Thought I would get the new destashing/decluttering thread started so people could start posting their goals or results as the 2025 year begins. Hopefullly, we can all be a resource or inspiration for one another! Good luck and remember anything that you are able to remove from your space is an improvement. Slow and steady wins the race.

Good luck and happy decluttering 2025!

I always enjoy your decluttering threads. I don't have an exact number of items to get rid of, but am always decluttering. My cousin and I always have a yard sale in the spring when her subdivision does one, so I will definitely have stuff to take to that.

After at least 7 years of not getting it out at Christmas, I have decided to sell my Christmas Village at this years yard sale. That will get at least 3 big totes out of the basement storage area.

I'm going to try and use Clutter Bug’s (Cas) 30 day declutter challenge to jumpstart January and see how it goes. If there are categories that don't work for me I'll just pick another area in the house that we need to work on. (i.e. we don't have kids, but can certainly get rid of stuff in the guest bedroom or purge pet stuff or whatever). I also feel like it gives me a good idea of zones we can keep hitting to get things better under control.

It's a place to start for me and DH seems to be on board. If we work in tandem that should help so I'm hoping this kickstarts a year of decluttering because we could sure use it.

My major hang-ups are:
-duplicates that are perfectly good so I don't want to get rid of because you may have to replace later (and my problem seems to be relatively inexpensive items).....maybe I'll limit myself to one plastic tote in the basement for items like that as a start
-saving stuff just in case it may come in handy (i.e. I don't nanny anymore and it is not likely I will in the future so do I really need kid's toys/supplies here?)
-deciding if it's worth trying to sell certain items (because we certainly could use the cash) or it's more important to just get the darn stuff out of the house

I'm in the same situation, where I'm not able to put mine up due to a cat who thinks he's Godzilla, but I'm just not ready to give it up yet...

major purge for the New Year.... my mother passed away in April at 90, she still lived in the home with me and had hoarder tendencies (depression baby and all that) so that meant saving all sorts of stuff that no longer was needed or useful. This Halloween and Christmas I purged decorations (no worries we still have PLENTY) just keeping the ones that we actually use ... also finally got underneath into the kitchen cabinets and cleared out all the scratched non stick cookware and pot lids... so many potless lids. Taking a carload of stuff to the Salvation army today... I miss my mother dearly, but I confess it feels so good to be able to get rid of stuff without a fight

We also dealt with a parent’s death, and subsequent surviving parent’s move. That declutterring involved 22 weekends…and numerous arguments with siblings…but to stay on topic….my husband and I have been in our house 9 years, and we will be methodically going through our house for getting rid of stuff. I never would want to put my daughter through what we went through getting my parent’s stuff sorted through.

Using the challenge, Day 1 started out with a bang. My husband is on board so we trashed old slippers, flip flops, 2 broken handsets, 2 broken headsets with accompanying cords (this is why I stay out of the gaming room but the clean out made him find some more things). I put 10 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of gloves, 4 winter hats, 2 head/ear wrap, a columbia coat, and a scarf in the donation bag!

I’ll follow along. I retired last year and have a goal of declutterring my house going room by room. I’ve done the easy ones so far but got derailed when I had to help with my mom (dementia at a point of needing to move to assisted living). Now I’ll focus on all the things in her house that need to either move with her (small number) or be tossed (large number) or sell (tiny number).

I am totally onboard for 2025. I started last year slowly and got a lot accomplished over the summer. Planned to finish strong but got totally derailed and only took baby steps. Husband is onboard and so is the rest of the family. My husband and I started in our bedroom today and we made a huge dent. Back at it tomorrow and the weekend before we return to work. Our goal is to declutter the whole house this year especially the basement which happens to be the catch all for everything. Don’t know what to do with something, put it in the basement. We might need it. Time to get rid of it!

Love snowy days! We all stayed home and was so productive. I worked in the master bedroom - DH said there was nothing to get rid of.....managed to find 22 items! 22/2025

We dropped off 3 giant trash bags full of clothes, shoes, and toys to Goodwill on the way home from work. One of those bags has been sitting around for months which is ridiculous (especially considering we pass by the Goodwill drop off every day on the way home from work). Intend to work on Day 2 of the challenge so clearing the kitchen counters/surfaces this afternoon. Day 3 is supposed to be clearing out/cleaning the fridge but I think we will do both today since the garbage gets picked up tomorrow.

ETA - We tackled the kitchen kind of all in one since we were rolling along and garbage pick up is tomorrow. Chucked a bunch of dribs and drabs of stuff that was sitting around in cabinets (looking at you multiple bags of chip crumbs).
Fridge is also cleaned out. Then we did a freezer inventory and reorganized that as well throwing out just a few UFOs (unidentifiable frozen objects) but honestly not too bad. Another bag of trash out and a couple of of kitchen things to give to a friend who can use them.

