The one that bugs me (currently) is if you go to an actual restaurant where you would leave a tip, they conveniently calculate the tip at the bottom of the receipt - but it's wrong. You tip on the subtotal, not the total including the taxes. I will actually leave less tip if I catch it. Watch out for the mandated tip (usually for large parties) above the total line too. In that case not only would you be tipping twice, but your handily calculated tip at the bottom of the receipt would be calculated after adding in the mandatory tip. Yeah, you'd be tipping on the tip. Now that's a tipping point if ever there was one.

I belong to a service group that meets for lunch and our Treasurer was always sending the check back and making them recalculate the automatic tip based on the actual tab before tax. When you are paying for 80-100 lunches, that mistake adds up. We meet at a different restaurant now, and they charge a flat per person change for lunch with the tip built in.

We are a family of 7 so I always look for the added tip, and I can’t understand why everyone is putting the tip on after taxes!

It can. IIRC Chili's for example their tablets on the table specifically mention the tip is calculate pre-tax. It's been a bit since I've been there but I know that was one place we went to that did it pre-tax. There are a few other places that do that as well but the bulk do it post-sales tax. Personally I just manually calculate it out, even if someone does it post-tax there are a few times where the suggested tip at the bottom of the receipt is calculated incorrectly like a software issue, I don't think often but it can happen.

I have yet to see one that adds tip before the tax. When we get charged mandatory tip on a regular check, they do tax first, then tip.
