Barbie movie 2023

This movie looks absolutely terrible 👎🏻👎🏻
Ryan Gosling as Ken - give me a break 🙄
He’s 42 years old - a little old to play Ken, and why would he want to?:confused3

This movie comes out 7/21/23 - you’re assignment Buzz is to go see this movie and let us know how it is.

I am fascinated by this movie. The trailer being a send up of 2001 a space odyssey is pretty great. I think the fact that Ken is 42 is part of it. I suspect it will be very tongue in cheek. The director is a pretty good one so I am very interested in how this will play out.

I'm interested, mostly because I have no idea what's going on. Won't see it in the theater, but I'm sure I'll see it eventually when it's streaming somewhere.

I suspect the same. Tongue-in-cheek humor but with heart, probably not unlike the Lego Movie. Greta Gerwig has a good track record, so who knows.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner, as there's already been some GI Joe movies. Granted those are based on the 80's series and not the original '60s doll.

I'm sure Mattel will market this as much as possible. I foresee a Margot Robbie as Barbie doll in stores.

And Buzz, should you be caught, the DIS will disavow any knowledge of your existence.

This post will explode in ten seconds.

When a live action Barbie movie was first announced, I thought it sounded really dumb. But after seeing the trailer, I'm very interested in seeing how this turns out. This doesn't look too bad. If reviews are positive, I'll go see it.

I am going to reserve judgement until it comes out. It has the potential to be really bad, or really good. Trailers can be misleading, making a bad movie appear better or a good movie seem worse than it is. I don’t know that it’s a movie I would see based on genre, but if it turns out to be a hit I could change my mind.

In regards to the age question, how old are Barbie and Ken supposed to be? When I was a child playing with Barbie, I always felt they were career people in their thirties, so an actor in their early forties who looks young is not a stretch for me. I suppose if someone else pictures them as teens or college age, then it could be more of an issue. However, think of movies like Grease, where actors in their thirties were playing high school students and no one blinked an eye. If it’s done right, the viewer forgets the age of the actor and simply accepts them as the character.

This might be a ridiculous question but could it be about Barbie and Ken’s kids?

When you look at the general picture movies based on toy lines have always been a huge hit since the 80's when every single 80's toyline such as GI Joe and My Little Pony became a hit a movie or cartoon would follow later on. With Barbie there was always movies and cartoons based on Barbie dolls such as Barbie And The Rockers and Barbie And The Sensations and ever since the release of the first direct to video movie on Barbie which was Barbie And The Nutcracker in 2001 it seems that every year an avalanche of Barbie movies gets released and this is a way for Mattel to sell Barbie dolls and toys. With the release of the live-action Barbie movie debuting in 2023 it seems that they are trying to attract a new generation of Barbie doll collectors and I grew up playing with Barbie when I was a little girl and I cannot believe how Barbie dolls has changed since I used to play with Barbie as a little girl because if you look at Barbie dolls today they focus on teaching girls about careers and having a positive image about themselves. And so I think Mattel will hit the jackpot with this Barbie movie and I can expect to see a whole line of toys and merchandise being released for this movie next year. Even though I am more interested in celebrity dolls than Barbie today I think this movie will show promise

The trailer looks like it's touching upon Barbie history (I can't believe I'm saying this). We see Barbie in the original swimsuit while little girls are smashing their baby dolls. Barbies came along as a replacement for baby dolls and paper dolls- actually the creator of Barbie noticed that her daughter, Barbara (whom I kid you not had a brother named Kenneth), preferred playing with paper dolls of adult women. The original Barbie is actually a retooled German "adult" toy (think Spencers), based on a risqué' comic strip. Barbie creator bought a few on a visit to Germany, and her husband, a Mattel executive, worked to get the rights.

So yes, that original Barbie sculpt? That was once a doll that men would give each other as a gag. Somehow they'd end up with their daughters, and would become popular before the name Barbie came to be.

Meanwhile GI Joe, originally inspired by those articulated wooden artist models, was meant to replace metal soldiers that boys played with. Hasbro would never admit it, but the marketing model for GI Joe resembles Barbie perfectly: one basic doll/figure inside a coffin box, extra accessories/outfits on cardboard wrapped in cellophane. When Joe was still in the design process, they used a Ken doll as a clothing model, with his features chiseled down to make him look more manly. This was before they finally created the body and hired an artist to sculpt a new head, of course.

That's probably more than you all needed to ever know about these things. I read a couple books on each, there's some interesting stories involved with the history of these toys.

Forget the Barbie movie I'm excited about the Super Mario Brothers movie coming out. I'll be seeing it with or without my kids.