I started the week of Christmas because I was on PTO and just staying home. I got rid of 3 bags of clothing/shoes, and 3 boxes of books/DVDs/Random stuff. I still have a lot to go, but it was a big start!

We did go through my cleaning supplies per the challenge (since I'm a little ahead to account for staying at my parents a few days a week) and reorganized them to put some in more appropriate rooms, but really didn't have any to throw out. I use all of what I have so nothing that's garbage. I did note that I need more clorox wipes (opposite of the direction I'm trying to go LOL). But we did throw out an old pair of water shoes that don't fit and are not in a condition to donate, 4 rubber bracelets, 2 cat scratch pads, and a couple of trashed dish towels that don't need to be in the rotation. So not quite the target for today for but a win nonetheless as more out the door.

Got all the xmas decorations down put away and back in the shed! Back in the shed is huge as we usually have to wait until spring because of snow (well it was 45 degrees and no snow, so they all went back to their assigned place). The xmas gifts have been put away and all the shipping boxes from December have been recycled!! Nothing really to add to my decluttering number but more of just things going where they belong! Kind of nice having the living room back in order!

Thank you for this thread. Have lots of decluttering plans for this year.
Did get rid of 1 bag of Christmas ornaments in Dec, so that was good.
Goals:
Hall closet-at least 1 shelf. Includes towels/washcloths we never use, and possibly old sheets/blankets. We are all a 'that might come in handy one day' family, and we just have way too much for that stuff. Will donate or toss.
Bonus room art supplies: have 2 drawers full of crayons. Kids are grown, no need for all that, ditto stickers, etc.
Books: I love my books, but I have a stack of about 10, and hope to make it 20 or more to get rid of. I have a LOT of kids books in excellent condition, from fiction to non fiction/encyclopedia type picture books, but again, grown kids, so DH and I say stuff to justify keeping them, like 'maybe they'll be good for grandkids one day....' no! got to go
Clothes-always a work in progress. I have gone up a size, or two, so about 60% of my clothes don't fit....kinda in the mindset of should I keep them just in case, or keep a few things, etc. but I will dedicate myself to getting rid of things I never even liked when I wore that size. I don't have that many clothes or shoes anyway, and hate shopping for them, so don't want to stock up on a lot of a new size.
Glassware: here's the tough one....inherited a lot of nice dishes, and cookware, and glassware. None of it is worth much, but it's also not just cheap stuff......always presents me with the quandary of maybe I'll have a garage sale, make a few bucks, or sell online vs just donate. I'm about to the just donate mentality. I have 3 or 4 sets of Corelle casserole dishes, including that vintage cornflower, but nobody makes that many casseroles, even at a Southern Thanksgiving.
DH is also pressuring me to make an inventory of my collectibles/Star Wars stuff.....I have about 20 boxes of figures, in their boxes, plus what's on display, and have kinda lost track of what I have....
Anyway, I started a bag of donations, and will work on that this weekend.
Thank you again for this thread and motivation!

I need to hop on this train. My regular declutter tactic has been that every other month I order a big chewy order and I need to fill that box and it has to leave the house before the next order comes (really sturdy boxes!)

We started a large house remodel 2 weeks ago. We will be converting our garage and the small room next to into livable house space. We had just been using those area for storage so I got rid of a lot of stuff in those areas before the work started and once it’s done I will be reconfiguring a lot of other rooms.

Currently I have been donating/tossing/giving away what I have but we are going to have several large items (kitchen table and chairs, end tables, rocking chairs, other furniture, old decor, patio set, etc.) so we are going to have a tag sale whatever we don’t sell will be donated/trashed/give away.

I also hope to go through my basement once the remodel is done as I have been holding onto some things in hopes of using them post remodel. What we don’t use has to go!

I’m in a weird holding pattern now in that I don’t really have room to sort/store things as stuff is everywhere due to the remodel. I am itching to get started! Hopefully a few more weeks.

So far I have a gallon ziploc bag of costume jewelry to donate (my jewelry case is over the back of my closet door so part of the closet declutter. 2 bags posted for sale (Kate Spade wristlet never used and a small Dooney and Burke purse with tags still on). Not expecting much from those but a little bit of money would be nice. DH put several tshirts in the donation bag. One bagallini made it in there as well and a couple shirts. I'm still chugging along. Keeping up the momentum while it lasts. The upside of all this I find is that things I used to put off I deal with (junk mail, i'm looking at you) so they don't pile up. Things are definitely no where near where I want them to be but I can see progress which is motivating.
