Best free birthday desserts?

I'll be taking my daughter on a WDW 21st birthday trip @ New Years. It got me thinking about the birthday cupcakes, etc. that restaurants sometimes bring out. What's the best free dessert you've ever received for a celebration? I know most restaurants will bring out the standard cupcake, but some signatures offer different items. Thanks!

All of the cupcakes we've ever received complimentary for a special occasion looked and tasted exactly the same. You can, of course, order something special off the menu or, in some restaurants, have cakes and other special desserts pre-ordered and delivered, but they wouldn't be complimentary.

For my 30 birthday my friend had a custom cake made for me, and it was amazing! It’s been years and I still think about how delicious it was. You can arrange to have it delivered to the restaurant you have a reservation at, and while it’s an extra charge it made it so special.

For free desserts Ive only seen/gotten cupcakes, although once when I was having a rough day at French Quarter a CM came over and gave me a Mickey beignet. Wasn’t my birthday (I was unable to finish the half marathon and was really upset about it) but it was a very nice gesture.

I am guessing you mean best dessert for free? Because we usually order and pay for a birthday cake.

Other than that, received the same standard birthday cupcake many times and autographed birthday cards. If we order and pay for dessert, they often add a message to the plate. Only once has a restaurant comped a free regular dessert, that was at Narcoossee’s.

I had a blue iced cupcake at Tusker House ON my birthday (2 days after my WDW wedding)
It was just a vanilla cupcake, but it was special to me, because, I *never* get a birthday cake - I am responsible for birthday and other celebrations in our family, so, it seems wrong to organise a cake for myself. Maybe now my kids are getting big enough to bake...PLUS it was at BREAKFAST - Cake for breakfast?! Yes please!

My husband got a free cupcake at BOG during lunch once when they realized it was his birthday.

It is completely random and up to your server.
expect nothing and be happy for a basic cupcake

if you want to do something special and have a good budget, a custom cake can be amazing

we have a pinned post @lurkyloo puts tog. I don’t think there is anyone who knows more about custom Disney stuff. She is amazing!

there are limits as to how customized you can get and where. The sticky thread has all the details and lots and lots of pictures!

We've only gotten the cupcakes. Since we are always on the DxDDP, sometimes they put a candle in the dessert we order. Last year we went for 2 weeks. The 3rd day of the trip was my BDay. I did wear the pin and had BDay ears I wore at Fantasmic! 1900 PF for breakfast, I got a cupcake. Dinner at Brown Derby. they put a candle in the dessert I ordered.

Fast forward to our last night, 11 days later, and the waiter at Chef De France came at me with a candle in my dessert and a bunch of staff singing Happy Birthday! I literally thought he had the wrong table. I must have looked so puzzled because he said "Is it your birthday?" I said "No!!" My birthday was long forgotten at that point! He apologized and said he had a note that it was. Then it dawned on me I originally had the CdF ressie for my birthday and swapped for the Fantasmic! package. I then apologized to him and let him know it was my birthday...almost 2 weeks prior! Awkward!

But, my friends did surprise me with this cake sent to my room :)

I have heard of some people with allergies getting things like an allergy friendly cookie or brownie instead. I've heard most of the frostings Disney uses are hard to make allergy safe.
I had a full dessert platter brought to me when we went to Aulani.

My dh was at Disney world on his 50th a couple weeks ago and didn’t get anything, so it’s definitely not something that always happens.

For sure. That’s why people say, don’t expect anything. If you want a special dessert, order it yourself.

My husband goes every year on his birthday. We never expect free anything. We’re not really dessert people so I just buy him something that looks tasty from the resort food court. Then we light a candle, sing happy birthday and go on our merry way. I don’t even know why I bother. I don’t think he even eats it. Lol.

The only free birthday dessert we've received that wasn't the standard cupcake was a super cute mickey shaped strawberry shortcake during out Trail's End brunch. DS11 felt extra super special because our server went out of her way to get a special dessert to him since Trail's End does not have strawberry shortcake at their brunch buffet. Considering TE and HDDR share a kitchen, I know she didn't go super out of her way, but DS found it fantastic to be the only table in the restaurant eating strawberry shortcake at 10am

The only free birthday treats given outside of the standard plain cupcake are completely at the discretion of each cast member. They are very few and far between.

Everyone is celebrating SOMETHING at WDW nowadays, and the expectations got out of hand.

I will have to say the Svens Green Apple Cheesecake in Norway for our engagement.

I think LG or CM initiated activities are the best time for throwing things in and around a pool. It lets other swimmers know when, where, and for how long they will need to be more cautious of flying objects.

And I'm not against people playing games and pool shenanigans in general if the area is not crowded to the point that your game is likely to impact (literally) other guests.

Here are some actual pool hijinks I have witnessed myself. I'm curious to find people who would not be bothered by them
  1. A tween aged child would spin in place and then at 'random' chop his hand into the water to send the largest splash possible which ever way he happened to be facing. I say 'random' because he had a knack for dropping large handfuls of water on guests sunbathing well outside the pool. Splashing must be every bit as much a normal pool activity as playing catch right?
  2. A group of children wearing float vests were playing together near a slide exit and when one of the shorter ones got tired of swimming against the current she would grab on to me or my friend. As it happens my friend is a bit on the frail side and easily jostled, she's fine in the pool up until the point a stranger's kid puts her in a half nelson. When I finally figured out who the child's parent was, someone dozing a few rows of lounges back, she refused to do anything except say, "It's fine" over and over. If being smacked in the face by a stranger's wet nerf ball is normal, getting a slippery hug by a stranger's kid should be fine?
  3. I was hit by a family's baby. A large, seemed extended, family were playing in the pool and the adults were throwing the children up and letting them splash down. Good fun, they were keeping it within their group and I had absolutely no issue. Then what seemed like an older cousin or younger uncle got involved. This man looked like he wrestled moose for a living. After a couple of the kids got tossed, again mostly within their own little space, it was the toddler's turn; 18 months old tops, a baby. I was probably 15 feet or more away from them, I don't think I was ever even hit by their splashing. This guy lobbed the baby hard enough that it hit me in the back. I felt the face of another persons baby, smash into my back. the whole family found this hilarious and now I'm wondering if I really was a curmudgeon for getting staff to break this up.
  4. A grown man, whom I have never met, swam between my legs trying to get to a dive-and-retrieve toy. Now I have never told this story to anyone and get the response of, "Well people swimming right up against you is a totally normal pool occurrence." and yet getting beaned in the face by a toy is dismissed as just something you sign up for when you swim sometimes.
  5. A child was waving his towel around outside the pool. He held it at about the halfway part and he was ... I don't know, just waving it about. He didn't hit anyone and he seemed to be making a minor effort not to, but he came close a couple times as people milled past to get into and out of the pool. The LG immediately shut that down, located his mom, and gave the kid an "official" warning. So I'm thinking back on that now and if I had to choose between getting whapped in the face by a tea-towel sized section of dry pool towel or a wet sponge from 20 feet away, there would be no hesitation.

It's like most people are on board with the idea of keeping your hands to yourselves but put them in the pool and they're fine with throwing things.

Looks delicious!

I've never noted a special occasion or celebration on my reservation. I was in the Christmas store at MK once and staff had everyone in the store sing Happy Birthday to a button wearing guest. That's made me a bit anxious about calling attention to a birthday.😉
