Anyone ever had a watermelon explode in your house?

I heard something dripping in my kitchen and when I went to find the source of the “leak”, it turned out to be a watermelon on our kitchen island, the juice was dripping all over the island and our floor. When DH cut it open in the sink, it made a fizzing sound like a pop can that’s been shaken and we stepped back as if we sensed it was going to explode (it didn’t after the pressure was released)

I’ve never had this happen in all the years (every year) I’ve bought watermelons, didn’t even know it was a “thing”, but when I looked it up I read that it can happen when the watermelon is rotten. I just bought it yesterday and it looked normal from the outside. I also found some articles about a possible chemical used in farming to accelerate growth? Anyone experience this?

Never heard of this... that rotten though, Eek! I’d ask for a new one at store I bought it at.
What a sticky sweet mess that would have been had it burst open..

Ok, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’d never heard of it! I think I will at least call the store and see if we can get a refund, I’d be curious if they had other people have it happen. And yes, I’m glad I heard the “leak” before I went to bed tonight, it looks like some people have had them explode all over their kitchens :/

Nope, the biggest random explosion I've had in the kitchen was a crockpot!

Add me to the ones who have never heard of that before, but yikes..what a mess an exploding watermelon would make!

Yep! On our island as well! What a mess! Sticky watermelon juice everywhere! Dripped down the cabinets into the drawers and cabinets. Ours happened overnight so my DH found it the next day. It was awful. We had one he got ready to cut and when he picked it up you could hear a sloshing noise. We handled that thing like a bomb! Couldn't get it out of the house fast enough!!

Dh has managed supermarkets for years and he has never mentioned that happening. When he gets home this afternoon I will ask him about it. Good luck cleaning up all that sticky mess, I don’t envy you!

That actually happened to me last year with a honey dew melon. I couldn’t figure out where this sticky syrup all over my counter was coming from. Then I realized it was the melon and kids decided to cut into it. It started hissing and fizzing and the rotten juice got everywhere. It literally smelled like rotten fish, it was so gross. I had to scrub and scrub to get the smelly sticky juice off of everything and it still smelled faintly of rotten fish for days afterwards, it was disgusting!

Yuck! DH did say it smelled awful when he cut into it. Right now it’s sitting in our sink waiting for me to figure out what to do with it lol. I kind of want to take it back to the grocery store just so they can dispose of it, I don’t want to throw away that huge thing in our trash can, stinking things up

Yes, please let me know what he says! Luckily it didn’t actually explode like some have, it just leaked all over (it’s all cleaned up after a quick mop and counter wiping). But if we hadn’t released the pressure in time, it probably would have been much worse!

Ugh, I am sorry. I’m so glad I stayed up late last night and heard the leaking before it had a chance to fully explode overnight

Oh no, how did that happen?! That sounds scary
I have no idea! It just suddenly shattered into sharp little pieces all over the place, nobody was near it or anything. I've been reluctant to use a crock pot when nobody's home ever since then!

WOW!
Now I am happy that I buy my melon already cut up (Only because I'm afraid to cut those big suckers).
