Marathon Weekend 2024

We should have bib numbers when expo passes are released on the 30th. (That specific date was mentioned in an email...and we all know that not everyone gets all of the emails.)
Oh, I know. I just remember there was a race recently where we were able to find bib numbers through the tracking website before we got them through rundisney. I’m just impatient.
Epcot donuts (handed off by husbands) are the best donuts.

Speaking of the vendors (sort of, not really, but the shirts are in the same building.) Am I totally misremembering, or did we get all of our shirts with our race bibs in one swoop for Dopey last year? Because the map shows Dopey/Goofy/Marathon shirts being opposite of the 5/10/Half shirts. And shirt exchange is separate so......yeah.
I remember getting everything for dopey in one spot last year. I noticed it looks like they changed that, and we get our bib and shirts with everyone else.
I just hope all the dopey shirts still come together in a bag, and that we don’t need to get each race shirt individually

Well, crud: that road closures map seals the deal - Western Way will definitely be closed. Now to decide whether I want to deal with 429 + 192 or Palm Pkwy + Hotel Plaza Blv…

Is there a printable pdf event guide for race weekend? Maybe I’m old school but I want to be able to print it all from one location.

I still don't understand why the Expo is in 3 different buildings: 1 for the rD merch, 1 for bibs, and 1 for shirts / vendors. I wouldn't mind moving bibs and shirts to one building, but the vendors might get mad at that 😁

For those going to the Expo Wednesday, how long does it take to get our race stuff (running the Dopey)? What time is everyone heading to the Expo? and how long do you plan to be there?
Due to car trouble, for 2022 MW I arrived at the expo with less than 30 minutes to go on Wed evening. (It may have been more like 15 minutes. It was close). I sprinted from the parking lot to bib pickup. After running down to the nearly deserted floor, I was directed back upstairs to a short row of booths for the Dopey runners. IIRC, in that one spot I was able to get my 2 bibs and 6 shirts. (My Dopey Instant Shirt Collection). Yes, 2 bibs, one for the 5 and 10ks, one for the half and full. Turns out for good reason, that after two races the bibs have wilted and are rather worse for the wear.

By my recollection, I was in and out of there in 15 to 20 minutes. Even when I've showed up at more normal hours, I don't recall waiting too long.

For the merch section, what will take the longest is standing in any lines for photos with the giant distance numbers. For the Princess, I skipped the photos and was in and out in about 15 minutes, long enough to look at merch, buy a mug, and head out.

YMMV

I’ll normally save/screenshot any visual information and type out notes onto a Google doc sometimes I’ll ring it sometimes I’ll just pull info up

I’ve done races in all 3
Field house/athletic center (pre arena)

PSA the way things were set up for wine and dine was that you entered the arena were lead into the queue area to get onto the floor and if you wanted character/distance number photos you needed to either do that first before you shopped/checked out OR Re-loop through the queue room

Hi folks! I generally lurk here, but I need the collective wisdom! I've been kicking a decision down the road over and over again. Clearly no one else can decide for me, but I'm wondering if I missed anything.

Past race weekends, I've stayed onsite and relied on Disney transportation. Usually just a 2 or 3 night stay. Now I'm running Dopey for my first and surely only time plus two fun days after. So a much longer stay with my best friend. This time, I've booked two options and it's time to cancel one. We will have a rental car. Pricing is probably about the same.

Option 1: I booked the new Drury Inn in Disney Springs with a great deal almost a year ago. I have two rooms, a view of Epcot (firework view), a balcony, and in room minifridge and microwave. Seems so much easier for two adults who might need a little space when staying together for a whole week. The free breakfast and kickback are minor considerations. The access to Disney Spring is appealing because we don't plan to do park time Jan 3-6. We'll see a movie, take naps, and rest our legs. We will have to drive ourselves to the races. Now that the maps are out, I think that we're okay to do that?

Option 2: Port Orleans Riverside: Our old standby and favorite. Can drive, but don't have to. Can use our car to get offsite and still save a little $$ by hitting grocery stores, etc, but no in-room meal prep capability beyond storing yogurt in the fridge.

