on March 7/08 ($109 with taxes):)
We had one queen bed and one queen pull out sofa. There was a flat screen tv in the living area where the pull out was, and a regular tv where the other bed was. The bedroom area was separated with a half wall, and there was a small bar fridge, coffee maker, microwave.
They also had a great continental breakfast.

Enjoy:goodvibes

I can't comment because there were only two of us in the room, but petbren seems to have answered the question for you. When we went to the lobby for breakfast we found several staff members also partaking of it. A tip one of them gave us - if you decide to opt for the microwaveable sausage and egg sandwich, don't eat the biscuit the sandwich comes in. Instead, toast a bagel at the same time you're nuc'ing the sandwich and then transfer the egg to the toasted bagel once both are heated.

My SIL stayed at the Howard Johnson as did a friend of mine. My SIL said it was the worst hotel she'd ever stayed in and my friend's car got broken into.

I've stayed at the Clarion, the hotel was fine but the service wasn't great. I used to always stay at the Doubletree which is a beautiful hotel, but it's now the Metropolitan and the service is aweful now. Room service didn't have the first 3 things on the menu that I wanted. I requested a main floor room 3 months in advance and got a 3rd floor room. Their elevators are tiny, so we have to make 3 trips to the room from the lobby. Requested a crib/pack & play well in advance and it took me calling 3 times to get one after 9 pm (DS goes to bed at 7 pm. They had to borrow one from another hotel. Then in the AM, there was no cream/milk for coffee in the lobby and no one would go get any.

Now we stay at the Ramada for $89/night at it includes 7 days parking across the road at Airlines Parking. They have a decent Continental breakfast, with sugar free syrup, which I was surprised to see. We had a little trouble the first time we checked in (new employee, not well informed, I think). But the next morning the staff certainly made up for it. We have our 4th stay booked with them in 8 days!!

I would suggest you book directly through the Marriott web site. Parksleepfly.com charges a $4.95 transaction charge, but I punched in a sample date and the rates from both sites were identical. Marriott also allows you to book for more than one person without the warning that you may get charged extra for additional people. Save yourself the extra fee.

We stayed at the Fairfield in September. It is a nice hotel, The rate we had was $109 including breakfast, parking and shuttle. You just can't beat it for value. The only warning is if you look for dinner the night before do not go to the Big Boy up the road......not good. Big Boys usually are not bad but this one was dirty and the food not great. The La Quinta Inn is right across the driveway from the Fairfield and we stayed their the year before, it is not as new or nice but it was fine and did the job.

Thank you for your replys. I think we will book the Fairfield Inn in the event of an early morning flight. ;)

We are flying out of Detroit the Thursday before March break, (12th). When I try to look up rates for the Fairfield for the Wed night, I get a rate of 165.00
with parking. Alot of people seem to get 109.00. Any suggestions?

How did you like the shuttle service for Airlines parking? When we used them last year, it was complete chaos trying to get onto the shuttle at the airport to return to our vehicle. One of us had to stay with the kids, but DH couldn't really handle all the luggage, so we were one of the first people out there but could never get on a shuttle. We ended up asking the person directing the traffic to help us out, and she stopped the next shuttle that came and told the driver to take us first. I wish they had some sort of a queue set up. Has it improved at all???

Other than that, I liked the lot, and felt that my vehicle was secure. :goodvibes

TIA for any info you can provide. :)

We were in Florida from Dec 14-21 and we stayed at the Westin, right in Mcnamara terminal. We paid $159.00 plus tax and this included free valet parking for 8 days. It was so nice to pull up to the front door of the hotel and have them park the car for you. The hotel is beautiful, the NWA luggage checkins are right beside the hotel, and if you go back to the hotel lobby, they have a separate security checkin that no one seems to use but hotel guests. And when you get home, you just phone them up on the courtesy phone while you are getting your luggage and when you go and get your car it is at the hotel entrance and all warmed up. We will always stay there when we fly out of Detroit
