I came on here specifically looking for this question and discussion. I have a dear friend who has DVC and treats two of us to a trip when she's able. We've gone twice and have a third one scheduled for November. They're both American but feel as sick about the political climate and the treatment of Canada as I do. It's interesting to me to read that others have experienced Americans as being so oblivious to our feelings - my social media is full of Americans who support us and are horrified. Just the algorithm I guess.
I have loved our trips so much and to be honest, and no self-pity here I promise, for reasons currently beyond my control I don't have much fun in my life and not much to look forward to, so the Disney trips with these friends have been amazing. Disney is so unique, so special. Part of how I can afford a trip like this is our rooms are covered, so going somewhere else with them isn't likely. I've been thinking about different things. What if I flew out of Canada (I'm in a border city and usually fly from Detroit) using a Canadian airline (ugh, but you know). Disney doesn't support the values of the current US administration. I wouldn't be spending any money off of Disney property. And... I just don't think I can do it. I'd feel like I was betraying my country.
Another consideration - I had brunch with some friends over the weekend and one is married to a Canadian border guard. She said they have begun searching the vehicles of everyone who comes back from the US. They are absolutely entitled to do that, and before this random checks would happen occasionally, but to be honest I haven't been searched in years. They're also charging duty for every purchase. For those who don't know, legally you aren't entitled to bring back merchandise for free from the US unless you've been away for I think 48 hours, but in practice it's extremely common for them to allow you to bring back up to a couple hundred dollars' worth, or to not even ask except about alcohol and tobacco. So now I'm wondering about the border crossing experience in both directions.
So yeah. I think not. I'm heartbroken.