Option 3 (the complicated one) do a split stay and stay offsite when everything is really crowded and we're not doing parks anyway, then move to POR after the 10K. Never done a split stay, but it's not like that afternoon is super busy...

Anything I'm missing?
Grateful for insights!

I can offer some weirdly specific thoughts on this, because I am currently booked at and about to cancel a POR reservation, and Drury is one of the options I’m eyeing! I also stay offsite and drive to races very, very often.

My vote is stick with Drury. By all accounts, it’s a really nice resort - you’ll get way more for the money there than at POR. I stayed onsite for W&D and was really missing the ability to microwave even just a cup of coffee after a day, and was going offsite for food often. And with a car, you’re all set: driving to the races and to parks is quick and easy. Especially from Disney Springs area.

I personally am not a fan of split stays, especially with races involved: I like to settle in to a place for the duration and not have the hassle of re-packing and being “homeless” between resorts. YMMV of course, but tossing that in because you asked!

Thank you! You've found the driving pretty easy? How early do you arrive?? I could also do the split stay for just the post-race days for the post-run "play days"

As someone who has done a split stay for the last 2 race weekends, don't do it. It's annoying to have to pack everything up mid-trip, especially with all of the extra stuff that comes with doing a 4-race weekend. If I WERE to do a split stay, I would move on Monday (because you said park days *after* the races) so you could get access to the extra 30min at the parks, and you wouldn't have to pack up until you were completely done with the races.

One of the Port Orleans resorts is having it's pool refurbished starting that week, so if the pools were a consideration for you, be aware.

Driving to the races is super easy from that area (we have stayed at Saratoga and Old Key West) and we try to leave the resort no later than 3am. You can always wait in your car if it's cold, and I prefer to be early and wait than to be potentially late and stressing out. I also like to get into my corral early. YMMV based on your preferences.

I aim to leave my resort within 15-30 minutes of when resort race buses start - so if buses start at 3am, I’m trying to be out the door around 3:15-3:30am. From the Drury, it’ll be an easy drive down Hotel Plaza Blvd. to Buena Vista Drive, then just follow the signs to EPCOT, which will take you straight into the parking lot. SUPER easy! The later you leave, the more possibility of running into traffic, but I’ve never once in more than a decade been late for a race.

I often do split stays, love POR and never stay offsite but for what you’ve described I’d definitely keep the Drury reservation. It sounds like the space is better for you and your friend, the food situation also seems better for you over there. I’d avoid split stays over races weekends at all costs and driving to the races isn’t bad at all!

this is a great strategy! I'm adopting it right now, with a focus on the 15 minute one...I get anxious about being late and I like to be on the first bus....

Good advice and thanks for the reassurance about driving.

ohhh--if I tried your split strategy, then I could maybe do something swanky for the last two days....off to research...

I'll offer the opposing view here. 😀

The last thing I want to be doing at 3am the morning of a race is driving around an unfamiliar area, especially one with road closures complicating matters. I always choose Disney race transportation so I can step onto the bus and relax/micro-nap waiting for it to deliver me to where I need to go. In 9 race weekends, all doing multi-race challenges, I've had one bus mishap. I'll take those odds over the guaranteed stress of driving myself every morning.

I'd personally keep the resort reservation and let Disney do the driving!

Hi folks! I generally lurk here, but I need the collective wisdom! I've been kicking a decision down the road over and over again.

I find that for big events/longer trips, comfort (space) and convenience (kitchen) is key. So I would definitely stay at the Drury.

I did a split stay during one MW (like you are considering, transferring the day of the 10K) and it went okay, but it was hard to stay organized because I didn't want to completely unpack until we got to our "final destination." Would I do it again? Maybe. (I was staying at Universal and did a split stay to take advantage of the Express Pass for the first couple nights of our stay) But last year I stayed at one place the whole time and it was much less stressful.

I LOVE having a car for races. My formula for when to leave is to take the normal amount of time it would take to get to Epcot, double that and then pad it a little bit. Look in the race guide for when Disney wants you in the parking lots and do the math. The best part about the car is if you get there early (which you will), you can recline the seats and close your eyes for a little bit (just set a couple of alarms on your phone just in case).
